Yesterday I found myself in a bit of a spot. I was headed back to my favorite hunting spot and it had rained the night before. I stopped before I hit the trail and put my truck (85 K-10) into 4 low and locked the hubbs to combat the ruts and slick mud. Needless to say, I got stuck. My rear tires were down in muddy ruts but my front tires were up on dryer dirt where there was plenty of traction and, if the front was pulling, should have pulled me right out. My rear tires were spinning like crazy but couldn't get the front to spin even a little. Any ideas? I'd like to do this myself and I don't know any way to check the 4x4 in town. The only way I know is to take it out to the mud and stomp the gas and see if i get all 4 to spin. Please help!

An easy way to check your truck is to simply jack up the rear end off the pavement. Put the truck into 4 Wheel Drive. If your front end is working it should pull you and the jack forward. Do not give it a lot of throttle when you do this. Just putting it into gear is all you need to do. Now if it wont move have someone look under the truck and see if the front drive shaft is turning. Do not leave the driver's seat with the truck in gear like this. What you will probably see is the drive shaft turning. If it is you probably have a broken hub or axle.. You will probably see one axle turning in front. The axle that is turning is the side with the broken hub or axle.

After further troubleshooting I have discovered that the front drive shaft turns but no power to front tires with hubs locked. I jacked up the rear end and put it in 4x4 and the front drive shaft turned but tires as still as a sleeping baby. How can I tell if it's hubs or broken axle?

If you look behind the front wheels you can see the axle U joints. If one is spinning then the hub is not working and all the power is being transferred to that hub since there is no resistance there.. If neither are spinning then you might have a broken axle. To check for a broken axle leave the truck in 4 Wheel Drive with the engine off and jack up the front end. The wheel that spins by hand will be the broken hub or axle. The wheel that won't turn is working properly.
