What's the best set of tires that you've ever had? Do you always buy the same brand or do you go with what's cheap ... or expensive ... or the latest thing?

The best set of tires I have ever owned are BF Goodrich All-terrain T/A's. I have had 2 sets of All-terrain, and currently running a set of BFG mud terrains on my 87 Blazer and averaged 40-45K miles per set. All sets were 35 inch tall tires.

Best set, I've owned are Kumho AT's. Excellent in snow, and rain, and nice and quiet. Unlike the Wrangler's that came on the burb.

I've always been a big fan of Michelin XTM's

But I seen a set of AT's on another work van and I was impressed with the tread pattern. I asked co-worker today how he like them. He said they were the bomb too. Funny you should mention these tires.

Interesting question. I find it kind of hard to select a single "best" tire. 1) I don't wear tires out fast enough to be able to try them all out and 2) "Best" at what?
My BII came with Good Year Wrangler AT's (old style Good Year has since completely redesigned the tire). Wore well, but weren't very good in snow.
When I replaced the Wranglers, I got an off brand made by Yokohama. Traction was better initially, but they seem to be getting slicker in the rain as they age. They also seem to be wearing a little faster than expected.
Explorer came with an off brand made by Cooper. Infinitely better than the Good Year Wranglers in the snow, lasted to 60+K miles (40K mile rating) of which a good portion the thing wasn't aligned right. In my limited experience, I would call this my "best overall" tire.
When I replaced those tires, I got a set of Dunlop Mud Rovers. Better traction than the all purpose tires that were on there before, but quite a bit louder (not that I care that much how loud they are). I also don't hold out much hope that they will wear near as long as the others. But I bought them for the traction and because they are cheaper than other MT's. These would be my "best" off-road tire I've had.
My Suburban came with Big-O AT's (made by Good Year). They seem to do just fine in the snow. Can't comment on wear, because I don't have any idea how many miles they had on them when I bought the thing. But, after 10k miles I've put on them, they seem to wear pretty good.
That's my limited truck tire experience. Really haven't had a tire that I "hated."

I had goodyear wrangler Rt/S which I couldn't stand. After those I got a set of Cooper Discoverer ST's. These tires were the best in the snow, made it through a whole winter in a 2 wheel drive non-posi truck. They got destroyed over the summer and I needed a new set for this year. This is understandable, snow tires don't run well in the summer.

Had great experience with BFG All Terrains, ProComp All Terrains and a few other off brands. Pep Boy's Futura's did very well also when I ran their 33x12.50's. All those were on 3/4 ton Suburbans, but probably the toughest tire from my personal experience, Super Swamper TSL/SX's. Very good for extreme hard core 4 wheeling. Ran'em on my 'ol full size '78 Bronco for years, have'em on our Lil Samurai now. Their great for off road but not my fav for street use.

For the Plymouth Caravan, I buy the cheapest. For the Suburban it has Goodyear AT/S's on it that were on the burb when I bought it two years ago. My work truck has BFG AT KO's and they have been a great tire. (I don't get to pick which tires go on the Silverado) I will probably put more Goodyear AT's on the front of the burb as they took a beating when I drove back after a tie rod failure offroading. I probably would go with BFG's if I were replacing all 4. I have been hearing good things from other offroaders about the Toyo Open Country MT's, so they are definitely on the list.

Well i had a set on my 2002 Z71 Tahoe that came stock and i do believe they were a failure! A winch would have been a better option. Afterwards i put on a set of BF Goodrich all terrains and never had much of a problem. They rode smoother, quieter, and look better.

I've tried qutie a few different summer, all-season, and A/T tires over the years on various vehicles. I'm always experimenting to see what works best, but normally stick with the ones that have the best rep from my friends who work in the tire industry.
Summer Tire - BFG g-Force T/A KDW 2 or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (If you can afford 'em). :)
All Terrain - BFG A/Ts
All-Season - Michelin LTX M/S

I gotta agree, I replaced my Pro Comp M/T's recently after 4.5 years and 52K miles, they passed state inspection but I knew I was gonna have to replace them soon.
The local 4WPW manager offered me a great deal on a new set and unlike most tire purchases I didnt have think twice whether the deal was good or not. I'm good for another 50K.
I don't know if I could ever get anything other than my Kumho Road Venture M/T KL71. My 2WD Colorado hasn't had any problems in mud or snow dry grip is excellent wet grip is good. I haven't tried them out in the sand yet I'm really curious to see how they are in that element

