View Full Version : Gas prices change driving habits?

I drive much less because of the high gas prices. How have gas prices affected you?

yes, I skipped needless trips. Fuel prices keep on getting ( €1,50 per liter) worse over here. I'am thinking of converting the car to LPG.

Sounds like it's the perfect solution. If you want to be left alone, let her shop at Walmart. At least she's not shopping nieman marcus.

Shaving kit (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod36640052&parentId=cat000681&masterId=cat000680&index=0&cmCat=cat000000cat000672cat000680cat000681)...what a bargain at only $100.00 before shipping:eek:

well back to nieman marcus, i dont need to shave my face that bad. I'll take the buck knife to it and use sour cream for shaving cream before i spend 100 dollars on it. I NEEED THAT MONEY FOR GAS!

Seeing we have so many vehicles on the road and off I just consolidate trips to the vehicle that will do the job.

The Fiero has always been a grocery getter and errand car.

The Burb is more of a tow/feed/ family car.

The full size Ford vans are just used to get hay, 30 square bales at a time, rain or shine.

The plow truck is just for plowing and fencing so that really hasn’t seen much use at all lately,

Now the golf cart has gotten a lot of use lately, we use that to haul meals around for the animals on the farm and getting to and from garden spots.

But I have considered using it to get to Wally World, we are less than a ¼ mile from the back entrance. All I would have to do is register it as an ATV and it would be legal to do that.

I only drive 1/8 mile to work round trip so i really don't keep up with the price or change my driving habit. I usually fill up every 4 to 6 weeks.
I do however see a difference in my boat! 35 gallons! i'm gonna have to start charging admission!

I still use my suburban when I need to, but for light loads, I strapped a milk carton on the rear of my bicycle. I keep the tank on my burb buried on full, so where $10 will easily top it off

as for my GMC van, gonna try and trade it for an 87-91 Buick Le Sabre/Park AvenueIf you're going with an 87-91 H or C body, I recommend an 89-91 Bonneville. My 89 used to average 25...20 city, 31 highway. Great cars. Love my 3800! Got rid of my 89 and got a 93. Love it even more.

Back on topic..

yeah...gas is a pain. Filled my tank for $105 last month.....and 3 days ago for about $80, so its getting better...i think:neutral:

I average about 15.8 according to the DIC, so I guess I just need to lighten up the right foot a little and get 16.8! :glasses:

Also, side note. Exclusively shell & chevron. But about 98% Shell.

I've switched over to E85 completely and it's $2.97 in Los Angeles. Burns faster than gas, but my AV runs like a dream on this stuff. It's getting warmer, so I'll be riding my motorcycle more in the Spring/Summer, but I drive the AV every chance I get. :rules:

We live in the country and we drive seperate vehicles as we work odd hours. We do go for a weekend ride every week and that's entertainment for us, which if compared to whatever else one must do for entertainment it's still pretty cheap comparitively. I won't plan more driving trips but I won't plan less either. No matter what it costs, I'm gonna buy it as I don't like horses enough to ride one. It's sad that it has to cost so much as I burn 2 gallons a day just going to work and back.

I use my burban as a commuter during the winter. During the warmer months it's mainly used for trips to the local Menards or Home Depot run or the occasional "Can you help me move this?".

It has 189,xxx miles on it and when it comes time to get rid of it, I'll miss it... Anyone know of a good, reputable place that could restore it back to its original glory?

Thanks.

I am glad to say we have changed our driving habits; but not because of the prices, just to conserve.

Our Suburban is and always will be only a trip vehicle that we drive only 5 over the speedlimit instead of our normal 10-15.
I walk my errands much more. My wife and 1 year old will once the temperatures warm up.
I think our biggest savings is planning ahead: buy groceries for the week or more, buy enough nails, screws, etc. when planning a fix-up project.
I work at an equipment rental store and frequently see/hear people do this, especially sales reps: Leave their pickup or van running then complain about gas prices. You know the type.

Kind of like an employee who complains he can't make ends meet, but misses work by leaving early and taking additional days off.

