Even though I am not a stereo person, I can't wait to see this write-up because I have always wondered what was involved in doing one. I actually NEED a replacement stereo in my S-10, because it is starting to die and 75% of my speakers are shot and it's just shot period. I hope you have room for the 6 disc changer in that dash, if it's the kind that goes behind the head unit then you are going to have some fun with the HVAC system. :great:

im planning to mount the changer under the driver or passenger seat, it even comes with 16' of cable, so i should be good:great:

i just checked the ups tracking thing (i ordered standard shipping, isn't that supposed to be usps?) and it is in HODGKINS, IL, so i looked it up on google maps and entered from their to my house and it said it should take 1 day and 2 hours. i wish that was true...

Can't wait to see this write up. Are you getting all the bells and whistles like satellite raiod and ipod connector? I have my ipod connector in my glove comp. so I can keep my extra ipod in there. Currently have to pull head unit out to reseat the satellite radio wires though. It stopped working for some reason. Good luck.

Just make sure whenyou hook that radio up the factory plug that goes into the radio doesn't have the switch power you need to turn the radio on. It does have the constant power just not the switch power. The plug and play harness you buy does not come with that lead. Your going to have to get power from the colum in order to have the radio work they way it's suppose to. Just make sure when your checking your wires that you use a volt meter and not a teast light because you can blow the air bag with a test light

the dash is held with push in clips so it prety easy and an easy place to start is under the lil cubby hole next to the climate controlls there should be enough room for your fingers to fit underneath

The door chimes do come through the radio and it's kinda silly but you can turn the chimes up or down through a function on the factory radio, but I do know when one of the guys here tried to put in an aftermarket in our 2500hd the radio would not come on with the harness he got from the car stereo shop. Maybe Crutchfield found out where to get the switch power. I hope it works, let us know if they have found that hidden harness that you can get switch power from.

Wow that looks like a really good quality kit, Clarion is a good brand I think. I am surprised it's all plug-n-play, I always thought there was a bunch of hard wiring to do. Did you get any speakers for it, just curious of you other audio upgrades.

well their is a lot of soldering which has to be done between the to harnesses and thats why i have to wait for my dad, but it might not be this weekend because my dad has to work:grrrrrr:

Oh yes SOLDERING, that reminds me of when I was doing my halo's. Me and my dad bonded over many hours of soldering, It is definately an art form once you get the hang of it. I had to d about 100 wires before I mastered the technique, hopefully you will catch on and learn something that will be useful the rest of your life.

ok, i have the wiring diagram in front of me, and it says te new radio has 3 power wires, the one with the 15 amp fuse which is for the memory, the 3 amp fuse is the bus power lead, which im confused by both of these, and then one that doesn't have a fue and that one is the power lead for accessory.

use wire nuts so if you sell the truck and buy another they just twist off..... you get the same connection with alot less work...... thats what i did
5speedsilverado
06-25-2009, 05:09 PM
it actually has a separate power antenna lead which is blue, the power lead is red, and i dont have an amp yet. so i dont worry about the red wire on the radio?

That looks about right. The 3 amp to bus power lead is new to me. Although, from what Iknow on the 2003+ gm trucks, the electronics are more advanced with a data bus that even the radio connects to. This is why the newer radios wouldn't work in an older truck even if you made them fit. maybe this has something to do with being adaptable to something like that.... i don't know. my radio doesn't have a bus power lead. Everything else looks good though.

The soldering and heat shrink look real tight, It should hold up very well. Did your dad show you how to solder, or did he lose patience with you and just do it himself. My dad lost patience with me when he was trying to teach me, but I am a quick learner and did all right on my own. I bet your excited to get it all wired in now, I am sure this will only light the fire for future audio upgrades.
5speedsilverado
06-27-2009, 07:49 PM
yeah i did a few of them, then i did all the heat shrink, it was pretty easy. and yeah i have more audio upgrades, mostly speakers and an amp

step 4: remove the 3 screws holding the stock head unit in place
http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab31/5speedsilverado/DSCN0957.jpg
step 5: plug wiring harness in to the aftermarket harness
step 6: take new ground from ne radio and screw it into the mounting bracket
step 7:mount up mounting kit
step 8 find a spot for cd changer, mine had to be mounted behind the seat in the vertical position
http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab31/5speedsilverado/DSCN0956.jpg
step 9: remove the interior panels, first the one behind the rear seat, then the door still, then the rear piller panel, and last but not least, the kick panel.
step 10: route cable with the other wiring behind the interior panels
step 11: place panels back to their spots
step 12: route changer cable up into the dash and to the head unit
step 13: connect every cable to its correct place
step 14: re-connect battery and test the new equipment
step 15: re-assemble dash
http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab31/5speedsilverado/DSCN0958.jpg

thank you, im not a fan of the color matched dashes, i like the texturedness (if that s a word) that the stock one has
