Just curious what type of diversity we have in this group?

What are your passions/hobbies other than the suburbon?

I am a terminal fisherman and am working on a street rod, 1946 Chevy pickup. (4 door crew cab version ;-))

I also have a 1927 Studebaker Dictator, all original.

Maybe that has something to do with why I keep "upgrading the burbon"....

I work for a software company doing marketing and web development.

I haven't had any auto projects for a while (since I got married and have a little one at home). Looking for a house that will afford me to build a workshop in the back. Then I'll look for a project.

Unfortunatly due to various injuries over time I had to retire early from working as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic(I am now a human Barometer). My wife and I decided to open a pawnshop that we've been operating now for just over 5yrs.
So as a hobby I am able to still play with my trucks(my other one is a 1976 C20 long bed 400HP SBC Th350 3.73 14 bolt FF rear with 1ton suspension) and build the occasional engine. When my daughter gets a little more older(she's 17months right now) I plan to lift it, put a Dana60 up front and a Dana70 in the rear, and then transplant a CAT 3126 into it(it will fit with some mods). I am working on gathering the parts for now, it will hell of a ride when it's done. :P

nice. Would love to see some pictures of that project. I keep threatening to put a member's photo gallery on here for people to upload to, but I just can't find the time. Besides working 50+ hours per week at my full time job and running this site... I've got an 8 month old boy at home that's been occupying my time as well.

kids tend to take some time, I have three girls 10,7 & 4 months. So I know the drill. Steve if I can help at all with that photo gallery let me know, I have some experience with older versions of PHPNuke. (I work at a software Co during the day also)

A photo gallery would be awsome, this way we can oggle the various Suburbans out there as well as any project documenting.
Kids are a blast, I can't wait to teach my daughter how to build an engine( she already has her first tool set), She's possessed with the Suburban and other Diesel powered vehicles. Sure puts a smile on my face. :D

Well, I am not happy at all with the gallery. That doesn't give the right permissions at all! I am going to play around with some of the other ones this morning and maybe we'll have a winner before lunch today. This site is built off of an outshoot from PHPNuke, it's postnuke, but they're designed in a similar way.

My paying job is working at a bank as a supervisor. My non-lucrative, but entirely much more rewarding job is raising my 13 yr old daughter, and staying up late nights with my 3 week old son. My suburban was given to me by my father, and I intend to make it my ongoing project.

I don´t drive a Suburban yet, but I´m thinking of buying one. I think joining this club could give me some hints about models, differences between manufacturing years etc. I´m 39 years old and live in Sweden. I´m managing a small ( 25 employees) business unit in the electrical installation branch. This BU is one of about 20 in Vinci Energies Sweden. I have a wife and four children 7m, 4y, 12y and 17y. The youngest three are girls. The 12 year old girl wants me to build a 1/2 scale copy of a Willys Jeep CJ2 for here.... no problem with a common interest there, it´s more a problem with lack of time. The boy wants me to buy and restore an El Camino for him. As i work quite long days i don´t have the time for it right now. Me myself have always, as long as i remember, been interested in cars, trucks, tractors and so on. I started to restore my first car at 17, it´s an Volvo P-1800 which i still own. The work with the Volvo was really a challenge due to it´s bad condition, but i think the result was great. In my youth me and friends were cruising around in american cars from the 50´s and 60´s, listening to real rock´n roll such as Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent and so on. We had Brylcreeme (pomada) in the hair, and pointed toe shoes, the common outfit for a swedish "greaser". Example of cars we were cruising in was Pontiac Star Chief -57, Oldsmobile NinetyEight -59, Chevrolet Impala -63, Buick -55 Convertible, Cadillac -58 convertible. I realy enjoyed those days, we had a' lot of fun. Then the children started to arrive and my life was changing direction. This was even more fun but in another way. Life goes on you know. I still dream about a Cadillac Eldorado -53 convertible in mint condition and hope that i some day can afford to buy one. I´m now trying to combinate my interest for big cars with V8´s with family response and comfort. I think buying a Suburban is the way to do it. I would love to cruise in it whith my family, listening to wife´s idol Bruce Springsteen ( to get here in a good mood)

Looks like I'm the odd man (woman) out. I'm 27 year old stay at home mom. My daughter just turned 1 and I was driving a toyota matrix. I told my husband when I got back from Costco that I need more room. The next week we brought home the big green monster. I love it. I joined the forum so I can see what exciting things are possible. My husband, Vee (ellis) joined in too. We love to change things up and make the most out of our vehicles. I can't wait to see what you guys have done...

well i guess i get the old man badge, 50 last march, recovering from stroke in dec. last year thats why i'm here a lot. but still love our burbs 86 and a 94. just cant get used to the idea that they have gone from good old work trucks to yuppy mobiles.
i worked for GM at the framingham assembly plant for 15 years went to saturn for a while and now work construction, oops now sit at home on the farm since stroke. but triing to get back into the swing.
right now triing to replace a floor in our stock trailer, takeing a lot longer than it should. only able to work an hour or two a day, but getting better. have floor out and scraping rust off frame work, getting ready to run wires today, that and stretching some fencing in one off the feilds.
never enuf time for all the things i have to do and now never enuf energy. getting better tho.
spend more time on idiotnet than i would like, rather be working on trucks.

wife says if you have a burb and need to use the roof rack you need help, profetional help.

