View Full Version : GM quality, chrome coming off my wheels after only 3k miles?

I though my front drivers side wheel was a little dirty, under closer inspection I realized the chrome is actually peeling off the wheel. The truck is less than a month old, and only has 3,000 miles on it. It looks like heat from the brakes might have caused this because the metal under the chrome is discolored. I hope the dealer will replace the wheel, not just send it out for a re-chrome.

Here is a quick pic from my iPhone, I will get some better pics later.

You guys do know that those 20" wheels are "chrome clad," correct? This basically means it is an aluminum wheel with a plastic "chrome" hubcap or fascia covering the face. You can't just send it out for re-chroming, lol.

GM really dropped the ball with this one.

take it to the dealer and throw a hillbilly fit............tell them you want four new ones so that they are all new and you don't have to come back one rim at a time, unless it happens to your new ones. The quality is B.S.!!!

That's a good example of poor chroming and it sucks but you should be covered by GM's Warranty.

Be firm but not outrageous when you go to the dealer... I'm sure they will rectify this... It was probably just a bad batch...

That's discolored plastic you see under that peeling chrome right.

Are you asking a question, or being sarcastic?

Under the chroms on these wheels is solid metal, I could bash it with a hammer and it would not crack. I do not belive they have any plastic on them.

I'm sure G.M. have some chrome clad plastic wheels out there, but the wheels in question are chrome plated aluminum.

Those are the Chevy 20's. Do you honestly think that GMC (http://www.gmcpartsclub.com/vehicles/gmc-parts/) wouldn't follow suit when every other manufacturer is doing the same kind of cost cutting? Read through the posts and make your own decision. Chrome-clad (plastic cover, or steel cover to fool you even more) aluminum is not chromed aluminum, there's a difference. Call your dealers chevy parts (http://www.chevyclub.org) guy and ask him to find out the correct answer, or the next time you have your tires off tell me if the wheel is completely chromed, or just polished aluminum, or not at all. Try knocking on the front of the wheel and then on the inside under the tire.

When I eventually buy the sierra I want it will definitely be a talking point.

Edit: Also, if you look up pictures of real chrome plating which is peeling, you'll see the shiny nickel plating underneath the peeling chrome. The chrome will also peel off much thicker than whatever is peeling off of your wheel.

The dealer couldnt replace the wheel today when I brought it in, they said they need the 'factory rep' to come take a look at it before they can do anything.
