Getting stuck offroad is usually not very amusing when you are in the middle of it, but afterwards you can manage to laugh a little. Post your tales of woe here.
My most recent was when a co-worker was following me down a dirt road at night, and he didn't see the ditch on the right side of the road. He high centered his ford. (yes found on road dead) The funny part was when the tow truck had finished pulling him out, the tow truck was backing down the same road and got himself stuck. Tow truck #2 was able to get the other tow truck out with a bit of work.

My favorite "stuck" story didn't happen to me. It happenned to some soldiers in Iraq during Desert Storm:
Some guys in a Humvee got stuck in the sand. A little while later along comes an Iraqi tank.
The Iraqis pull them out with the tank, and then surrender to the American soldiers.

I was out hunting with my wife and wanted to show off the 4x4 capabilities of my 1998 1500 silverado. "Always scout an area before the snow falls if you plan on showing off there later". I went off the side of the road crossong the area between the road and the tree line and completly grounded my truck"no wheels touching the ground" in a ditch. Knowing of course that I a former Marine, this is just a temp problem that I can overcome with my great driving abilities! After about an hour of brainstorming and my wifes sides hurting from laughing so hard, a furniture truck came by and pulled me out with a strap they had. Then my wife and I drove home at about 5 milies an hour because I had fried the tranny with my great "driving abilities" $1900.00 later and we have not been 4 wheelin much since!

I used to go off road at the "power lines" nearby my work while on my lunch break. I talked a friend of mine who had a wrangler into going along. We decided to take the trek a little further than usual, so it was new territory for me. I was always proud of the fact that my truck went through anything and everything. I was especially proud since it was only a 1/2 ton 2wd. Of course I was typically hauling A$$ up the hills, and steep slopes, where 4x4's would be crawling slowly up them.
But this new area had some high, but not wide humps. His jeep made it over just fine, but I got hung up on it. He had to jump up and down in the bed of my truck so that we could rock the drive wheels back onto the ground.
So, it's not exactly a really bad situation, but I'd say it's the worst I've ever had. Never really been stuck since then. Maybe I'm just more cautious now.

I've never been stuck.
I've had friends that have been stuck though. I think I typed on in here in the past, let me see if I can find it and just cut and paste.

We went camping in the Sand Dunes of Moses Lake, Washington about 15 years ago. One of my buddies had a '72 blazer and it was August so we had the top off, etc. He ended up going through a water hole and got stuck in the middle becuase someone in front of him got bogged down and he had to stop.
10 minutes underwater to the hood, we pulled it out with a long tow-strap, popped out the plugs and turned it over a few times. Water came pouring out! We let it dry for 2 days and put the plugs back in, let it idle for a couple of hours and everything was fine. We drove back to Seattle with no problems. lol.

My story begins with my girlfriend driving down from Maine in my '79 Jeep Cherokee. Her and her friend went on a side road to avoid construction and got stuck in a ditch facing downwards into a shallow ravine. A local was driving by in his Dodge p/u and tried to pull her out using a chain I have in the back. Well he tried for like 20 min to get her out and bent his bumper up doing so (HAHAHA never send a dodge to do anything but look pretty) did I mention it was a Hemi. So he left to get some help and returned with a friend. Now here is where it gets funny, they hook up and go to pull her out but my g/f forgot to put the car in reverse to lighten the pull load and left it in drive and hit the gas, there by pulling the light duty wrecker in the ravine with her. It took 5 hours and a semi wrecker to get them out. Damage aquired to vehicles 600 bucks on my jeep 200 bucks on the wrecker and one badly bruised ego of the guy in the Hemi Dodge. He was a nice guy though and I thanked him for his efforts as I pulled up in my old 2004 Chevy 3500 dually crew cab Diesel. God I miss that truck.

At work they call me the "King of Stuck" Needless to say the name is accurate. I keep asking them to lift my truck but they say it voids the warranty so they just keep rescuing me instead. Here is a picture of a spot I always drag the frame rails over. Instead of lifting the truck they are contemplating the Tundra since it supposedly has a higher stock ground clearance.

