View Full Version : What's your MPG?

I did a test over the last tank of gas, mind you it's been raining so I expected to get at least 10% less fuel mileage because of tire slippage.

My 99 Cavalier got 25.6 MPG over the last 268 miles. Not quite as good as it has been, but as I said it's been raining and I've been driving it more for short trips lately because it gets better mileage than the Trailblazer.

My Chrysler T & C was getting 20 mpg 50/50 highway city.
My 59 Suburban gets around 13. That's with the old 235 straight 6.

I think you may be over compensating for tire slippage at 10% IMO. You should only get that kind of slippage if your really getting into it, even in the rain. Or if your tires need replacing.

Well, I thought so too, but a local car guy on the radio (Ed Wallace) said on his show a couple weeks ago that the average is about 10-15% worse mileage when it's raining. I guess it's because of an overall lower co-efficient of friction.

i guess i get about 16-17 mpg in my trailblazer. There are quite a lot of hills around here and talk about tires slipping from rain! We invented rain!

I have been tracking my 2003 Suburban for a couple years separate from what the onboard trip odometer says. I average just under 15 mpg. There is rarely any major fluxuation in the mileage.

My 1997 sonoma gets over 32 MPG! I installed an electric fan, under drive pullys, and a cold air intake on the 4 cylinder 5 speed engine. Even with all that stuff to help the engine i would still lose a 0 to 60 mph race against an old lady in a walker!!!

I have not had the opportunity to check mine yet as I am still trying to get it through emmisions (just have not had money yet). Once I actually have it registered and on the road, I will be verifying the mileage...even when gas was cheap in the 80's as a teenager I checked mileage (my girlfriend lived 120 miles away from me)...it has always just made sense to do so. I always figure that if you know what mileage you are getting when you start with a new vehicle, you can build on that number or at the very least maintain it!

I've been tracking my mileage since I bought my truck, it is a 2003 Silverado, 2500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0 L engine. I've got 57K miles and I get an average of 15.3 MPG, this includes city, highway, and towing my ATVs.

All I've done is add KnN air system and a cat back exhaust (Flowmaster). Any ideas on what else can be done would be appreciated!

Hey, Jack...I'm not super familiar with that vehicle, but if it uses a throttle body injection, I have heard some people say that a spacer has helped their mileage.

On a side note, I see that you were Army...me too! I did not do as many years as you probably did (only 5), but they were by far some of the proudest years of my life! Nice to meet you!

I'm still around 16/17 I don't drive it much. So its not a huge concern for me. I certainly do feel for those of us on here that commute to work though. There has got to be a way to straighten out Big oil companys beside devine intervention! Has gas ever fluctuated this ridiculously in the past. I can't seem to ever remember it being this unstable...

It can pull small trailers all day. It towed a double axle car trailer (empty) on a three and a half hour drive to pick up the 1991 blazer. I knew it wouldn't tow the blazer so it got to ride on the trailer back home.

The 2 vehicles I currently use over the road are a '91 Ford F250 heavy duty 3/4 4X4 diesel auto and a '97 Ford Aerostar 4X4 with the 4.0.

The '91 gets 20 mpg if you keep it under 60 on the highway, with a personal best of 23.6, it drops to 16-18 in town depending how much I am rapping the pipes to drown out the buzzy rice grinder next to me. Of course the nearest town big enough to have these is 100 miles away so it doesn't happen very often. It does drop to 12 if I tie on to something really heavy.

The '97 gets 20-22 highway with midgrade fuel under 70mph, regular drops it down to 17-18, 16-18 in town(the 4 blocks to the other end of town to work for my wife).

Diesel fuel is now cheaper than gas so I will probably be running the pickup more than the van down the highway.

My partner and I tend to lead rather sedate lives.(translation: boring) We each average less than 5 miles/day. I keep track of the Saturn, and have consistently gotten 18mpg +/- a couple tenths of a mile. This is strictly driving in the neighborhood. Once I got it out on the highway and got better than 25 mph.
My partner has taken over our new '07 Equinox. I have not been able to get an accurate reading as she keeps accidently throwing away the slip of paper that I jot down gallons and miles on when I fill up HER truck. The "little man in the dashboard" (DIC) says we are getting 14.5-14.9 mpg. But again this is only slow poke driving in the neighborhood. About two weeks ago we did make a trip across town on the freeway and dash indicator read 19.5. I will hide my notes, and get a better figure. I'll post later.
I would be very interested to hear of the REAL figures (not dashboard read-out) from other Equinox owners.
Both vehicles are bone-stock and in tip-top tune and condition.

