With the recent fuel price hikes, it got me wondering what I would do if it either became so ridiculously expensive ($10.00/gal) or the fuel just ran out all together.
I'm thinking I would set a plan in motion to convert to LNG, or LPG.
In the mean time, I would start walking, or riding my bicycle for the first three weeks (minimum) until all of those fuel sipping cars had run out of gas. Then I'd happily drive my gas guzzling beast down the uncrowded roads, and love every minute of it until I ran out of whatever gas I had left.
What would your plans be if it ever came to that?

I would eat lots of baked beans, and convert it somehow to liquid fuel

I actually had that in as one of the voting options, but I took it out, thinking no one but me would do that.

If the gas runs out that means the crude has run out. Going to be more worries than what to do with our vehicles. No electricity, no heat, and so on. Also, while they find just pockets of natural gas a lot of it is found in the same wells as crude. So if the crude runs out you just lost a bunch of NG production.
Hopefully by the time the crude runs dry( could be in our lifetime )they have come up with alternate sources to power our vehicles. Hydrogen, electric, straight ethanol or other renewable bio fuels that can be produced in suffficient quantities. etc...
The ever rising cost of fuel is a very real concern for me. People better wake up and start conserving now before it is too late! Can't keep using gas like it is water out of the garden tap. Those days are long gone.

So here's a follow-up question. Would you rather Drill in Alaska...or run out of oil?

I don't know what I would do if we ran out of gas, since I have to have gas to run my mowers and everything, I guess I would have to buy electric equipment and lots of extension cords for those big yards

The really bad part will be that we have not really done enough "up front" to prepare for that situation. It is not like we have not had plenty of warnings. Alternative fuels need to be made a "real" priority. If Brazil can go to Ethanol from sugar cane, we should be able to do the same or similar in this country. But that is just my opinion.

Actually you didn't offer an alternative (the closest was protecting my stuff from siphoning) that fit. After watching the seasonal nature of gas prices my wife and I decided that we could capitalize on cheaper prices by buying extra gas when it was cheap and transferring it to a tank on our property. This way when gas is expensive we're not affected by it as it will most likely come down in a reasonable amount of time before our extra gas is gone.
If you look for used tanks (check farm sales/auctions) you can buy them cheap enough where they'll pay for themselves within the first year.
If you really wanna have some 'fun' research peak oil.

well i has already run my cars on E-85 for 1½-2 years now so i dont not really now what i shall say ;-) its a easy rebuilt and with E-85 u got even moore power in your engine ,, the way i use E-85 isent the pollutions that comes in the first place but the engine runs mutch cleaner and gives less pollutions "automaticly"
yust add moore fuel ( ca 20-30% ) and u are home with running E-85 but then u also can adjust your timming mutch tuffer and then i get moore HP

Sad to say, but I'd have to find a new job if we ran out of gas. I'm a community based nurse--wouldn't be able to assess my patients in their homes, unless they were within walking or bike riding distance to Cumberland...of course, then there's the hills to deal with on the bike! I'm sure it would take some time to convert the vehicles to an alternative form of fuel...good thing I have lots of vacation time on the books! (always try to see things from any positive that could come of it!!)

It always has always amazed me that John Kennedy could challenge this country to put a man on the moon in 10 years (and the country do it) and we can't get off the oil wagon.
My Suburban is off the road. I now only use it for towing my travel trailer and going to dinner and wedding (only the beat baby). Last fall may Civic was paid off and I went out and bought a Sentra.
My wife and I work 25 miles from home and of course we can't ride together so I was not only driving the he.. out of the Suburban but I was running two vehicles.
Being a budget nut. I have calculated that between the lower car payment and the gas savings, I'm "saving" at least $800 a year despite the additional insurance and I get the advantage of keeping the stallion in the barn so it doesn't get burned out and I can ride it longer. I don't like the style of the new ones.
BTW. Did you know that our illustrious president reduced research monies for alternate fuels while touting alternate fuel vehicles on the national news. I don't want to start a political discussion but we need to clean house in DC.

