I bought a 92 K1500 with a 4speed auto about a month ago. The other day it started shifting funky. We took it to a local shop and they said it needs a new transmission. However, after shopping I don't know which on I have. Is it a 4L60 or a 4L80? They said it is electronically controlled. Is there a number stamped somwhere that I should look for? Also, If anyone is selling a transmission for this truck I might be interested.

You probably have a 4L60E if it's a 1500. What is your transmission doing wrong. Are you sure it needs a rebuild?

I took it to a local shop and they said that it probably needs a transmission. However, they tried a flush and it is shifting fine now. Does anyone think that If I added a transmission oil cooler it might extend the life of my old transmission?

I thinks some early 90s 1500 had 700r4. As far as tranny cooler, get the biggest tranny cooler you can fit onto truck. Trannys can never be to cool. Also try a larger aluminum trans pan as they als help cool the fluid.

Agreed, a transmission cooler will prolong the life especially if you tow or haul heavy loads. The Borg /True Cool style cooler is the best type IMO.

92 Chevy 1500 should have the 4L60. The 4L60E will have an electrical connector on the back passenger side above the pan. Tranny cooler a definite +.