Respectfully,
BINGO53 :great:

I wonder about changing the differential (both of them) from the 3.73 gears to 3.08 or something like that. Acceleration would suffer but that's ok. Most of my trips are 30+ miles and I rarely tow anything bigger than my lawn mower.
Do you think 3.08 would increase the mileage by the corresponding 21%. If so, it would pay for itself in about 35000 miles.

In that case, I should think that it would even itself out to a point. Since you may encounter slippage at take off, that same lowered friction should allow the car to travel easier at cruising. Less rolling resistance, I would think.

MY 1991 Blazer with the 350 doesn't do to bad. It has dual shocks all the way around, electric fan, underdrive pullys, power raid TB spacer, jacobs electronic ignition (MSD) Free flowing exhaust with full length headers and an H-pipe with no cats. I towed my 20 ft boat about 50 miles round trip and burned less than 1/4 of a tank. I was also driving like that little old lady i had to race in my sonoma!

My 07 Colorado (4cyl, 5spd) gets around 23mpg mixed 60% city and 40% highway driving. I'm expecting it to increase though as it only has 3200 miles on it.

My previous car was an '03 Subaru WRX. I averaged just under 20 mpg if I was light on the gas, and around 17mpg if I got on it.

My '04 Cavalier got 32mpg driving 100% city... (shoulda kept it, graduation present = no payments)

I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado, extended cab, Z71 4X4 with a 5 cylinder enginer. I have been keeping track of this for some time and I get an average of 22mpg. I probably could get more but I have to jump on it some times. Unfortunately in New England there is no way to be "gentle" when you are driving. Has anyone heard about putting a little acetone in the gas to improve mileage? I have all kinds of stories. Some say it works, others don't. Some say they have been doing it for thirty years and get at least a 10% increase and others say it destroyed their engine. Any Chevy truck guys out there have any "REAL" information about this?

Hi, 88 GMC Suburban ("too" High Sierra) used on a daily commute of about 20 miles round trip...350/throttle body FI/auto tranny gets about 13mpg. Just filled the beast up last nite to the tune of $75, ouch. Every time the gallon clicker went off I kept hearing the media telling us the oil companies have more money than they can get rid of and how they have nothing to do with the supply and demand cost increases...right, and I still believe in the easter bunny too. I for one am damned tired of companies paying monster salaries while the consumer foots the bill for new equipment, expansion, etc. Isn't that supposed to come out of your profit margin?? It's called the "cost of doing business"...pardon the rant, just sick of it all...now the local power conglomerate wants to raise power rates while they pay the highest salaries ever recorded within their corporate structure. I got a whole 3 percent increase this year, we're almost "up" to the government poverty level now!! Whoopie.... Kerry.

28 MPG? Your Colorado isn't rated that high. The 4cyl/5spd 2wd is only rated at 26 MPG hwy. Best I've gotten with my 2 wd/4cyl/5spd is 27. I average 24.

When will they offer the 4.3L V6??? I think the GM Engineers should be thinking about that. I wish I had the $$$ (not to mention the know-how); I'd retrofit mine.

I miss that Vortec V6!!

4.3 is gone. Its not used in anything I don't think. The current 4-5-6 cyl inlines use some of the same internal parts (rods, pistons, etc.) so it's cheaper to produce. Had a 1997 Isuzu Hombre (S10) with the Votec 4.3 and my Colorado with a 4 cyl will run right along side with better MPG, but the 5 & 6 are fuel guzzlers I'm told.

I am from Canada so with the help from some conversion tables I am getting around 15 miles per gallon! My daily commute also involves driving over a mountain and average's around 250 miles per week...so it's not cheap but it is the best truck I've owned. The last truck I owned was a 1991 S-10 with a 4cyl and a standard and for the same amount of miles it cost me $5.00 less per tank! You can't even compare the two vehicles. I love my Tahoe.

