Yeah, I've heard about this. I know I wouldn't get rid of my truck! I don't think the Prius comes with a tow package

I read about this too, and I think they only give you like a $4,500 tax credit! The thing that makes me mad is when you buy a so called "gas guzzler" you have t pay the gas guzzler tax when you buy the vehicle new, and then they are going to pull this type of crap. My parents always buy the tiny little cars, like the Geo Metro's or cavaliers or my mom's Aveo she has now. I just hate little cars period, I bought my truck because of it's custom potential not it's mileage.

The US is sitting on the largest oil deposit in the world and if they would just tap into it slightly then the "gas Guzzling" problem they are so worried about would vanish. There is enough oil under the center of the US to supply us for the next 400 years. the funny part is they have know about it since Taft was president.

IMO...trucks are made to be work horses...towing, pulling, hauling, etc etc, not for looks or to be street queens. You buy a truck for it's purpose not for the mpg or any of that other crap. :great:

If this bill passes like it's supposed to do it will really hurt the economy. Many automotive repair shops will suffer if this happens. It will also force people to drive economy cars that they cannot afford the payments on.

I saw a dealer advertising on tv today pitching it. This program is absolutly ignorant, stupid, typical liberal politician crap. You know what they say about liberals - they would gladly give you the shirt off someone else's back. Does BO really think that someone driving a crapbox worth less than $4000 can really afford a brand new car? Why doesn't the Gov go ahead and guarantee the loans too. Look how well that worked in the housing sector. We can thank Carter and Clinton for saying "everyone should have a home" They forced Fannie and Freddie to make the loans, and now we all have to pay for it.

As for the oil, USA is sitting on THE LARGEST oil deposit in the world. But the environmentalists have so much power, we can't touch.

:grrrrrr:Thanks for making me ugly before bed, LOL:lol:

Lets see, whats the tow rating for a prius? 10 lbs? thats about 3490 lbs short of being able to pull my boat. I dont think you can get 2000 lbs of topsoil in the trunk can you? no? huh

In one of the articles i read, it said "all autos turned in will be scrapped". Thats alot of wasted vehicles. damn democrats need their heads screwed on right

Just think how many 4 bolt blocks, TH350s and TH400s, and Dana 60s will go to the smelter. What a waste. I thought the environmentalists want us to reuse..............

This program will really hurt the aftermarket. Parts stores and repair shops will suffer.

Jimmiee, seriously, I didnt even think of that. A whole lot of people will suffer that. MORE companies bankrupt, MORE people out of jobs.

I think the whole thing is misleading. When I first heard of this they made it seem like you will get your trade in value whatever that may be, plus the rebate. In reality all you get is the rebate.

That's why this plan is so stupid. If your car isn't even worth 4 grand, how on earth can you afford a new car, full insurance, excise tax, etc? Once again they take money out of our pockets and give it to someone else. At the same time, impacting repair shops, used part pricing, on and on. Our non representing representatives are so out of touch with the real world. When you make 100K plus, and everything is paid for, you think everyone should be able to afford a new car payment. And those that can buy new can go get some $500 clunker from the classifieds, and make 4 grand. The add I saw on TV actually showed a pickup with no grill on it, all stove up. What a disaster.

Ya'll know this programs been in existance in one form or another in a few states for years right, and it hasnt hurt the economy or taken a lot of older vehicles off the roads.
California is the most notable state thats been doing this since the early eighties. They average about 1500 cars a year which isnt much when you figure they sell a few million cars a year in that state.
Texas has a version named TARP that's funded to take about 2000 vehicles off the road annually.
It doesnt change the fact that the buyer still has to be able to qualify and make the vehicle payment along with insurance, tags, and up-keep.
The alloted funds for this program are limited so it isnt like everyone wanting a new car is able to qualify, and theres still other qualifiers that have to be met to get the money.
Most cars turned in on these programs are ready to be crushed, most of them I've seen it was a wonder they made it to the dealership. You cant simply pull a car out of the field and haul it in either, they have to have been registered recently.
This really isnt something new and in the past it hasnt proven to be a large problem to the aftermarket.
Look at the SEMA website, they didnt even put up a big fighti against this law, it isnt worth wasting their money to fight. And if anyone would have reason to fight it SEMA would be the organization

A friend of my father's just took advantage of this cash for clunkers thing on his old 86 Ford dually, the truck was a total piece of crap but they took it. They asked him for several things:

Valid Driver's License
CLEAN title for the vehicle
Registration from the past 2 years consecutive
Proof of insurance on it for more than 60 days

Basically like tbplus10 said, you can't just go in a field and drag one out and get a ton of money for it. They are smarter than that.

In 1986 I used the program in California to get a decent trade on a 78 Pinto for a 1986 Toyota x-cab truck (I was transfering to the Philipeans for 2 years and needed a reliable vehicle).

And earlier this year I used TARP in Texas to update our fleet of haulers before we sold the company, we got just over $85K to update, each truck had over 350K miles and numerous other issues.
The nice thing about TARP is you keep the vehicle, a state inspector comes out and drills 1" holes through the engine block to certify it's nonoperable and the title gets a special certification so it can't be registered again. your free to part the vehicle out or sell it off whole to the scrap yard.