Can't really pick just ONE tire( as far as a specific model )and call it the best ever because I have chosen tires for different reasons, some tires are no longer made I used to buy that were great, and I expect different things from different tires. I wouldn't expect an all season tire to perform off road they way an all terrain does and I wouldn't ask an all terrain to give me on road performance the way an all season does. So with that said here are my top choices in AT and AS tires for trucks and SUV's as car tires opens a whole new discussion...
Best All Terrain:
1 - Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo
2 - Bridgestone Dueler APT ( Sears only tire )
3 - BF Goodrich All Terrrain TA/KO
Best All Season Tire:
1 - Firestone Destination LE
2 - Michelin LTX M+S
Overall if I had to pick ONE tire that I would take for any condition on a truck or SUV I guess I would pick the Revo as it can handle the off road stuff that an AS tire just can't and on road it is a very civil tire. It was always my choice of tire when I bought them since they came out and I generally replaced any OE tire on my trucks with them by a few thousand miles. Excellent on road ride, incredible tread wear, and the best darn AT in the snow I have ever used( not bad in mud either ). However, they have become very expensive as crude continues to rise and rise and MPG suffers some with such an aggressive tread. The price and MPG loss were never an issue before but these days they are to me so it actually hurts my decision to consider these tires.
I have become more of an all season tire guy now due to the reduced cost associated with them. I have to say the Destination LE's that I tried on the NBS 07 Silverado I just sold really impressed me. Replaced the OE Goodyear AT's with them and they really did amazing even in some really nasty winter weather, they were quiet as all get out, the ride was excellent, they held up great( no wear in just under 9K ), and they boosted my fuel economy 2MPG highway over the Goodyears. They were a good $60 p/tire cheaper in the size I needed than the Revos and I got Revo like performance out of them on road and in the snow. I was extremely happy with them and can't recommend them enough if you do not off road as I do not so an AS tire will work for you.
My new 08 AWD Chevy Equinox came with the Destination LE's and they have performed just as well on the new SUV. We have had some really nasty weather the last week since I bought it and this little AWD SUV plows through anything I try every bit as well as the 4WD trucks I have owned running Revo's. Obviously I wouldn't dream of going off road with it but on road these tires do the job incredibly well. Better even than the Michelin LTX M+S's I have had and that is high praise indeed. To be honest I have yet to feel the AWD kick in and from what I hear you can tell. It is like driving a tank.
So in the past it was the Revo and still would be if $$$ and MPG were not an issue or if I absolutely had to have an AT tire. Otherwise I say the Destination LE.

Well, for my truck, I'm still running the factory tires that come with the Z71 package...GY Wrangler AT/Ses.
Out of 10...lets see
Dry Traction: 9
Dry Cornering: 7
Wet Traction: 5
Wet Cornering: 5
Hydroplaning Resist: 6
Snow: Not Tested, but previous owner said at least auto 4 was absolutely necessary.
Alright, so generally...dry, great, good offroad grip...but wet? hell no.
I am looking for a better tire to replace these in a few months when they wear a bit more. I have a hard time replacing a good tire...
Going with either...
GY Wrangler Silent Armor
Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo
Most likely I'll be going with the Scorpions since I don't do alot of offroading...and don't really experience much snow down here in florida lol. If I was going to take a trip into the snow, I'd just buy some good Bridgestone snows for it. and hit it.
As far as my car goes.
Well...its got 4 brand new GY Assurance TripleTreds on it as of 2 days ago. They seem to live up to their status. Excellent A/S tire, if not the BEST ON THE MARKET. Not a bad price either!

I like the Falken Ziex 512's I have on now, but I might trade over to a Pirelli PZero at the next tire swap. The Falkens have a little short life, but don't scrub or wall roll nearly as much as the stock coopers did on the track.
Oh wait, you mean for trucks! Dunno, I have majic dry rots on my burban now. When it becomes a daily driver, it will get new shoes.

I'm now on my second pair of Toyo Open Country LT315/75R1's. they're basically 35x12.50's and are by far the best tire i've ever had on my trucks. I got 55000 miles out of my first set which was a mix of highway, city, dirt, mud, everything else! They ride beautifully, not to loud but let you know they're there, look great, great traction in dry, wet, and snow/ice conditions.

mine would have to be Interco Trxus MT's. For a 4x4 tire they do not have the growl driving down the road and the are great off road. Plus a nice tire for show also.