I get 30mpg with my Regal, so I use that for my daily work commute - but I only work 10 miles from home, so $30 will last me nearly 2 weeks. I take the Sierra to work on the occasional Saturday I go to work, only because I miss driving it. I never intended to drive it alot, but ... I tend to use it less knowing it only gets 15mpg. The Tahoe is my wife's vehicle - she uses it for everything she does: work, stores, kids, etc. She only works 4 miles from home, so it's not bad.

All in all, we only pay about $100 a month in gas. The only time it bothers me is when I want to go on vacation in the summer and I have to drag the trailer for 2000 miles at 9mpg and $3.50 a gallon. THAT stinks! But you plan ahead and save up because it's STILL worth the money for the two weeks of MUCH NEEDED stress relief.

My neighbor bought a CNG pickup, so he's only paying 65 cents a comparable gallon ... BUT he's now got a car payment of $350 a month on top of that. Doesn't make much sense to me, but ... OK.

I answered No, I drive the same and just pay.

I ride this baby as a daily driver, gets about 48 mpg.

Only take the truck when it is raining or a bit chilly.

When I take the truck, I don't feel the price of fuel pinch too much :)

We drive about the same and since we are both retired and live in the country and have no need for unwanted driving, but when we need to we use the 01 Impala, or in nice weather the 57 Chev wagon. Run the truck to keep it mobile, and are taking it on our trip to North Bay. Good day, Henry.

We don't drive all that much, my 2007 TB SS is 16 months old with only 9,500 miles (I work 5 miles from home). My soccer-mom wife also just traded in her 2000 Sub (only 70,000 miles in 8 years) for a 2007 Sub and since October we only have 3,200 miles on it.

The gas prices suck and we try to carpool a little more but in general not much we can do about the driving we do. I drive all over the country in my Impala SS racing it BUT there are only about 12-14 races each season so I only put about 5000 miles per year on it.

Yeah i stay around 70mph on the highway. Speed limit is 55mph for about half my trip to work in PA, and its 65mph the other half. I have found that a steady 70mph saves on gas and surprisely saves on having to slow down for traffic. 70 seems to be the perfect speed. I used to do 68 in the 55 and 79 in the 65. found I was always having to hit the breaks.( I know..its surprising:neutral:) And on the other end when I tried doing the speed limit I would still have to hit the breaks or speed up to pass somebody because of someone else coming up fast.( Plus I felt like I was crawling too.) I have a bit of a problem with speed:great:, or should i say the cops have a problem with speed. I love it.

I had a 2001 Ford V8 Explorer. It averaged about 16 mpg. Being a car guy, one of my joys is find a way to get by with something cheaper (and better!).

I realized that it was actual pretty rare that I needed the "truck" features of my explorer...and when I did I could use more of a real truck. So hatched a scheme, sell the explorer and buy two vehicles that would match my needs better...and have money left over for fun!! I needed a small fuel efficient car and a big old nasty HHV (huntin' and haulin' vehicle)

So I hit craigslist about twice a day while I was at work. I know the good deals go quick so you need to call within a few hours of the post.

I knew I wanted a wagon. I need the room so I could still go pick up big car parts and go camping and fit my canoe on top for fishing. I found a 1997 Excort wagon woth 127,000 miles for $1,200. It gets 25 city 32 hwy. It needed tires and shocks, but with a blue book value of $2000+ I took it. I now have 140,000 miles on it, the purchase price has been paid for in gas savings alone!

Then the fun!! I started watching for a big old truck on craigslist as well. I found a guy asking $1000 for a 1989 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban. I called, we talked, I wasn't too compelled, so I waited. He called again said someone else was "on their way", but if I huried he give to me since I called first. I said..." I'm gonna pass".

A few weeks went buy and saw him post again, this time for $750. he was moving...needed it out of his parents yard. I called and talked to him some more, tried to decipher if it was even worth going to look at...but sat again.

Finally..a week later he called and said I could have it for $500. This time I went to look. The truck burned tons of oil...and the brakes sucked. But the interior was nice, floors were solid, and the frame was solid. Seemed like a safe $500 investment with a Dana front end and 14-bolt rear with a TH400 trans and working 4x4. and cold A/C. Plus all the rust would give me a place to practice my welding! So I drove it home in a giant blue cloud of smoke and listening to the sweet rumble of a broken dual exhuast!