I bought the 1998 2wd Suburban(196,000 miles) 2 weeks ago.It got 11.3 mpg over the 1st 90.6 miles in pure, city, stoplight to stoplight, short trip driving. Most of this was in extremely short trips-2 miles-so it was having to warm up(run rich) each time. This is surprisingly good mpg for this sort of driving. Our 1000 lighter, smaller 3.5L V-6 motored,5 speed Honda Pilot gets about 12.5-13mpg in the same driving,so 11.3 is pretty decent. My Titan would get about 12 mpg(500lbs lighter, much newer),Tundra got maybe 13 mpg.Prius would get 38-40 mpg in the same driving, Prizm(corolla clone) would get 20 mpg same driving..
I'm pleasantly surprised it did that well.I was ready for 9 mpg.
I'm happy.Controlling for weight, it does as well,lb for lb,as a much more modern,Honda Pilot.Honda makes very FE motors,so that is pretty decent. The Pilot is AWD but it doesn't really seem to effect the mpg much.
Thanks,
Charlie

My GTI gets about 30 in the city, 34 on the highway. If I swap in the TDI 5th gear (.756 I think) That should get me closer to 37-38, cause it would bring my RPM's way down. As it is, 80MPH is 3500 RPM's. Id Like to bring it back down to about 2300.

The Passat gets 16 or so in town, and pushes the 30 mark on the highway.

Both of these are 1.8 Turbos.

I have no idea on the 'burban, as it isn't here yet, but I would assume somewhere between 12-15. My wife will use it to drive back and forth to work, about 1.5 miles each way. And we will use it for hauling stuff and when we go on long vacations. My GTI is the weekender/errand boy. You'd be suprised what will fit in the back of that with the seats down.

They have a mail-in service option. They'll send you a PCM programmed to your specs and then you send your existing PCM back to them. I think there is a sligh core deposit, but it's not much and you get it back when they receive it.

Well I'll be darned!

I finally finished all the testing on my 93 2500 'burban, 7.4, 4L80E, 4x4. All stock with the exception of True duals and a K&N filter.

Towing my 28 ft race trailer, at a tick under 10K, in a combination of Hwy and secondary roads I got 7.8 MPG. (Not fricking bad, considering)

Now I've just taken the family on a road trip from S.W. Florida to Kentucky, then Norwalk Ohio for the Pontiac Nationals. On I-75, with the burban loaded down with 5 people and luggage for 10 days, I got 13.9 MPG running 73 mph over the entire state of Georgia.

I have to say I'm very impressed, and thought it would have been much worse. The temps did climb some (from 170 to 200) going thru the mountains north of Knoxville, but it could maintain speed without extra measures.

I have a fairly decent side by side of my 02 Burb and mt son in laws 03 burb, mine is 2X4 his is 4X4 other then that they are a match both having mid 50"s mileage wise. He gets 12ish in town an upper 16's highway, my 02 get high 15's town and pushing 18 highway. I run 35 miles each way at 70+ he drives about the same.
Now the real puzzler!!! My 97 2X4 GMC Burb with 142,000 gets 15-16 town and really gets very close to 20 highway, I thought the new one would do a tiny bit better the the old one. I think the higher usage is due the newer one being a lot higher and also running larger tires, it is pushing more through the wind. All of the above have 3:73 gears and tow packages, the 97 has done the most towing. It has gone from Long Island to the 1000 Islands 3 times towing my 22 foot power boat, towing at 70 it gets almost 14 so I lose 5 mpg towing. I was going to sell the older Burb but now I am just not sure, may let the new one go.

I have an 07 Silverado Classic 5.3L V8. I installed Flomaster dual exhaust and re-programmed with the Hypertech programmer. I drive 50/50 highway/city and I average 19 MPG. Straight highway driving, I have had 24.3 MPG. Quite exceptional I would say.

I've been looking into the programmers as well. They allow the engine to make use of every drop of fuel, hence the extra mileage and power numbers. I think that having a K&N FIPK system, new program, and exhaust help these trucks inmensely. I am definitely doing all three before next year.

You touch on a good point. Driving style really does make a major impact on your MPG. The same vehicle, all things being equal, one driver might get 20 MPG and other gets 12 MPG, just becuase one takes it easy and another is heavy on the throttle.

I've had my 5.3L w/Active FM 08 Silverado Crew Cab for about a month now, and the first two tanks were horrible about 11.8 with a steady mix of city/hwy, and was really worried but I guess it was just engine break in because I'm over 1000 miles now and the third tank got 16.2 city/hwy. I got 20.8 mpg-much better than I expected.I'll post the return trip in a few days.I doubt that the good mpg was because of favorable winds-usually the return trip gets me 1-1.5 mpg better(done the trip many times, 1st time in the Suburban).
My city mpg is nothing special-I work hard to get 14 mpg-gliding a lot.

