1997 Chevy Tahoe

I have a 1997 chevy tahoe that has been sputtering off and on. it has 163,00 miles on and the check engine light has been on for a couple of days what are the possibilities it could be? I live in Los Angeles could it be my cats on my truck or something any suggestions?

Would help to know how well maintained the vehicle is. Last oil change, tune up, stock or modified etc.

it is due for an oil change, I bought this truck from a friend a few years ago and I dont think he changed any plugs,wires,dist caps, or belts on it. The differential went out about 6months ago. I was looking at the plugs and wires the other day and they look a bit beat up maybe its time for a tune up it has 163,696 on it I have been getting terrible gas mileage on my truck as of late.