07-24-2005, 10:17 PM
I had to use them once to bring home a couch. Only reason was because at the time of picking it up, the 'burban was loaded with wife, daughter, and dogs. I gotta say I was really impressed with the weight limits of the roof.

I parked the suburban in front of our house, and climbed on top with the couch, and hoisted it up onto the second floor porch. Not even a buckle in the roof, while I stood with the couch's full weight on my shoulders. I weigh close to 250lbs.

Very impressed!

had to watch the low bridges.

on a lighter note, the wife just reminded me of my farming expertece.
we bought our first farm down in tenn. in 1990, i am the first to admit i am not a farmer. she the one with the dream of owning a farm. about 92 or 93 we bought our first hay rolls, for those of you not familliar they are those big 6 or 7 ft tall rolls of hay you see in the feilds. in the winter we had no place under cover to store them so we just put a tarp over them and rolled them agains a fence line about 100 ft from the barn.
well this was an extremly cold winter for tenn. everything froze including the hay rolls to the ground. we did not have a tractor so we were just rolling these things around by hand, not a big deal until one day in january when we tried to move them and they were frozen to the ground.
i in my infinate wisdom sad why dont i hit it with the ford pick up, and old courier. so i did, i hit it and broke it loose and we rolled it over until it hit the flat spot, so i took the truck and backed up a couple of feet and tap the roll with the truck again. it didnt budge so i backed up a little further and hit it again, and it roll over to the flat spot again, gaining all of ten feet. so i hit it again with the truck and gained anouther ten ft, and then again anouther ten ft. getting tired of the prosses i figured if i hit it harder it might roll twice or more, so i backed up, shifted to 1st gear and nailed it doing about 20 mph. well it moved alright but so did the courier. the truck rolled right up onto the hay roll one wheel on one side and the other on the other all the way up the roll until the wheels were stradiling the roll and the rear bumper was dug into the ground, all i could see was blue sky, all four wheels off the ground and the rear bumper stuck in the ground. i had to go get the burb and because it was not four wheel drive attach a cumalog to bumper hitch of both trucks to winch the courier down off the hay bail.
hence the reason wel dont let steve do any farming

Steve

My name is Roy Parker and I live near Greenville, SC. I own a 1993 Suburban (work truck) and a 2003 Suburban (trip truck). I traded a 2002 GMC crew cab for the 2003. Have been impressed with the 2003 (5.3 with 3.73 rear). Over past two months, have run over 1,500 miles in and out of SC/NC mountains and am still averaging 18.1 mpg. Have seen 19.5 mpg.

I am retired Air Force and have worked past 15 years as an industrial operations and maintenance technical writer and trainer. Have spent the past 12 years playing with antique stockcars and helping manage the National Vintage Racing Association (NVRA). I restored a 1940 Ford in 1995 and ran it until the end of the 2002 season. You can see it on our club's web site at: www:nvraracing.net. My car is the rusty one shown first in the photo gallery. Its original number was 82.

01-18-2006, 12:00 AM
Good evening Steve.

Sorry about that NVRA address. Try: www.nvraracing.org It was late when I wrote the last email.

Professionally speaking, I have written training materials and procedures on all types of industrial equipment. My speciality was new machine, line, or plant startups, but have given up the travel. Did ops procedures for processing line last year while still working at Greenville Technical College as a industrial lab manager and evaluator. Work as a "consultant" because nobody wants to hire the old guys anymore, even though the procedures I create must be good enough for operators or maintenance folks to use so that they do not cost the company thousands of dollars in bad product or damaged machinery! Amazing isn't it.

As for the NVRA, I was the club president from March 1996 thru 1999, and have been a club officer since. I place almost all the pictures on the club's web site gallery, along with commentary. I know the history of most "vintage" cars racing in the Southeast and a few in other parts of the country. It is a hobby that I enjoy. We just started the web site in April of 2005, but it averaged over 2,200 visits and almost 70,000 hits per month from October thru December 2005. From what I am told, those are some pretty good numbers.

Gotta run,
Roy

Steve
01-18-2006, 10:31 AM

To pay the bills, I am a Naval Architect for Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. I work in the R&D organization, developing new structural technologies and designs for the future Navy and Coast Guard fleets. It can be pretty interesting stuff. The great thing is it provides me major exposure to top level management at a young age; I'm 26 and on a first-name basis with several VPs, which is rare for a 12,000-employee organization.