So now I'm on a mission to see how cheaply I can turn this old beast into a reliable HHV. I found a set of awesome swamper tires with only 7000 miles on them on CL for $150...took those home (in the back of the wagon), then I found a younger 350 for $200. I took that home too (in the back of the burb)

I have just over $1000 in the project so far ($100 for tire mounting) I just repaired the rear brake lines last weekend. We'll see if the rear drums/wheel cylinders last. The fuel lines have a leak during brake line repair (all the hard liens back there were rusty), but once I have that done...all I'll need is the engine swap this spring...which I hope I can do quickly and cheaply, then a cool matte black paint job and I'll be set for some serious huntin' and haulin'!

So the expensive gas has moved me to purchase two new vehicles (at least new for me) plus I get cheaper transportation (the wagon) and a cool new project! None of these cars are as nice as my leather explorer with moonroof...but they're WAY MORE FUN! (did I mention the Kawasaki Ninja 250? 70 mpg! got that too)

My 2007 Silverado 1500 LT is the only vehicle I own. I consolodate trips for supplies - I live in an undeveloped area in So Cal. - and vanpool to work 78 miles away. But then, I have been doing these things since I moved to the high desert. Until gas goes back down to 2 bux a gallon I will consider it expensive.

I like your game plan;
we use our Burban for towing and long trips (18 MPG) on cruise control,
Our 2002 Pontiac TA WS6 for road trips'
Our 1995 Buick GS for short trips, and family members,
Our 1968 Buick GS 400 is under/in the restoration process.
Like we do not take an "Elephant Gun to Hunt Deer.
Have a great day.

I have pretty much parked the Tahoe. Only use it when absolutely needed. Drive a Malibu 6 banger that gets 25 around town and 30 plus highway. We don't don't do needless trips now either. With gas prices the way they are, everything cost more now. This winter many of the County Road Commissions have cut way back in snow removal and some are out of winter funds now because of the cost of fuel. Think about it, everything is tied to fuel pricing. Another thing I see is that the fuel prices and profits by big oil have all jumped during the Bush administration. I have heard every dumb reason for price increases. Like more people in India using generators for power. These are people who don't make enough money in a year to afford a couple gallons of gas for a generator. We as consumers have little hope of ever seening 2 dollar a gallon prices. Not with powerful oil companies paying our government leaders large sums of money to see things there way. More like 4 to 6 dollars a gallon will be the future price. Big oil is the cause of the recession this country is into
Also, think about what problems may be caused by all these batteries being used in hybred vehicle or the loss of corn in the food production that is now used for biofuel ect. As you can see, one cure leads to another problem.

Yes, same story here. My 1500 is my puddle jumper. The 2500 is the off road boony crasher.
I am a musician so I use the 1/2 ton 'Burb for moving my gear around town. With anything smaller, I would have to make two trips. That is not cost efficient.

I just recently purchased a 2008 Tahoe LT3 Z71. I went from a Lexus RX330 to the new Tahoe.

I also just retired!

So, I expect my total annual driving miles to be somewhat less considering I was putting about 200 miles a week on the Lexus just commuting. And the Lexus was way too small for me. I had problems getting into it and out since I have a stiff back. It wasn't all that comfortable either because the left leg space for the driver was very limited. It had a left foot rest that made it feel like my left knee was in my chest! The ride was nice but not comfortable for me.

Now, my Tahoe is a pleasure to drive. I look forward to driving it every time I get in it. I've filled it up twice in the two weeks we've had it, once putting in $40 and the second time for $51. The truck wasn't empty either time, about 3/4 empty.

This is a $48,000+ vehicle. If I really couldn't afford the gas then I shouldn't be able to afford the vehicle. That should be part of your buying decision upfront.

Also, as I said, I just retired. After 39 years working for the Department of Defense plus my "parttime" job as an Army Reservist for 28 years, I feel that I'm entitled to some comfort as long as I can pay for it.

I'm not against having a cleaner environment, but if it wasn't for people like me who still by SUVs then there would be no incentive to make more fuel efficient vehicles or alternate means of transportation!