It seems that your company is more worried about the warranty than their budget. Maybe you should ask them for a raise, since it's obvious they don't mind throwing some more $$ around.

Weird how big companies will 'budget' their monies. They hire contract labor for dangerous work to keep their workers comp insurance low. (If a contractor dies on the job, they can just hire another contractor.) Then there is the capital expense vs operating expense issue. If they shift labor cost of an employee to the labor cost of a contractor there is some mumbo jumbo they spew about how capex is treated differently that opex in the tax code. Even though it cost more for the contractor, they 'save' money?
This is my " I got stuck story " from once upon a time , a long long time ago when I was in high school.
I was driving in the woods near my parents house with the girl I was dating at the time. Driving fast enough over the bumps and ruts so that she had one hand on the roof and the other on the seat to keep herself in the seat , I was having a good ol time. Making her chest bounce around like that , was good for laughs and giggles as well.
Over a hill we went and came down in sandy loose soil. The front end dug itself in while the rear was trying to climb over. Great ,, This aint gonna work.
" I have to get out and push , while you drive "
" I cant drive a clutch, WHAT am I supposed to do ? "
" Put it in first , slowly let out the clutch , and give it some gas at the same time "
" Isnt there anything else we can do ? "
" You wanna push ?" ( shes all of 5 foot , 100 lbs ) She just gives me a yeahright look
"hop on over and lets get this going"
first try = stall
second try = stall
"Dont let the clutch out so fast "
third try = Wheels spin , rocks flying , I'm ducking
"Ok , this time , try a little less fuel when you let the clutch out"
It worked . We 're out . She drove about twenty feet and stalled out when she stopped.
I got in and drove peacefully out of the woods and took her home . She didnt talk very much on the way (think she was ticked?)
I never did take her into the woods again after that , and I wonder if any other guys ever tried ... hehehe

after climbing all the hills and holes in the local hummer dealers test track(i was in a 95 sidekick suzuki w/street tires (i forgot i had a ranch hand cargo rack in my class III hitch, i get the bright(or not so) idea to back off of the steepest, shortest hill and end up with two in the air and two on the ground. after digging a hole under the rack and jacking it up and kicking it off the jack I WAS FREE!! the only loss being an old jack and a really new pair of dockers( i have no pride to damage since i gave it up to sell cars a few years back) oh well, DIE TRYING!

My Story Goes Back To 1978-79. I Was Working As A Civilian Dispatcher For A Small Police Dept. On Third Shift When One Of The Biggest Snowstorms To Hit West Michigan Came. When I Got Done With My Shift I Was Pushing Snow With My Bumpers In My Chev. Blazer On My Way Home. Only Two Of Us At The Dept. Had 4wheelers So The Chief Called And Asked Us To Come Back In And Help Out Getting Fresh Officers In And Third Shift Ones Home And Handle Emergency Calls. I Started Transferring Officers While The Other Guy Took Emergency Calls. While Taking The Last Officer Home From A Neighboring Dept., I Got Stuck In A Wind Row Left By A Large Snowplow Truck Trying To Get Down The Side Road To The Officer's Home. Much To My Surprise, A Couple Of Snowmobiles Came By And Hooked On To Me And With Their Power And Mine Managed To Get Over The Packed Snow Mound. It Was A Time When All The Community Got Out And Helped Each Other No Matter What Was Needed To Be Done. The Next Day The Natl. Guard Was Activated And Brought In The Heavy Stuff To Get Things Going.

I got stuck a few years ago in my '90 Astro Van. We had pulled off on the "grass" to look at some property. The grass was "damp" from the dew (no rain) and the sun was shinning. I had a set of low profile tires (new) on the van and when we started to leave it would just set there and spin the tires! I finally got it back on the road by me pushing it sideways while my wife was spinning the tires. I thought I was going have to call a wrecker to "rescue" me. No mud, just wet grass!

