We have a 2005 5.3l Tahoe Z71 with 187,460 miles on it.
A few days ago the transfer case started to go into random modes when the engine was started. You never knew what mode it would start in. Sunday after driving home from church (96 miles) I noted a knocking sound coming from under the middle of the Tahoe. Monday morning when I backed out of the driveway the transfer case made some loud grinding, crunching, Thunk,Thunk,Thunk type of sounds. But it did move very smoothly.
I pulled back into the driveway with all the noise and shut down. I am now driving our son's GTO.
Question: Is our Tahoe trying to eat it's own transfer case? If so, where do I get a new (rebuilt) one? Also, if (when) we replace the transfer case, should I also replace the shifter motor and encoder?
Thanks.
