I just drove 2400 miles in 10 days from Orlando, FL up to Dayton, OH. Back down from Dayton to Lexington, KY. A few little stops here and there.. never let the gauge get below 1/4 a tank but with setting the cruise control on 78 for most of the trip I was averaging right at 18-19 mpg. When I got up into the mountains I set it back down to 70 and I was still averaging 18-19 mpg. For my last tank, Macon, GA.. south. I set it on 75 and got right at 21 mpg... All of this is still a helluva lot better than my old Ford 4.6.

I went home this weekend (180 miles round trip) and got 20.8 mpg. That's not very many miles but the mpg was still slowly climbing when I got back into town. Two lane roads all the way. Stayed between 55 - 60 mph all the way in the rain.

I'm installing a Volant CAI this weekend and we'll see if it improves and how much.

I have about 3500 miles on my new 09 Silverado 1500 LT crew cab Z71 with 5.3l V8 (flexfuel). I drove about 3200 on a cross country trip across the western half of the country and up through mountains in Calif/Oregon. Haven't changed the factory oil yet, but my average mpg was between 18.2-18.6 mpg, and I was stomping on the pedal every once-in-awhile, just for fun :)

One of these days, I'll take a trip with the intention of besting that. But I assume that after the first oil change and the newness of mashing the pedal for kicks wearing off, will help my regular mpg go up.

That's also using 87 octane fuel. And a combination of highway, city and winding roads.

Hi,
I'm finally back again, sorry but i have been experimenting with these fuel cells, as far as the joe's cell never could get it to work well, so i went to the smack booster and am getting 41 mpg with a ford 4.6 liter hghwy or city consistently, so if your interested in it get on the internet and google the word smackbooster and they have posted the plans for it forfree, it will cost about $50-$60,per unit, some will have to buy or build an efie board for the 02 sensor to fool the computer, they work real good on a diesels ,just install the feed line on the suction side of the turbo.

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 4.8L reg cab long bed. When I keep my foot out of it, I can get around 18mpg. Usually it is more like 14 - 16 due to hauling or driving like a jerk. I have a few tweaks that improved the mileage but also made it fun to drive, sore of a catch 22 situation. (K&N air intake and flowmaster cat back exhaust)

Are you guys with NBS using your "Average" mpg on the DIC/instrument panel, or calculating manually?

Just curious. Over my 3200 mile trip (after buying) my DIC said I was averaging between 18.2-18.5 mpg. Now after too much mashing the pedal, I'm down to about 17.8 mpg.

I have an 06 Silverado. Purchased 1 mo. ago with 11,000 original miles! I track manually as well as computer resets. I calculate about 1-3MPG less than computer calculates. IF I assume that the ODOMETER is correct. I KNOW the gas station pump is correct. This will lead to an EXACT mpg. Why then the delta between my calculaton and the onboard calculation? Is the quantity of gas used as calculated by the onboad computer derived from an actual fuel flow transmitter or is it calculated from the fuel tank level float. (which are traditionally estimates at best.)

Scoutmaster.

ps. MPG runs about 17 over the road, 15 in town. NOT BAD for an old truck.

I dont know how anyone get 20 mpg! It is impossible for me to do, even if I had a 5.3 it would be worse, of course running bigger tires doesnt help either. At least we got rid of the 1996 chevy 2500 with a 454SS. You want to talk about awful mpg.

VectraGT
06-29-2009, 09:40 AM
If you run anything bigger than stock you are going to reduce your mileage. Adding a lift or even a leveling kit to the truck will also reduce gas mileage. Looks or economy? you be the judge!

I've been getting approximately 19.8 mpg's in my 2005 Silverado Extended Cab 5.3L. My drive consists of about 40 miles highway and 20 miles dirt road. This is when I drive the posted speed limits and about 15-20 MPH on dirt roads.

If I have a frustrating day at work I tend to drive quite a bit faster and get on average 14.5 mpg's. :glasses:

But here's my question: where do I find what rear gears I have in this used truck?

Both are ALWAYS attached to 1500 pound (empty)trailers, so the load starts there and gets heavier as it goes. Any suggestion for more MPG that are proven would be nice. Thanks. Darrell

I average 17-17.5 mpg mostly no real highway but I live in a simi-rual area. On a 800 mile trip on I-95 running with traffic, 80+ at times, my 4.8 gave about 16.3/16.7. Not too bad for a 4X4 crewcab with 5 people, luggage and a large well stocked (heavy) cooler.

