I am looking at buying a programmer, but i'm not sure what one is good. money isn't a issue, but i've heard not to buy a used one due to programing for VIN #. let me know what you have and what is good.

Either the HyperTech Max Energy or the Bully Dog Triple Dog Downloader will work great. Both cost around the same price. If you buy a used one, you run the risk of getting one that the original vehicle was not "returned to stock" before they sold you the programmer. If that is the case, then the used programmer you bought is totally useless!!!

If your truck is a diesel, then look at an Edge programmer also. Diesel's have more untapped energy than a gas engine. If you do have a diesel, then you will see a significant improvement. With the gas, not so much, but your gas milage will improve slightly. I like the programmers because you can change tire size, gear ratios, shift points, ect. A big plus is the ability to pull trouble codes yourself.

Hope this helps.

i have the bully dog programmer. Works great. calibrates tire size. Changes shift point. stock power setting, regular power settin, and performance power setting. Allows you to change gear ratios if u have puttin in different gears. I have no complaints. If not def. go with custom tune.

All I know is that I will never buy another vehicle without programming it. Check out craigslist, that way you could meet up with the person and make sure it works before you buy it. I bought a Superchip programmer for $125 on craigslist because it can change the tire size, gear ratios, shift points, shift firmness, takes away the rev limiter, the governor, and has 3 different settings for performance. The only thing is that when you program your truck and you choose to use the performace or towing setting, you have to use 93 octane that runs normally 30 cents more expensive per gallon which I think is right around $6.5 dollars more a tank. It's your choice but i think it is absolutely worth it. It will make your motor more responsive and if you have a cold air intake that bad boy will chirp so loud.

* also boost gas mileage! <-- it could, but I never get my foot off the damn pedal to find out