Hard to say, so many vehicles, so many sets of tires, some never replaced because I sold the vehicle before the tires were changed or worn out. But 2 of the Camaro's that I owned had BFG Radial TA's on them and I tell you what, they were a fabulous tire, never in snow because these cars were NO SNOW cars, but all other climates, these tires worked great......

My best tires on my S-10 are the BFGoodrich A/T Mud Terrain 28", they are a really nice riding tire with a little road noise, and they have 35,000 on them so far and they have at least 50% tread left on them.
My best tires on the Silverado are the Pro Comp All-Terrain tires, they are excellent on the freeway little bit of road noise. I have never been in snow or mud with them, so I'm not sure about the yucky stuff!
Future tires I want to get for the Silverado to replace the Pro Comps, are the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw 12.50"x35"x17"!

Tire guy by trade here checking in, and making my first post on the board also...
I have no bias when it comes to tires, I let experience and customer feedback (not the feedback generated by online retailers, this you may or may not is generally biased and done internally) dictate my preferences. I work for an independent dealer in the Savannah Georgia area.
For most of the vehicles on this board, I don't believe you can get more bang for the buck than the Nitto Terra Grappler. I have switched numerous people from BFG's to this tire on price alone. As they come back for their rotations (every 3-5k!!), they are nothing shy of impressed with the tire I recommended. From the installer end, the Nitto's mount and balance far better than any of the BFG A/T or M/T product. They are a very attractive tire in either the M/T or A/T with the exception of NO WHITE LETTER!!! That is, as I say exactly to a client looking to purchase this type of tire, the only drawback. I just think a tire like theseshould be OWL or RWL...
As far as your everyday Highway tire... I really think that if guys and gals in general would put some pride to the side, forget a little bit of what Dad taught us, and do things like rotate your tires every oil change and check your air pressure monthly (thus finding irregular wear patterns faster and correcting them faster), and not "once a year' or every 15k miles, many tires on the market would achieve a more deserving rating...
Technology may not have leveled the playing field yet, but it is making it a very tight race for who makes the best tire. I think some of the diamonds in the rough are the names you don't hear about all the time... like Cooper for example. The Discoverer H/T, while a cosmetically boring tire, is a fantastic tire for the money with a strong warranty behind it. They ride great, wear slow, and are fairly decent in wet weather. Remeber here folks, I am in Georgia, I can't speak for snow traction. The only I know about snow is from living in Rochester and Long Island NY till I was 16, and that is all I needed to know!
Car tires... I still think Michelin has that licked. However, you will pay dearly for it. It is hard though to find a better touring or sedan tire than a Michelin. Cooper has the CS4 touring, which you don't hear much about, is available in a stock pile of sizes and ratings, and is a great choice. And no, I don't work for Cooper. I just really really try to buy American when I can!
I'll stop there...
I am a 2008 Michelin Certified Product Expert
2008 Bridgestone/Firestone Certified Tire Professional
and a bunch of other fun things too...
I'd be glad to offer some insight... and from an unbiased viewpoint as well...
Take it easy all,
Ron

I am looking at the Dunlop Radial Mud Rovers, I have seen the reviews and they look good. The overall rating was high and most of all the cost was low. I found through Sam's Club in Kansas, 33x12.50x15 shipped, mounted and balanced for under $168.00 per tire!!! I am on a budget and these seem like they will do the trick, I will update my pic when I get them mounted!

i had a a set of 33x12.50 and a set of 35x12.50 maxxis buckshot mudders on my tacoma and their ability in all conditions were great for me. never got stuck in mud or wrecked for hydroplaning. rarely rotated them if ever so that in consideration they lasted good. put a set of 30x9.50 maxxis buckshot mudders on my frontier i had before i got my silverado and they were great. im pretty sure the kept me from goin into the lake one day because i was lost tryin to get out of a campin area in the middle of a monsoon and the lake right against the passenger side of my truck and woods and banks on directly beside the drivers side and never hit anything or went in the lake and was muddin around for like 45 min. my girlfriend about to crap her pants the whole time but it was a lot fun lol. but they are pretty loud tires but i like that. but not sure if i will go w/ them or some good lookin a/t on my silverado

I do rotate my tire every 5k tho. Im lookin at goin with the Kuhmo Road Venture Mt or the Toyo Open Country ATs. Tryin to talk myself into a mudd terrain but i dont really have a need for one.
