Hey guys.. So im looking at trading my blazer in for a truck this coming summer.. Im lookin at a Silverado 2500 HD...but i cant decide if it would be better to get gas or diesel.. my dad has been a truck driver for 30 years and has put over 1 million miles on his trucks, so i kno that diesel engines are more realiable than gas engines. Dont really have any heavy towing to do, but it would be nice to get a programmer and take it to the track and drag it for laughs...what do you guys think?

its all gonne be your pref. You have a few options... Diesel is going to give you better gas mileage and alot more towing power..But gas can have its advantages when it comes to power in the 2500 models.. You could get the big 8.1L and build that up for some serious power..but you might as well poor a can of gas out your window as you drive down the road..

If I would of had enough money I would have gone with the diesel! Lots of accessories for the deisel and easy bolt on power!

I would go with deisel. If I had money to pay for deisel fuel, i would've gone deisel. That and you'll be driving it till you die.

I love my 2500HD w/Duramax. It has so much power and even lifted and running 35's I still get 17+ MPG. Stock I would be getting low 20's for mileage. Endless possibilities as far as performance upgrades and the ability to have a daily driver, and drag truck in one.

I had a 1 ton diesel for years. The mpg was great but the higher cost of diesel outweighed the advantage of getting better mpg over gas (does that make any sense?). But, I really, really miss that towing power. I'm going back to diesel when my wife lets me buy my next truck.

well i would probably look for a stock one or with minor modifications. (exhaust, programmer etc) You don't want one that has been beat on or highly modified.

Yes, you need to look for a 2500HD, or a 3500HD and those will be either gas or diesel. The Silverados that have them are from the years 2001-present

Between gas and diesel for me the choice would depend on the towing requirements. Diesel if you need to tow something heavier or gas if you don't. I am really thinking about propane to propel my next truck. I want a 3/4 or 1 ton crew cab with a big block and automatic. A pre TBI model that I can easily convert to run on propane. I'm not into the new trucks, and am done forking over $25,000+ for something I'm going to drive the wheels off of.

For personal use I don't need a truck that often except for the trips to the river towing pwc's, and boats. Years ago I did a couple of propane conversions and these days I'm just tired of sending petrodollars to countries whose people want to kill me.

I figure I can get a nice truck and the conversion for around $8-10K.

The payback for the cost of the diesel/HD truck will be a long time coming, UNLESS you do the kind of heavy duty work that that combination does best. Gas does fine for occasional towing, and hauling. Diesel comes from the same crude as gas, so petro politics shouldn't enter into it.