Outside of work, my main focus right now is fixing my Katrina-flooded house, which is slowly coming along. My lovely girlfriend takes up most of my time too, I hate it. When I find the time, I also have a Ford ZX2 S/R that I like to tinker with and drag race, and I also have a 1991 Cobalt 223. Oh yeah, and I am also an aspiring home brewer. 8)

very nice, I hope to get back up to that part of the world again sometime soon.

My wife (from east texas) went to Vancouver and to Victoria for the first time and she made the faux paus of telling the money taker getting onto the ferry that Canadian money looks like Monopoly money.

She smiles and said, "no, yours does..." and was very nice. I told her after the fact that it's not a good idea to win people over by telling them that their currency looks like play money. :-)

I went bowling one time in Alberta. The game there is, "five-pin." A local man was giving us tips and instruction on how to play it well. He (and I) referred to the game that's common to America as, "ten-pin." My companion, unintentionally rude, kept referring to the American game as, "regular bowling." Our new Canadian friend, however, accepted it very graciously.

I'm 40, been married almost 22 years and have 4 kids and 1 granddaughter. I manage a medium-sized independent grocery store and cut meat part-time. I enjoy hunting and camping. My 15 year-old son races motocross so that keeps our family busy on weekends through the spring, summer, and fall. My only project vehicle is my 1987 Chevy K5 Blazer w/Silverado package. It has a 4 inch suspension lift and 35" BFG Mud Terrains. I put a brand new GM crate motor 350 in it a few years ago and it still only has less than 5000 miles on it. The 700R4 tranny needs to be rebuilt, as well as front and rear differentials, and worn front suspension componants replaced. It has TBI so the only mods I have done are a throttle-body spacer and a Hyperchip. I want to put posi in the rear and change the gearing for the bigger tires. It runs great and still drives and the body and interior are in good shape so I'm half way there. She will be my hunting and play vehicle.

Hi everyone.

Did you know that when the imigrants from Europe and Asia sailed to America in the 17:th, 18:th and 19:th centuries, the trips were so hard that only the toughest, strongest and most determined people survived. In fact, only the most daring had the guts to decide to go in the first place. So according to Darwin and the natural selection (the survival of the fittest) the base for todays Americans is a select few of survivers and determined people which make up the fundament of the greatest nation on earth today - US of A. (And it's got nothing to do with race since these people came from all over the world).

After this short intro, I'm Peter from Sweden. I'm an aeronautical engineer working at Saab Aerospace, Swedens famous aircraft manufacturer. Our main product today is the Gripen Fighter

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l117/ajaxajax2000/Flyg/20040909_Gripen.jpg

I'm not really working with the Gripen, but rather our next generation FCAS (Future Combat Air System). No pic!!!

I'm the father of three lovely kids, married for the second time and living in Uppsala just north of Stockholm in Sweden. My wife - since 4 years - is the woman I've been looking for my whole life and I spend a LOT of time on her. And she on me.

This summer we bought a new house with a marvellous double garage and we also got a very promising German Shepheard puppie who is now 8 month:

We do a lot of sailing in our yacht - a Swedish 36 ft Najad which has given us some lovely moments both at sea and in harbour:

I love cars and the reason I'm here in the first place is that I'm about to buy a '03 Suburban replacing my present '98 Grand Cherokee. I'm gonna miss that car, but the sub seems like a nice alternative and we really need the space. (The wheels are being changed for something better!)

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l117/ajaxajax2000/Tahoe/XCT893-1001.jpg

I also love motorcycles and been taking up biking again after a 10 year rest. My bikes now include my favorite track bike, a '01 Ducati 996R which is a dream to ride and very hard to keep the front wheel down when accelerating:

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l117/ajaxajax2000/Ducati/DSC00165.jpg

My other bike is a mile eater. The mighty Kawasaki ZZR 1400:

I also just parted from my fantastic '92 Corvette ZR-1, due to lack of time:

That's pretty much me in a nutshell. Hope to get my Suburban this monday, wherafter I'll be back with all the questions to you guys and gals.

That is quite the collection of toys! With all those things to play with, how do you ever get any work done.

As an AE for Saab, what do you think of the "born from Jets" ads that GM is running for the cars??

Yeah, time is always short, isn't it?

As for the GM ad, I think it's rather clever. Touches a lot of feelings in many men, I guess. Don't know how accurate it is though. And it sure hasn't turned Saab Automobile into a profitable company. The Saab car division was sold to GM years ago.

I took over completely after restarting it in 2006 and it is now the largest, most organized and established club in North Alabama and will soon be expanding chapters to the entire state of Alabama and eventually the South East.