I hope those who are working on a greener world succeed. Who knows, my next Tahoe could very well be a hybrid or even a totally electric SUV. I would buy that! :glasses:

Well I never really made "needless" trips before... they had a purpose... sort of! No changes in driving at all with gas prices. In fact, I've somehow actually managed to move up to less efficient vehicles over the years. But I was well aware of the fact that big trucks with big engines use lots of gas and that gas prices were only going to go higher. :)

You can blame whoever you want, but if you don't like the gas prices, there are plenty of other far more practical and fuel efficient vehicles out there.

It is what it is folks!

I have made less trips to my favorite bone yard. Now, I make a parts list and go " look" all in one trip. Wifey got a company minivan, so the 98 is what I take on my errands, The 78 sits alot now. I play in the snow with the 78 mostly just to exercise it. The 98 gets ok milage for a K2500 subby. The 78 averages 7-8 mpg. But,the 78 is sooooo much fun to drive. It's so beat, battered, and rusted, people don't park next to it in the parking lots.
When I go back to work in a few weeks, I might have to carpool, depending on where I'm sent to work.

Gas was REAL cheap overseas....

It certainly shapes the decision as to:
- where I'm going today
- which vehicle I'll take
- whether or not I can take a load with me (tools, etc..)

I'm not looking to make this political (I happen to vote Republican), but I saw a bumper sticker last night that made me giggle... it was kind of like one of those t-shirts where a kid has a shirt that says "My grandma went to England, and all I got was this t-shirt!

It said... "My country invaded Iraq, and all I got was this expensive gas!"

By the way - $3.18 here in Bellingham, Washington today.

The wife and I plan all our trips now. We will do without something until we can make a trip worthwhile to the stores. We also have stuck to speed limits instead of that 5 or 10 mph over and it gives my wife in her Malibu and extra trip to work and back per tank. I also avoid the old jackrabbit starts and do my best to play the lights to cut back on idle time. It does work as I'm getting an extra 5 miles a gallon too. We have parked the Tahoe and are using the 6 cyl. Malibu. Truck will be for towing the camper only if we can afford to go on vacation at these ever increasing fuel prices.

I recall as a young mechanic I inadvertently mis-timed an engine I was tuning. The result of this accident produced a vehicle that was more fuel efficient, though lacking acceloration. Bear in mind that this was a time when few cars had ICMs and fuel injection. I'm sure newer vehicles are set to provide maximum distance per tank. So, if you or someone you know can confirm that mis-timing is the way to increase milage, help the rest of us out!

Beside slowing down, I just changed the air filter in my daughter's Alero V6 and her mileage jumped from 23 to 29mpg. The filter didn't look all that bad but I guess looks are deceiving. The proof is in the MPG readings. I did do a thourgh cleaning of the inside air box too. Will be cleaning and replacing the air filters in my car, the wife's car and my Tahoe whether they look like they need it or not. Cheap way to increase mpg.

I love this thread. After reading through all of the posts from months ago, I read one person complaining about $2.82 a gallon, one person said he/she uses a Fiero for grocery shopping, one person actually drives 1/8 mile (round trip) to work and the idea for the Iraqi bumper sticker gave me a chuckle too. Now I just wish that gas was back to $2.82 per gallon. I wish I could actually fit all of our groceries into a Fiero. I wish I worked next door to my office. And, where the hell is all that oil the French said we were going in for?

My wife and I haven't really curtailed our driving much. But, about a year ago, we began carpooling to work despite slightly different schedules. That move alone saved us about $80 per week in gas. Then, we went out and bought a couple of brand new ATVs. Now we have to carpool to pay off the ATVs (I only did it because I was trying to help Bush "spur" the economy). LOL

I find that we scrutinize every drive that's very long now. Like going to the outlet mall to return something. We'll get back $15 for the return, but it will cost $25 in gas to get there. We'd be $10 better off to just throw it in the trash, or $15 better off to sell it on craigslist for $5. ;-)

I just pumped $148 worth of California crud into the old Burb. :grrrrrr:
To keep a closer eye on my throttle work, I installed a stealth vacuum gauge in the ash tray...

I still drive about the same, but do think of ways to combine my trips. My DD used to be a supercharged miata ~15-25mpg, but I had to sell it to raise $$ for my new race car, a Lancer Evo. So, now I've got a GMC 2500 crew cab diesel as my DD. Luckily, I'm just a few miles from the train station that takes me right into downtown Denver.

