View Full Version : GMTC Needs: More memory
Steve

Before we move to a new web host/server later this year, I need to prep the development computer with more memory.
This is an older 2.2 GHz celeron processor that takes PC2100 (or PC2700/3200) DDR. Right now it's got one 512MB card and one 256MB card .
Does anyone have any spare memory they're willing to donate to the site?
I'm aware that this is a bit of an older computer and I'm wondering if anyone had any extra unused memory that they could part with? I'd like to find two 1GB memory cards to help out this development system. If not, even one 1GB or one 512MB cards would help out.
Maybe there is more than one person with a spare memory card?
Let me know, in exchange I'll give a year of free Platinum sponsorship membership on this site and we'll sing songs about you.

Steve,
I have 1gig (2 sticks of 512mb) PC3200 DDR that I pulled out of my rig when I upgraded to 2 gigs. I will donate if they will work.
I looked it up and this is the exact memory (http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT6464Z40B) I have.

Thanks for the offer. The wife says I spend too much money on this stuff, so I'm glad to see that people will be willing to help out the site.
Also considering Motherboard/CPU.
If anyone has upgraded their Motherboard/CPU (or have an unused computer that is faster than what I have now) let me know. I would also consider adding on a third hard drive that I could just use for backups to the database, which is getting pretty big and they can take up a lot of room.

This computer currently has the following setup:
CPU:CPU, CEL-2.2G/128K/F400,mPGA478,SL6RW -- This could be faster to help speed up development
Video: 64MB video card - could be better, anyone have something lesser just lying around? Like a ATI RADEON 9250SE or so.

I had a couple of messages about old processors. Basicly, this computer can take a Pentium 4 socket 478 CPU at a Front Side Bus speed of 400. If anyone has an unused CPU with that it in, let me know. It can't be a 533 or 800 FSB, has to be 400.
Thanks.

OK, you are way above my head talking about this junk. I have a computer or two that no longer work and you are welcome to anything in them, but I have no idea what's there. I will look when I get to work tomorrow to give you some info, but if it is something you can use, you can have it. I know there is memory there, but I have no clue as to what it is. Maybe a big block, maybe a small block or maybe a straight six... that I will understand.

Unfortunately, that video card is too good for this system's motherboard. I can't plugin AGP, only PCI.
Thanks for the offer on that though.

I wish I could just stack them up and keep adding them to the system, but there are only two slots and I'm going to take Darcy's old 512MB cards. Thanks for the offer though. :great:

My motherboard is just at the point where you can't get any new stuff for it. It's a Socket 478 motherboard that can handle Celeron 400 MHz FSB processors or Pentium 4 processors at 400 MHz FSB.
Moving from a Celeron to a Pentium 4 will be a BIG boost.
BTW, I just found a way to overclock this Celeron from x8 to x22, so in theory it's running 4 times faster, and it looks like it's working. LOL, I've had this computer for 4 years and I could have been doing that all along.

Thanks to Dwill3015 we've now got 1GB of ram in this old beast. When I overclocked it, it's running faster. But when I put these two sticks of 512MB ram in, it's running 10x faster than before!
Thanks again!
BTW, I'm bidding on a new Pentium 4 2.6 GHz 400 processor on eBay, so no one outbid me!

And thanks to my back-bacon eating northern friend, we'll have a hard drive that can serve as the final resting spot for a rotation of backups that we'll make from the new server. Right now I can only keep a few becuase the backups can total 100MB and if you want to keep one from every other day, well that's 1.5 GB per month. It adds up, believe me.
Thanks for everyone who's pitching in.

Haven't gotten around to putting the drive in yet. I'm hoping to do that either tonight or over the weekend sometime. The problem is I have three drives ... have to copy the data from one to another and I want this new drive to be the master ... so will have to copy it all over I guess and run the 40 GB as a slave.

Does anyone know of a good disk-to-disk imager or copy tool? I downloaded a free 15-day trial of Norton Ghost ... guess what, you can do everything but actually use the software to copy or make a backup! ARGH.
I simply want to copy the contents from the current 40 GB drive (including windows) onto the new 80 GB drive and then plug in the old 30GB drive and I can simply manually copy all of the files from that one onto the 80 GB, then i'll plug in the 40 GB again to run as drive D: and I'll format that while I'm at it.
Anyone got any a good suggestion on this?

I must have missed this thread while I was out on vaca.
What's the current status of Franken-server? What's needed?
I have a 2.8Ghz Celeron, and a 2.93ghz Celeron D. I think the celeron D exceeds your FSB requirements (pretty sure it runs at 533mhz), but the 2.8 doesn't. Both are 478 pin. I already donated my memory over to my wife's computer. I think I have a 128mb PCI video card. I'll have to look.

If that drive Jamie sent you is a Seagate, you might check Seagate support pages for their disk manager software that's bundled with their new hard drives. I actually have a full copy of ghost, and was not impressed when I found out I would be stuck with two partitions.
The only problem with software like ghost is that it copies the partition info also. I have a 230gb hd that was upgraded from a 20gb. Now on the 230gb, I now have 2 partitions, one is 20gb, and the other is 210gb.

This is the first time I've ever moved the whole contents from one drive to another drive. I need it to copy everything so that it's bootable when I make th 80 GB the master drive.

what davandy said...I don't know about the older versions of ghost, but the pas couple will allow you to expand the partition size to the size of the new drive. Similarly, if you are moving to a smaller drive for some reason, but the actual amount of data will fit on the smaller drive, it'll sink the partition. A goog non-destructive partion management app is Partition Magic. All I can say is it's just short of magic what it can do. You can create, delete, resize, split, merge, and a buttload of other things..

Yeah, it looks like it will just plugin directly. Your computer can take 1 GB (1024MB) of total memory, you're at 25% of your max at 256MB. If I send you this memory, you'll be now at 512MB (2 x 256MB) so that's 50% of your maximum.
PM me your address.
