View Full Version : '04 Silverado "Clunk"

I notice in my '04 Silverado that when I take off from a Stop light, Stop sign.... or just a stop, that there is usually a suttle "clunk" when it starts moving.

I've heard that this is a common problem, and usually expensive to fix. Is this true?

I'm not sure what it is, but what i've come up with is it's the joint that holds the transfercase to the drive shaft. There's a small gap, so the transfercase joint moves and it closes up the tiny gap with the drive shaft and makes a clink. Thats what i've come up with, cause it does that for me too.

Did you ever bother getting it fixed?

Or is it something you just gotta live with? I really don't mind too much, I just want to know that there's no damage being done or if it's something I should get fixed before anything does get damaged, that's my concern.

I don't mind it, infact i think i like it. I've never had a rear wheel drive vehicle (cause it's my first vehicle) so it reminds me i'm driving a beast, incase i forget for some reason.

I doubt there's any damage being done. If you don't like the sound, i'm sure someone makes a tight fit joint out there, just like they make those heavy duty steering shafts that eleminate the steering wobble.

Checked them out and oiled them. Rear ones are a little rusty as was expected, front ones look pretty good.

Oiling/lubricating them really didn't seem to make the problem go away. It went away a little bit but it's still there.

I also hear the clunk when it shifts into first, but this is only sometimes, not always.

A friend of mine had a GM factory rep. come down and check out the " clunk " in his '95 Chevy and he was told it was "normal". It seems there is a little "slack" in the splines on the shaft going into the back of the transmission and when you first take off the "clunk" is taking up that slack. They packed the splines with grease and put it back together and it fixed it. After a while of driving ( a few months ) the grease goes away and the clunk comes back. I have the same in my '04, not bad, and have learned to ignore it. Good luck!
