I didn't know the Vortec name went back this far:
Vortec is a trademarked name for a line of piston engines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piston_engine) for General Motors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_Corporation) trucks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck). The name first appeared in 1986 on a 4.3 L V6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V6) but is now used on a wide range of different engines. Modern Vortec engines are named for their displacement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_displacement) in cubic centimeters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubic_centimeter).