This is my wife's car. We have had 4 Gen 2 SHOs and she loves them. This one only has 83K miles. It has stage I cams, ported intake, chip, borla exhaust, adj. coilover shocks, subframe connectors, alum. bushings, larger front and rear swaybars PLUS it's a 5sp. I hope to put some big brakes on it this summer.

Hi Gang
My name is Larry, and I'm a recovering....whoops, wrong meeting
I'm a 50'ish year old semi retired race car driver, still workin on them though. My wife is just as big a "car guy/gal" as me. Shes a Nurse by day. Everything from local street stocks to WoO Sprints & LM, IRL to Cup series cars. My current "bill payer" is working for the promoters of the "Daytona Turkey Run" and "Spring Show" car shows that take place at the Daytona Intl Speedway. I also do race car fabrication and chassis building. My Hobbies are;

HO Scale Slot cars. I have almost 5000 of them, yea Five THOUSAND of them and 2 huge multi lane layouts. I have ben racing/collecting these cars since I was a kid in the early '60s. One is a 4X18 ft 6 lane 58 ft.per lap track and the other is a 4X16 4 Lane 76 ft per lap track. Both layouts are completely landscaped. I also cast resin bodies for these fun little cars.

Photography. I occasionally shoot Sprints, Dirt Late Models and Midgets at Dirt tracks. (Knoxville, Eldora, Williams Grove, Manzinita)

Our Station Wagons. My wife and I have a "fleet" of 91-93 "B" body wagons. Her daily driver is a 91 Buick Roadmaster "GS" wagon. My "cruise in/show car" started life as a 91,000 mile Caprice wagon that has "evolved" into a "Yenko Impala SS" wagon, thanks to a few "friends" (using THAT term rather loosely) one of which has/had a TV show called "Overhaulin". It has a 410 CI Vortec engine, 4 wheel Disc brakes, custom interior and tons of mods. My wife just got for Xmas a 92 Buick Roady Wagon (that happens to be the same color as the "Yenko") that were gonna "evolve" into a "GSX" wagon so she can have her own "cruise in/show car", so we can do the "his & hers" thing at shows. Thanks again, Chip.:great: Our friends here have named our place "the Daytona Office of the 91-96 B Body Wagon Rescue & Rehab" due to many of them finding their way here, then being "adopted out" to new homes. My latest "rehab was a 91 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon that we "evolved" into a "Hurst/Olds" wagon. Hated to let go of that one, but it got a great home.

Our 2 Basset Hounds. We have 2 basset Hounds. Gracie is the oldest at 7, and Magoo is 5. They are so much fun, WHEN they move.

My Dream Job. There are 2. First is a "sleep tester" for the Sealy mattress company. Second is a Bikini Installer. Neither will probably happen, but hey, cant a guy have a goal?

Maybe the club here could have a "get together" at our "Spring Show" at Daytona March 28, 29 & 30 2008.

Heres wishing everyone here a Safe and Happy Holiday Season and a Safe and Prosperous 2008 from Daytona Beach.

Larry

Hi, I am Jon. I work making chemicals for Kodak. I've been doing that for 20 years now. In my free time...well, ok in the time that I make happen.... I play with cars, engines, drums, and the occasional motorcycle. I have built several small block Chevys and have had my hand in sveral classic car/street rod builds. My personal ride right now is a 1922 Ford "T" bucket, with a 283 SBC and an Offy 3X2 intake. I'll post picts of it as soon as I can figure it out. I built a killer 1941 Ford that I stuffed a 355 SBC into and man did that thing screw. That was my personal ride until the divorce several years back...oh well. My whole family has been in this...my old man has built several cars , a 1927 Chevy 2door sedan high boy(cool looking car) 1971 Chevy truck, and he currently building a 1940 Chevy convertible. My Brother had a 1964 Impala SS and just finished his 1966 Chevelle SS(clone). My uncle had a 1936 Chevy truck that was wrecked by some idiot that puller out in front of him and the idiot had no insurance and was under age!!! OUCH!!! He also is currently working on a 1968 Dodge truck. It's SO UGLY it's cool looking. Anyways....

30, about to be 31. Airline Pilot. Newly married, 4 month old lil girl, new to Houston as well. Before the lil lady came along I had a house close to downtown Denver which was my ongoing remodeling project. I had a YZ450F and rode alot of Motocross with my brother and all my friends, who I left in Denver to change jobs and move to Houston. (I think I need my fcuking head checked). Now I'm in Houston, in an apartment, and sold all my toys to supplement my new piss-poor income (don't believe the hype, pilots get paid nothing now.) All I have left is my rig, and I'm holding on to her for dear life. Been in Houston for 6 months and the wife and I are absolutely miserable here. Already making plans to get out, back to Northeast Ohio where I'm originally from, and where there are far less people and traffic. Also looking forward to all the camping and wheeling that goes on in Ohio, PA, and the Virginias. Other than all that,,, everything is just jim dandy.