Obviously I'm pretty pleased with the mpg.We drive straight thru-sleeping in the vehicle at rest stops-so very big is very good.We have a futon mattress in the back for us-and the dog-to sleep on.TX has great rest stops with lots of activity/trucks/lights and the dog will bark,so it isn't too dangerous to sleep there.A motel would be nicer, but $80 is $80.The back of the Suburban is free.

I'm getting an average of about 17.5 mpg with my 5.3L crew cab with a mix of city and highway driving. Pretty much all of my plans for future mods are geared toward increasing that number. Next will be exhaust, followed by programmer, then possibly a tonneau cover (researching that now to see if it's worth it....has anybody seen noticable increases with a tonneau????), then maybe an aftermarket MAF. Somewhere in there I will probably also replace plugs and plug wires to get some more spark. All of this sounds good, but it's going to take me a WHILE to get it all done. Evidently, all these things cost $$! :money:

I did a test over the last tank of gas, mind you it's been raining so I expected to get at least 10% less fuel mileage because of tire slippage.

My 99 Cavalier got 25.6 MPG over the last 268 miles. Not quite as good as it has been, but as I said it's been raining and I've been driving it more for short trips lately because it gets better mileage than the Trailblazer.

Just got back from Las Vegas on Sunday and I was getting 15.2mpg if my math was right.LOL. Thats alot better that I thought I was going to get. That's better mileage (12mpg)than I was getting on my 5.7 Dodge Hemi1500 4x4 and that had a K&N CAI and Flowmasters??? I'm hoping that once I add everything to this truck my mileage doesn't take a dive.

2007 Silverado 6.0L Crew, 16K in 10 months, 16mpg avg, 14 low, 19 high. Wish the 4 cyl mode would stay engaged just a little longer, seems to have plenty of power. I drive like my grandmother, "Keeper of the Speed". Go ahead, flash your lights at me, were not on the Autobahn, I'm oldish, have great insurance and a 5 star crash rating.

Averaging about ooh, 15.5 with the 65% city driving I do....averaged 17.5-18 on my 4000 mile road trip...but that was with 3 people, and the back absolutely packed full. Not horrible if you ask me for a vehicle of this weight.

Bonneville will average between 28-35 (55-75 mph)
Averages about 23 with mostly city, some highway driving...but that's with a lot of on off highway, so getting up to speed, and only staying there for 5 minutes or so.

Our 2nd fill on the 99 suburban 5.7, mostly city driving was 14.1- not bad. I'm anxious to see how it does on the open road as it seems the rpms are pretty low at highway speeds.

My 78 suburban (454) got about 10, regardless if I was towing or driving highway, and if I took it above 70 it started to drop to 8 and lower.

My 88 corolla commuter is carburrated and gets about 30 in town, 36-40 highway driving. I actually got over 50mpg one trip coming down from 9500ft in the mountains back to Denver over 200 miles.

After I got my exhaust, I got 17.5 average city and highway (a little more highway than city). Then, I tried going no faster than 60 back and forth on my commute to work (about 50 miles round trip) and I got 18.5 on that tank. Now I'm trying just going the speed limit (instead of about 5 over) to see if I get the same. I'll be happy with about 18, then I plan on getting a programmer eventually that I'm sure will help as well!

i have a 2000 silverado w/ a 5.3 vortec
i used to get b/w 12 and 15, 16 on a great day with exhaust, k&n cold air, and shorty headers. after changing to iridium plugs, 8.5 mil wires and recharging the filthy filter (it was completely black from the prev. owner), and switching to penns oil platinum full synthetic, i get low 14's when im really playing alot, and mid 16's when im not. i had to go to michigan to pick up my girlfriends car w/ a 2 wheel dolly and even hauling the car doin 80+ the whole way i got 19 mpg highway. i forgot what it was without the car.

In my 2003 Chev Cavalier (2.2L 5spd) I get anywhere between 28MPG to 39MPG. IF I do straight highway and keep it under 115 KM/H I can get it up to 39MPG. In my 94 Suburban (5.7L) I think it gets between 13-18 MPG. It is hard to tell because I get FREE gas from work and there is no meter telling me how many litres I am putting in. In my 1994 Chev Lumina APV (3.1L, 3spd auto) I get around 18MPMG city and over 23MPG highway. But since I get free fuel I don't really care about my fuel economy anymore!

I just bought a '99 1500 4x4 'Burb and drove it back from Houston. 70-80 mph all the way and got just under 13 mpg and I'm not complaining. The leather seats, premium sound and smooth ride make up for any gas mileage issues, plus the fact it is replacing my C30 dually and I don't even want to know what mpg it's getting.