My most recent "stuck story" comes from this past November during late muzzleloader elk season. I still had my Tacoma and my buddy has a 1989 Suburban w/4" lift and 35's. We had split up on seperate roads when he tried to pull off the road to let another truck go by and got hi-centered on the snow berm left by the snowplow. His left front tire was off the ground and he couldn't budge so he called me on my Garmin Rino to come and rescue him. We hooked a tow-rope up and had to get a running start in reverse and finaly jerked hard enough after 3 tries to pull him off the berm.

I never got stuck, but thought I'd like to share this:
I'm in the Air Force, and was stationed at Clark Air Base, Philippines in 1991. Mount Pinatubo erupted that year, and caused destructive mudflows near the base. The mudflows wiped out many bridges. A few weeks after the eruptions, rivers were passable as long as the water was low. Still, you can misjudge which part of the river was shallow enough. One time, I crossed a river in my trusty Nissan Sentra (2wd, of course:biggrin: ) and got nervous when I started to see water going over the front of my hood. But I made it through, thank goodness:eek: ) That's the last time I went "off-roading".

During one of our famous ski trips to the lovely Bend, Oregon area, my friend and I had about 8 people with us decided to go off road on a snowmobile trail (don't recommend it snowmobilers don't really like it), and I was driving a 1997 Chevy Tahoe and my friend had his brand new 2006 Ford F350 quad cab. So we are bouncing around in about 4 feet of snow when all of a sudden we decide to turn around. My buddy in the middle of his turn buried the whole front end of his truck in the snow. Then it was my turn. I ended up getting the whole right side of the Tahoe buried up to the door. So we get out and start digging out the Tahoe, which was easier to get to then the truck. The Tahoe was free and here comes the best part. We get the tow strap out and her in the middle of a winter wonderland a Chevy Tahoe is pulling out a Ford F350 Quad Cab, it was beautiful! :)

We just started using Ford only at work (Nice) any way a co-worker and I pull up to a cut main line cable in a street being rebuilt (sand layer) so he pulls up on sand and me behind (I'm in GMC and him in Ford) We fix the cable and go to pull away, the 06 Ford ain't moving. By the time I got out to see what was going on. He was already up to the axel. So I go over to dozer ask the guy to give him a push. Now I have to get mine out of the way. Oh ya you guessed it. The 99 GMC rolls on like a champ. Parked my van out of way to go back and laugh at my co-worker... what are co-workers for...:)

Yeah, it was unsettling driving to see my car submerged so low into the water. Several cars did get stranded in the river, so I was one of the lucky ones.

My story happened a few years ago, my friends wanted to go wheeling up in the woods, so I went along with them. It was a party spot that everybody knows about (especially the cops). Well we crossed the small creek and made our way down a fairly small hill, keep in mind this was in the middle of winter. My friend with his '78 stepside chevy on 40's went through the ruts that were previously there while the rest of us spun cookies and threw mud at each other. Well 10:00 pm came around and we decided it was time to go home. The '78 chevy was the first one to leave. He made some pretty narly ruts. I ended up bein the last one out and at the time I was driving a '98 dodge 1500 (big mistake). I didn't make it up the first try so tried again only to get stuck on a stump. He tried winching me out and burnt his winch up. We didn't want to leave my truck up there all night to get broke into so they gave me a ride to our farm to get our monster John Deere tractor. Bombin up through the woods at 2 a.m. with a big tractor tends to attract attention. We finally got my truck out after forging a trail with the tractor lol. Most memorable trip ever!

