I'm planning to buy a 99 Silverado 4wd 5.3 extended cab next week from a local guy. It is in great condition, the only worrisome thing is that it has 210,000 miles on it. It apparently has 157,000 miles on the motor due to a recall done by GM. How many miles can I expect out of such a truck, assuming good maintanence? I had a mechanic check things out, and he gave it the thumbs up. I'm willing to do almost all the work on this thing myself.
We agreed on $4500 by the way.
Edit: Sorry guys it is 210,000 miles, not km

I have a 2002 Silverado with 185,000 km, and it's still roaring, just keep up the oil changes and maintenance, and i would expect 300,000km! All around a good truck, i highly recommend it!

I am no expert but that seems like a good price for that year besides the mileage. Also your mechanic is going to give better advice because he can actually look over the truck for you where we on this forum can only go by what you have told us. Good luck with your future purchase

I checked blue book and assuming its in exellent shape and it has no extras its valued from from $5,300 to $6,400 and thats putting it has 210k in miles!! So it sounds like a very good deal to me.

don't. just don't.
it does not matter what i said, as you are "already buying it" anyway. but you feel uneasy about it, so you want others to make you feel better.
you know what i have learned? if i feel uneasy about something - i just don't do it.
also, next time, make sure you post mileage in miles or kilometers. there's big difference between 210K miles and 180K kilometers.

I have a 1997 K1500 Extended Cab 185k, Heavy duty 4 speed auto, 5.7L, HD Chassis, 10 Ply Tires, Tow package, 4X4, 14 bolt rear end, 9.5" ring gear, 3.43 gear, Timbren Springs, and I would put this truck up against almost anything out there. If you take care of it it will take care of you. You might have to spend a little money on maintenance but look hoiw much a new one costs.

Hate to be the devils advocate here but, I would be a little weary about a 4x4 truck with that many miles on it. The guy that owns it, is he the original owner? That would be my main question. If he isnt the original owner who knows what that truck has been through. Usually if the market price on a used vehicle is $5500 and someone is only asking $4500, he is trying to get rid of it for a reason. Unfortunately having a mechanic doesnt really tell you that much about how the internals of the engine are holding up, or if it has been ragged out.
Be careful because it could be a $4500+ mistake.

Well, I did indeed buy this truck last April. It now has 220,000 miles, and it runs like a top. The paint and interior are in excellent shape.
List of things I did on the truck:
Spray in Bedliner
Belts and all hoses
Fuel pressure regulator
All differential/transfer case fluids
Driver's side Window Regulator
4wd selector switch
^All done by me.
Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter
Knock Sensors
Intake Manifold Gaskets
^ All done by my GMC tech buddy in a total of 3 hours! Dropping the gas tank, and pulling the intake manifold off would have taken me an entire weekend most likely.
The guy probably sold the truck so cheap because it was cutting out at full throttle. Having a GM tech as a friend helped a lot to solve the problem. A shop would have charged an arm and a leg for the diagnosis and repair.
It's been a great truck, and I have no regrets about buying it!

You'll be happy. I have a 99 with 354,000 miles. It starts up first try every time as soon as I turn the key. I only replaced the water pump and rear drive shaft. The 4x4 works great but I need front drive shaft u-joints.

Holy Crap, 354,000 miles! That is very encouraging! How many miles have you put on it yourself?

I've had it for about 8000 miles. I've owned it for over a year. I use my work truck 90% of the time. I got it from my Uncle for free because when my dad drove it for work (my Uncle owns the company) he thought the transmission was shot. I looked at it and noticed the u-joint in the rear driveshaft u-joint broke and craked the slip yoke. I replaced that and it been great. The front drive shaft has a kinking sound to it so I'm replacing those u-joints in the next few weeks and it will drive like a dream. The water pump went 3 months ago and that was replaced. Other than a lot of scratches a little rust in the body its been a great truck. I'm going to fix the rust hole this Spring and probably do the roll on bed liner on the whole body.
Sorry for the typos, I'm not really retarded but I can only see so much typing this on my blackberry.