I was just reviewing the poll, and it seems that 3 of our members would siphon their neighbor's gas, and 1 of our members would sit outside with a shotgun, and guard his/her gas. Let's hope that none of our members are next door neighbors. Otherwise we might be short a member or three if we were to run out of gas tomorrow.

Well since i'm lazy as hell and work about a 1/8 of a mile from my house i suppose i wouldn't have to do anything but walk to the store for grocerys..........and that's only 1/2 mile from my abode.

We should already be drilling in ANWR! Should have started YEARS ago. The 1st people who will complain if gas runs out and we aren't drilling up there will be the tree huggers, yuppies, and left wing whackos that are the ones stopping us from doing it now.
We should also stop letting foreign countries like China come in and buy up our domestic oil wells and take the crude out of here. Time to circle the wagons.

How will you get your equipment there without gas to drive the truck there( sounds like you are a landscaper )and how will you power that electric equipment if you do get it there? If gas is gone that means the crude is and that is going to mean major problems with electricity.

Well, You Could Convert To Something Else But As We Know In The Northeast, Natural Gas And Lp Gas Costs Has Gone Up As Fast As Gasoline And Is Limited In Supply Also. Electric Cars Unless Solar Powered Completely Also Needs Oil And Gas Used To Produce The Power To Recharge Them. Coal Fired Generators Are Used But Damaging To Air And Water Both Of Which We Need And Like Oil, There Is Not An Infinite Supply Either. The Oil Industry And Automotive Industries Has Done Everything It Could To Keep Alternative Energy On The Back Burner And We Will Pay For It In The Very Near Future While They Are Laughing All The Way To The Bank. The Automotive And Oil Industries Managed To Get Rid Of The Very Efficient Electric Train And Trolly Systems Cities Had For The Inefficient, Noisy, Dirty Buses They Pushed On Us And Now It's Come Back To Bite Us. We Can't Look To An Inept Government For Help. We Will Somehow Have To Dig Our Own Way Out. Not Sure How It Will Work Out But We The Average Joe Will Be The Ones To Pay For It..........

After hurricane Katrina sent prices on gas in my area to $3.29 a gallon I bought an old diesel Mercedes and converted it to run on used cooking oil. I am about to turn 18,000 miles on that car since buying it. I do have to start and shut down on Diesel fuel so I am not totally free from OPEC. I liked how this worked so well that I bought a 99' diesel Suburban about 6 months ago and have racked up about 6K veggie miles so far on it. This is not something the average person is going to do, there is alot of time involved in collecting filtering and dewatering to get the "fuel" safe to use in a vehicle.
Up yours OPEC,
Mike

Well living in the beautiful northwest, and living amoung the worlds largest population of greenies, I would probably convert to an alternative fuel and still drive my gas hog down the road while all the greenies were on their bikes or solar powered moped's.
If the price really got to the extreme of $10.00 a gallon I would definatly be riding my bike a little more.

Everyone could buy motorcycles.. My HHR gets 28-33 mpg. I guess I would buy a bigger gas tank and hide it.

Hi!
I undestand your concern.
In Sweden we pay about $6.25/Gallon and i have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer.
I guess you can say that i must be crazy, and maybe so, but the car is absolutely fantastic. Also i have a bad back and the car is high and quite nice to drive. I would like to use E85, but I'm not sure i can. The engine is quite modern so it should go with a software update.

Well I think I'd find out what welfare line up the oil executives were in so I could point at them and laugh. That would be more satisfiying to me.
I would say remember raising gas prices before long weekends? Who's laughing now pumpkin!

Damn that's expensive! How many miles/kilometers do you do a year? At those rates I'd be spending $150 a week for gas just for work, not to mention going to NH every other weekend!

I spend about $172 every month for gas, mostly to and from work.
We take small tripps at weeksnds, but not that much.

I'm troubled by the fact that in every post you feel the need to say that it's not a joke. I'm also thinking your only purpose for visiting this board is to low level spam us to death with your posts about MPG Caps.
Do you have anything else besides that to contribute to the board?

I would have to say if we ran out of gas I would have to go siphen gas from all the cars I could find around and then go look for a new job (I put gas stations together tanks, piping, wireing, pumps )