Myself and a few others guys in my guard unit were bored so we took out a HUMVEE and decided to see the local country side, we found some nice muddy trails and were flying along when all of a sudden one came into a compost and a little bumb in the road and about 3 feet in the air and splash into a hole filled with murky water and mud smelling of the worst poop smell ever! we were buried up to the top of the tires. We jumped a dozer that was there and eventually got her out of the smelly muck and back to the unit, as we pulled in with mud and crap still clinging and some flying off the tires still, our first sgt came out and cught us parking it. He couldnt help but laugh being that we were all waist deep in the muck trying to pull it out, so new uniforms and 12 other HUMVEEs washed that day we were off the hook

My story goes back to 1978 when, here in Michigan, we had the perfect snowstorm and blizzard hit. Everything was pretty much at a stand still and I was working for a police department as a civilian dispatcher. We need to get the shifts of officers switched out and only two of us employees ( both civilians) had 4 wheelers. It was either volunteer or the Chief said he would take them under the cities emergency acts. So Tom in his 78 Blazer and me in my 76 Blazer went off to swap out the officers. As I got to where I was to pick up two guys, the road was blocked by a wind row of snow. I tried getting through it only to get hung up on the frame with all wheels off the ground. Along comes three teenagers on snowmobiles and after some hard pulling, they managed to get me free. We did manage to get all the officers taken care of and did the same for several hospitals as well as a couple of emergency runs before the National Guard mobilized and came in with tracked and 6X6 trucks. My 76 Blazer was incredible that 24hr period. I was amazed how well it went through some very deep and heavy snow. It would have made it through the wind row if the plow trucks hadn't packed the snow hard and it was hidden under fresh snow. Love my Chevy Trucks

My stuck story is from when i was about 6. My family belonged to a 4X4 club back then. My father thought it would be funny to scare my mother with the water near by. He went near the water and the truck leaned and became stuck. All the trucks tried to help get ours out and no one could get our truck out. We have a pciture somewhere. the truck looks like it will topple any minute. My mother and I slept in another family's truck and my mom made my dad sleept in the truck, so that if it feel completely in we would know where it fell, so we could find it. The next day, we were able to get the truck out and continue on.

involved my fathers tractor that my brother and I" barrowed " after it had snowed 24 inches we proceeded to get it stuck in a ditch and thought there was a good chance we would be beaten to death( It was legal for parents to do that back then.) inter farmer bob with his brand new 3/4 ton ford complete with aftermarket rear bumper. he backed up to us and tried to slowly pull us out. tractor didnt move, Farmer bob decides to back up right to us and get a running start guns it sends rooster tails flying thru the air, twenty foot long chain loses slack (tow straps wherent around yet) and pulls tight for about half a second, next thing flying thru the air is farmer bobs nice aftermarket bumper! Just as dad pulls up looking for missing tractor.I dont know what pissed him off more seeing his tractor stuck or me and my brother in the cab of said tractor laughing our asses off at the farmers expense! needless to say didnt sit for about a month(Im laughing my ass off just thinking about it!)

i have a few stuck sotries. lol yes ive been around. one of the best was when i was 15 and had a 1983 ford f-150 with the I-6 and a 4 speed with a granny 1st.running 33" all terrains. i loved the truck but while we were all out one night my dad let his friend drive the truck and we were going through this big hole. was about 100 feet long maybe a little longer. well he came to a hault and we were free spinning all 4 wheels. water was lever with the bench seat. as you were sitting your bum was getting wet. well the had the bright idea to shut it off. after that it was dead. didnt wanna start. so it sat there dead for 23 hours as 7 other trucks tried to pull us out. then later the next day my cusion come out with his 2001 dodge ram 2500 with the cummins . lifted 4" on 35's and a couple yanks he took the front bumper right off. so we went to the back. after a few yanks the back bumper looked like a noodle. so we wraped the rope around the bumper and the frame and it came out after a few more snugs. all i changed on it was the starter and a pin for the clutch assembly and it worked until we snapped a hub. a similar thing happened to me with my 06 silvy. but it was just the nose and it was mud not water i have pictures of it. i got pulled out with in 15 mins and all that came from that was mud in the air filter and my horn was caked with mud and still dont work like it should. lol sounds like a duck call.

