I'm not sure who i just told it to but I'll tell you what I did before I took mine off, I grabbed the digital camera and snapped a few pictures, with my hand reached in behind the grill. It was a little blurry but I was able to see what held it in place back there.
Maybe that would work for you as well?
If you are wanting to paint it and don't want to take it off then the automotive tape will be your friend! Just tape around the bowtie, add the paper and cover for the hood for good measure. Then do the prep and paint.
That help at all?

I think it was me you told and I'm pretty sure i got to see how its "attached" with a nice bright LED flashlight and i saw a bunch of tabs and "guides" i just don't know which way the tabs are pushed (in or out) to get it off the grill...

Sometimes you just have to break the first one...
:)
j/k!
Good luck with getting it off

They squeeze togather and then they pop out. That is how mine worked. IF you dont want to break it take it to a auto body shop and have them get it out. It wont cost that much for them to do it. Then you can take it home and paint it.

I realize that I don't have the NNBS, but all I ever did to get the bowtie out was take the whole grille off. I couldn't see paying someone to do that, I wish you lived closer because I would do it for a fee of course. :glasses:

Do you maybe have to add a clearcoat to maybe make it more 'chrome' looking?
Congrats on getting the bowtie off, but sucks it didn't turn out for you.

Would it be tabs holding in the GMC on the new Sierra's also?

I'll get pictures of the back of the bowtie once the paint dries... All i had to do was take of the plastic radiator cover held to the grille and radiator by 8 or so plastic pop rivets..

The clear coat might actually be a good idea, because the OEM paint has absolutely no shine until it has been cleared. I realize that it was rattle can paint, but the clear coat might help it out some. Can't wait to see some pictures.

Finally got it off.... tried painting it... this "chrome" spray paint... doesn't really come out as chrome... :-( wtf..that sux I tried some chrome paint once same thing. might as well have bought silver, if your really leaning towards chrome I think youll only get the right result from polished aluminum or if you find a oem that has acutaully been chrome dipped.I dont know of a DIY way of getting that look.

Update: Painting did NOT work out like I wanted it to...Scraped, peeled, washed, off the silly "Chrome" paint... with the help of some mild use of a heat gun... its practically brand new again...
1.) Making another attempt at using the "silver" carbon Fiber vinyl sheet... THis time I took some of that green painters tape (frog tape or so i've heard it been called) and put a couple layers of it, over lapping (as it is only 1/2" thick.. using an x-acto blade i cut away the excess tape. Now, With hopes to gently peeling this off into a single piece I hope to lay this back ontop of the vinyl sheet to get a mor accurate cut... Also I think i'll be able to "mold" the sheet so i can still get a "3d" effect.. .
here is a picture of where i am at so far.. AND as promised a picture of the rear of the 2008 chevy bowtie..http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dcn4314/DSCF0267.jpghttp://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dcn4314/DSCF0266.jpg

I understand the frustration, but why wouldn't you just go buy a chrome or billet bowtie? They aren't that expensive, but to each there own. Good luck with blacking it out. :money:
