View Full Version : Oil Meter on dash??
The oil meter on my 2004 Chevy Silverado (the one small one on the dash in the cluster of the other 4 right of the speedometer) looks like it is "stuck". The meter ends at the reading of "80" - and this is where the needle is even when the truck is off. When I turn the truck on the needle moves to about the 3'o clock position (obviously way off the scale) Now, my oil was just done and the computer says I have 95% oil life left... if this means anything. Is this broke? And if so, how can I fix it?
My bad, I guess this is the "oil pressure meter".... anyways it's reading waaaay off the scale. I think it's just stuck or something, I don't know. It looks like it got re-centered at 80 instead of 40 or something....

have the gauges been tamperd with or aftermarket gauges instaled
and the oil life monitor is not worth a darn.. you can simply reset it and it will return to 100 and then start the "countdown" again
Nope, nothing aftermarket added or messed with near the gauges....
OK, here is a picture I took... obviously the oil pressure isn't this high, so something is f'd up....

It was fine yesterday, just did this today when I started the truck up to go to work in the morning....
:grrrrrr:
Fake Edit:
When the truck is off, the needle stays at the 80 mark....

the oil pressure sensors that gm were using are junk. my guess would be that when yours went, it burried the guage and broke it. i would suspect that even with a bad sensor, the guage should still go to 0 with the truck turned off. i'de start with replacing the oil pressure sending unit which isn't that expensive. then if the guage is still burried i'de replace the guage. you should be able to find one in a junkyard. gm has been using those same guages for a long time.
I got a little fed up and eventually just just removed the fuse for the instrument/digital trip meter cluster and then put it back in - Problem Solved!!
Not sure what caused that to happen in the first place....

Wow, that is strange that that is all it took was pulling the fuse. I guess you know it was the guage then. It makes a good point to check that out for future members with the same prob.

And certainly let us know if the problem comes back!
Yeah it's starting to do it again.
Turns out GM has an (internal) service bulletin out where if a customer comes in and complains about anything on the cluster, they get a new one (free).
I'm taking advantage of that later this week....,

Where is the sending unit located, down by the oil filter mount? Does it just thread in like inthe old days?

good deal. I would just go in and get a new one and not mess with it. do you know if your truck has to be underwarranty for them to change it?

Yes they have a recall and class action suit on this, your year and model is included but hate to bring bad news the limits are 7 yrs/70k miles which ever comes first. But, some dealers have been gracious
and repaired/replace them anyways, but not all. It was a know failure from the vendor who did the clusters for them. It actually started in 2002 and ended 2005, but the numbers for complaints was the biggest in 2003-2004, so thats where the recall exists.
So, in closing I do hope they cover the problem with yours, because the cost can range from 355.00 to 550.00 and depends if they can get or have the cluster....... So you may have to wait until part arrives.

I've got a 2000 Silverado LS with the same problem. My oil pressure needle remains pegged even with the ignition turned off. Only time it drops, and only to about 2:00 is when the brake lights are activated. I figure its the gauge :( but will try R&R-ing the fuse. I'm especially bummed that the recall deal doesn't cover mine. I only have 50k on the truck. What lousy luck!

PLEASE tell me what fuse you pulled and if the engine was running when you pulled it. I looked at my fuse panel today hoping that I could reset my oil pressure gauge but didn't see anything labeled instrument panel. :(

The interior fuse/relay panel is at the end of the dash, drivers side. Should be in there. The main fuse/replay panel is in the engine compartment. Cover should be stamped IGN 1, this should turn off the cluster function and the key, this will reset cluster, but you may still ahve the problem.