I have been stuck numberous times (including 2 weeks ago in my Uncle's 8910 CaseIH tractor trying to field cultivate AROUND a wet spot). But the 2 that come to mind are as follows. I've always been one to tempt my fate when it comes to driving, well at the time I had a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo and my friends and I were going to a restaurant during a snow melting period. Me being the funny guy that I am, I drive off the parking lot onto the pile of snow left by the plow and park there. We eat and come back out, and I put the car in reverse and it didn't go backwards so much as it went straight down. This was a popular restuarant on a Saturday night, and my friends literally hid so as they could not be seen by any bystanders.
2nd story acutally has to do with a 4x4. I had an 84 Chevy 1/2 ton with 8" of lift, 38" Super Swampers, and a very healthy 402 Big Block. I had just got the truck together and was taking a co-worker for a ride on our lunch break (1/2 hour). Well I pull into what looked like an innocent enough ditch 2 miles from work, but what turned out to be a small creek. Needless to say I buried my front tires about 32" deep trying to get out, and finally gave up. Then had to run the 2 miles back to work in steel toed boots. It's funny now, but my co-worker was some kind of ticked.

I was 24 and had just began dating this smoking hot 37 year old. She was fun to hang out being that she was up for anything. I was driving a 1997 nissan pathfinder and picked her up for a stroll down to galveston island. Once we got there i thought is would be more fun to go to san louis pass and play on the sand dunes. Well there was a spot on a trail that had a little bit of water built up in it but it appeared to be real shallow. She thought i should check it before i cross it but i told her that i knew what i was doing and put it in 4x4 and began crossing slowly. I made it about half way across with still only being in six inches of water and the front of my truck dropped off the edge of what seemed to be a 4 foot drop. Wel the lights went out with the engine stopping immediatly and water flooded both of us as i hopped out the window and ran to the other side to pick her up and carry her out of the water. It was one of my more embarrasing moments. But i made money on the full coverage insurance so it all worked out well. Now im with a hot 26 year old. Lol ... Hope you enjoyed.

it was a cold winter night and we were BORED..took a trail weve never been down..didnt think it would be a big deal because didnt see and puddles bigger than a foot long..and somehow i found the tiny puddle that had no bottom..next thing i know the truck is buried halfway up the passnger door..long story short we ended up breaking 2 tow straps, 1 come-a-long, and 3 chains.a jeep attempted to get up out with no luck..so "a friend" brought the brand new brush truck from the fire dept.(2006 Ford F550 w/warn winch)..well wouldnt you know that thing was so heavy it got stuck before it even got to my truck!!so we finally called a tow truck to pull the brush truck out(priority) and then my truck..so after 6 hours in the cold mud and 26 degree weather i was finally out..we even built a fire to stay warm
between attempts!this with 3inch lift and 35s

ive been stuck way too many times but the funniest time i think was when we were down at the salt creek in my 87 toyota its 2 wheel drive but we were on the flats an the truck was light enough not to break the crust so we could just rip donuts like crazy and after 20 of straight donuts we tried to drive off but i was so dizzy i ended up driving out into the creek without realizing it till just sunk past the axles lol

I don't mud too much, I'm not a fan of cleaning the engine or what it does in the engine compartment. But I remember my friend called me up when he was stuck in his Jeep Cherokee and the only thing that I could hook up to was his leaf springs lol. No hitch or hooks and his axle was buried. A little while later the Jeep's radiator was plugged with mud, internally, and he couldn't drive it more than 5 miles haha, don't ask me how mud got in his coolant.

Bavk in the 70S, a lot of farmers bought 4 wheel drive trucks for the farm, when they actually needed John Deeres. Sometimes the oldtimers would laugh at them, but that was fine. Now getting a 2 wheel drive truck stuck and walking home to get the tractor was one thing, but Really" getting stuck in a 4 wheel drive might take 2 tractors to pull them out. The only thing that save 4 wheel drives for some of those guys, was the aftermarket.
How many times have you broken chains trying to pull someone out of the mud that is buried to both axles andeven the suction is working against you?