I changed my driving habits alot. All those little things like no quick starts, speed, avoiding hard braking, ect. I find I'm pretty much in a minority. Travel the posted speed and keep it 55 or below makes other drivers irratated as does any other attempts to stretch fuel so now I'm just driving as little as possible. It seems very few people will let very high fuel price diisrupt their personal driving habits and pit those who try and save but get in their way. So I just sit back and take it easy and will continue to watch gas increase. We are a a small plateau now but I'm sure that as soon as the elections are done, back up it will shoot.

I work at Pick N Pull and we drain fuel from all the vehicles that come in. So we get FREE fuel so my driving habits haven't changed. In fact I am probably driving more!

I just got back from my vacation to Michigan's great north country and the Soo Locks. This trip was done without using the cruise control and on the flat areas, turning off the trail haul mode. We were towing our travel trailer. Using the simi truck approach of speeding down hills and keep the rpms as low as possible on go up the hills, increase my mpg significantly. Keeping the speed to 60 was also a plus and when in town, trying to catch the traffic lights instead of braking and stopping by just slowing down gradually until the light changes. They say 55 mph is best for gas mileage but my truck seems to like the 60 mph best. All vehicles have some speed they like to run best at I believe. I still see people in trucks and cars traveling way pasted the max speed limits of 70 so I guess the few minutes they may save or the speeding ticket they might get out weighs the price of fuel. Maybe at 8 bucks a gallon they may change their habits but I doubt it.

Yea I feel yall's pain I live in AK which produces a little less then a quarter of the U.S. gas and its at 4.40 a gallon. So yea its about 110 per tank. You would think living some where that can obtain alot of oil would have some decent rates.

We are sharing our 6 banger malibu and haven't driven the tahoe in 2 months. Gas prices have dropped but that's temporary and our budget is still reeling from the past prices. We have dectded to put the tahoe in winter storage and use it strictly for towing our camper. Love the tahoe's ride, size, abilities, but must make budget needs too.

I'm really looking forward to some awesome half-ton diesel options soon. I know diesel prices are high, but it still seems like a smart option. Great mileage unloaded and great towing ability.

Maybe the direct injection will be the way to go if Diesel prices don't come down.

Or you could take my approach, buy a $500 truck, spend $1500 building it up for what I want, then offset the cost of gas with the $500/month I save compared to what I would be paying on a new car loan.

my In- laws go to the extreme and I swear they know if gas goes up half a cent. The way I look at it, gas makes my Tahoe go so If I want to go I pay for gas no matter what it costs. i'de still be smokin if cigarettes were $20.00 a pack and be drinkin if beer was $100.00/flat.........lol

I use my truck for work during the winter months so I am pretty much stuck paying whatever the rate is. On the plus side, I get to bill my employer for some of my mileage.

On the latest poll, now I may be asking a dumb question, why don't the percentages add up to 100?
I thought the overall number should equal 100%

Just a thought

Got rd of my duramax GMC last year with diesel at $5 a gallon. Just bought a used silverado 5.3L in hopes of getting decent mpg. gatta have a truck, even if I don't drive it much. We bought a 97 Corolla for running around and it gets 40 mpg all around consistently. As prices have dropped we drive more....

I'm still trying to do all those little things to keep the mpg's up. The tahoe has only been driven twice in the last two months. All the work has fallen on the 6 banger chevy malibu. With gas prices somewhat lower now, using the extra savings so i can take the tahoe and camper out on vacation this summer when gas prices get back to the 4 to 5 dollar range. With a very snowy winter here, i've really missed the tahoe's 4x4 but have made due. Also here the roads are really get rough from potholes and years of neglect so that also makes slowing down an added bonus to saving gas.

I still see so many people wasting gas with the fast starts, high speeds, hard braking, ect. Not only wasting fuel and increasing wear and tear but all that added stress. Oh well, some don't care i guess.

I bought my truck for a purpose, it's used to haul my race car in my 28' enclosed trailer. No matter what the price of fuel is I gotta pay it if I wanna play. Other then that it doesn't get driven much at all. I have an 02 mazda protege5 thats paid off and gets 30-32 mpg's around town. In the past 2 weeks I drove my truck once just to keep the fluids running through it.