Well I got a shock today when I made my first fill up after buying this truck. I got a 2001 Silverado 2500HD, 8.1 L with 5 speed auto Allison trans, 3.73 rear. I only did a short test run of 200 km (120 miles). About a couple trips in varying lengths of travel, some 10km (6 miles), some 80km (48 miles).

The truck burned 48.327 L which is 12.76 US gallons (or 10.63 Imp gallons). That's 24 L (9.73 US gallon, 11.69 Imp gallon) per 100 km (60 miles).

That's 12 miles per US gallon. I'm going to shove a bottle of Seaform down its throat, clean out the MAF and replace the filter. We'll see then what happens.

1999 'Burb, 5.7 (120k miles), 2wd with K&N filter and the trailer package (lower-geared rear axle): 17 mpg at 75-80 on the open highway, 14-16 on LA freeways depending on how much of a hurry I am in. I can get 23-ish on the open highway if keep off the loud pedal and hold around 65. Best run was right about 26 at 65 mph on a 90 degrees Arizona day, drafting a semi on I-10.

Wife gets 15 on the highway...she likes to drive a bit...less elegantly.

2002 Saturn SC2 coupe: right about 38 mpg highway. Wife's car...I don't fit very well... put the car on rather than get into it.

Is that using Imperial gallons? Could your wife have been adding fuel while you slept? Is this running downhill with a tailwind and being towed the rest of the time? Is the body on the frame? Are you towing a trailer that has a motor that pushes you along? I have owned many full size chevy and gmc trucks and suvs, and it doesn't matter if you are running empty, with or without the AC, what ever, that doesn't happen at highway speeds. If you had skinny tires, overfilled with air, running on a 60F day, downhill at 45-50 mph, without seats, mirrors, rear doors and all the weight you could go without legally, you might get close, but then only if you were using imperial gallons(1 extra quart per gallon), or an alternative fuel source.

No I was awake the whole time. Only let it get down to half a tank. Number of miles we went since we filled up in florida divided by how many gallons I put in the tank equals MPG. Simple math. Stock 350 besides the true duals with 40 series flowmasters and no cats, with 186000 miles on it. new tires. fresh tune-up. doing the speed limit. Not sure what imperial gallons are. Just normal gallons. 20.2 MPG the first time and 19.7 the second time.

I was getting around 12, with 285/75-16s and some slightly smaller than the stock 265/75s. Recently, probably about a month ago it dropped like a rock, gettin like 80 miles less on a tank, about 11mpg, and slightly under. It may have something to do with the BFG A/Ts, those things are heavy, but I also have other issues like I listed below.

I did the intake manifold gasket right after it dropped off because it was leaking pretty bad. It has the K&N filter i cleaned/oiled a few months back, i need to check it.

Either way it dropped like a stone and its boggled me and the guys i work with.. Long term FT is the only thing thats screwy. its correct at -2 to -5% at idle but instead of hovering there while I'm driving its up at +15 to 19%. Hopefully ints not a fuel pump. These are good trucks, I guess I got unlucky and got a damn lemon.

I'll probably end up putting a magnaflow cat back system on the truck, something a little louder than stock but nothing as dronwing as flowmaster.

Lately i've been getting 15.5 mpg in the city. Still don't have a solid highway mpg average yet since I haven't taken any long trips.

I found out that the trick to getting better city mileage is accelerating quicker on starts to get up to speed then coasting off of the gas and hit the cruise to hold your speed. Before I was baby'ing it to get up to speed and I think that was severly hurting mpg's. It was about 13 doing that method.

my last tank is back up to 12.5..

I did an injector clean that sucks the cleaner straight into the fuel rail, cleaned the throttle body and switched over to premium gas.. That tank included a ~70 mile trip through the hill country though, constantly going up hills.. and multiple occasions of tearing ass to make sure the pinging was gone with the higher octane gas. This tank should be a better reflection of what all that actually did.

blakk0nine
03-15-2010, 09:42 PM
I found the exact same thing. I was surprised because you hear alot about accelerating slowly being the way to maximize mpg. But I think it's because you're hitting the better power band of the engine where it's making better horsepower and torque when you're on it and then momentum takes over. Because regardless of romping on it or not the computer says 4 5 or 6 mpg from take off and I think the quicker you get up to speed and can back off, the less time you spend at 4, 5. or 6 and can start cruising at 15 to 17mpg.