This week I got to add to my worst stuck tales.
Monday after work my boss (Jesse) and I were drinking a few beers and bull####ing when he said he thought his Jeep Cherokee could beat my Tacoma in a hill climb. His Cherokee is a stock 2001. My Tacoma has a 6" lift, solid locked frt axle, 3.4 w/TRD supercharger and fuel mods, locked 9" Ford r/r axle, 35" allterrains, Marlin Crawler twin stick trnsfr case, 5.29 gears, full rock sliders, skid plates and rock crawler bumpers, it's been across the Rubicon without damage 3 times in the last 5 yrs.
Since there arent any hills close by we decided to climb the 5' wall coming into the loading dock doors of the shop.
I had a chance to back out because I rode my bike to work Monday. But foolish pride made me drive the truck to work Tuesday.
Tuesday afternoon we decided to go out back and see who had the best truck.
Jesse went first and after 10 mins. couldnt even get his front tires to start climbing the wall.
So I rolled up to the wall, bumped the front rock guard against the wall, nailed the hand throttle to 3300rpms, slid the front end over the ledge, the front tires grabbed and drug the truck up the wall until the back tires grabbed, then popped them over the ledge. I got 20' in the shop hit the cutting brake, spun the truck around on itself then proceeded to crawl back out the dock door.
Trip #1 went so well (and fast) that we gathered a crowd of on lookers from the warehouses around us, so after a little prodding from everyone I decided to make a second trip.
On trip #2 just as the rear tires were coming over the ledge I felt a hesitation, heard a loud bang, then the truck lurched forward 10' and died.
When I hopped out I could see T-case fluid all over the floor.
Our shop doesnt have any ground level large doors, only personnel doors, so my truck wasnt coming out until I got the T-case replaced.
As luck would have it the only shop I can find that I trust to rebuild a Marlin Crawler is Marlin in Washington state, I make a deal with them to get a new Crawler shipped out overnight priority. I pull the busted T-case and crate it up just in time to make the Tuesday afternoon Fedex pickup.
We push the truck to the side of the shop out of the way.
Wednesday morning Jesse is in a panic, our regional manager is unexpectedly on his way to the shop and will be here by noon.
Jesse and the regional dont get along and Jesse suspects a truck parked in the warehouse might cause a few problems (like unemployment for him and I). Damn, because of the drop the truck cant come out the loading dock unless its under its own power, or we can get a flatbed wrecker or semi trailer backed up to the dock door and roll it out that way, if we had more than 90 minutes before the regional arrives this might be a feasable plan.
Instead a couple carpenters from next door overhear us and come up with a great plan. They build a false wall around the truck in about 45 minutes.
We probably woulda got away with it if we had remembered to scrubb the tire marks off of the dock wall and warehouse floor.
The regional manager followed the tire tracks to the new wall and as we were laying smoke and covering fire to get him away from the freshly painted false wall the FEDEX guy arrives with the new T-case and asks if were gonna try climbing the truck into the loading dock again now that we got the parts to fix it.
Uhhh no dude but thanks for throwing us under the bus to our boss.
The regional manager put two and two together and after we told him the story (luckily for us) couldnt stop laughing.
Marlin called this afternoon and told me they were gonna give me the new T-case under warranty and not bill me ($1250). During teardown they discovered a shaft had come unseated and allowed the gears to slide off the shaft and into the outer casing.
We didnt realize until they told us to look for the gear, but one of them had come all the way out of the case by punching a hole through it and was imbedded in a wall about 25' away.
The Tacoma is back home tonight and I guess alls well that ends well.
Maybe next week I'll try going up the loading dock backwards, ahhhh maybe not, maybe I'll just use a little better discretion when people start daring me to do things.

I'm not sure, I knew the case was cracked open but I didnt realize it had flung any parts out until they told me it was missing a gear. Took about 5 minutes of looking before someone saw it sticking out of the wallboard.
I've broken factory T-cases before but this was a first for a Marlin case.
