I'm rolling stock, but I'm curious how many members on here have put an aftermarket head unit in their truck or suv? If you have, describe what you installed and snap a pic if you would.

I have a panasonic head unit in my sierra. nothing special my uncle was getting rid of his old Z71 and said I could take it.

By the way steve, I was in Cape Cod this passed week and a trailblazer passed me with dual exhaust. Have you ever heard of or seen this before? I know it was a first time for me. Sorry to get off topic.

in my suburban I'm running a cheap audiovox rampage head unit with a 10 disc changer. It's a POS, but the radio came in my very first car (ford contour). The changer came from my best friend, and it just happened to be an audiovox too so it interfaces with the radio. I'm planning on replacing my existing radio with a pioneer video head after I install a sub and build a custom center console.

i have to upload my truck on there lol

Its an 07 Silverado classic reg cab 8' long box. only because i had to settle for reg cab for the 8' long bed for work, i coulda got extended short bed for the same price base model, but then i wouldnt have had the features/8' bed. and the deal i got was somethign you just dont let slip away.

I see you have a crew cab, my fav set up for a crew cab is the entire box under the seat. Ive done some work myself on a crew cab, I used 3/4 mdf, cut out the tranny hump, lined it with the same leather on the bottom of the seat, and just like someone else on here she got someone to etch in GMC on some 1/2 " plexy cut out a hole and mounted it there. Hooked up a couple leds in there with a controller so she can choose steady light or with the beat sorta thing, Then she bought 2 12's and we put those facing up. and for her 2 amps, and component controllers, i made an exact inset on the top of the box where they were being lined up so there is abolutely no visible wiring.

I have a Pioneer DEH-P4900iB head unit with bluetooth, iPod control, Serious satellite radio, and a remote control. It was an easy install. I had to get a harness from Scosche Part #GM2000 to keep my chimes and retained accessory power. Also, there is no switched +12V power unless you get the scosche harness or one of the more expensive ones. I am still using stock speakers right now, but plan to upgrade later. I also have a 760 watt Pioneer amp pushing one Sony Xplod 10" subwoofer in a sealed box. here's a pic of the stereo:

I am planning on upgrading the head unit in my Suburban. Don't know if I'll put in my pre-out only Kenwood or save it and get another. I have mostly used Alpine but there is a pioneer on sale at work.

If I were you, I would only spend the money on upgrading your deck IF you; don't have a cd player, want iPod connection, have sub woofers, or for blue tooth. I have a Sony deck, and it is great. If you still want to upgrade, I recommend a Kenwood, or Alpine. Sony is good, but those other two are fancier.

I replaced my stock unit with a JVC so I could connect my IPOD and XM. I had to by a special wiring harness from Walmart that included a chime box because GM runs all the warning chimes for your seat belts and lights through the stock stereo. I found the same harness at Crutchfields but it was $80. I only paid $35 at walmart. I just clicked the harnes to the factory inputs and then connected all the wires to my new JVC unit. I also had to buy a DIN dash kit because the hole left by my old stereo is twice the size of anything else. Overall it was an easy install and I can now control my IPOD through my JVC with the remote. Best thing I have done to it so far. My Truck is an 04 1500 Z71.

Hola ~

How did this retrofit go for you? Were you able to interface the Sirius receiver and antenna to the factory XM ready head-unit?

I just purchased a used 2006 K2500 HD with factory XM ready Radio. I have not gotten so energetic as to disassemble the dashboard yet, but I am hoping I can use my previous Sirius satellite receiver with this stock radio.

Do you know if it is possible to utilize the roof-mounted XM antenna with this arrangement? I think that location is a little more solid and would have better reception than mounting the Sirius antenna on or behind the dashboard.

Gracias ~

I added a Kenwood KDC-1028. Dont mind the panel under the steering column being missing, I put it in after I took the picture. This was also my first headunit install.

I figure this would be the best place to post this, I recently just purchased a 1997 Full Size to replace my 90 with the 90 when you removed the stock head unit and placed the aftermarket in the cassette hole you had two options leave the old radio in or have a hole in the dash but I saw on ebay a pocket that would go in the stock radio location. Does anyone know if there is a blank or a pocket for the 1997 trucks because I have an aftermarket unit in the new truck but the stock cd player is still in it and I would like to get rid of it.

Thanks
Leland

I just put my Alpine in my 99 Suburban and I have the same problem with the aux cd player. I've seen trucks with the pockets on cardomian.com. I asked at the audio shop when I got my dash kit and they said I might be able to get a pocket from a Chevy dealer. I'm gonna check it out today and let you know. For the thread, in my Suburban, Alpine head unit and stock speakers (suck) and in my wifes 03' Trailblazer Sony head unit, stock speakers and a1000 watt Rockford Fosgate amp and two 12" Polk audio subs

Thanks, I went to Wally World a couple days ago and was looking at the head units and the install kit shows a pocket on the vehicle they used for the picture i was hoping it would have had one in the kit but it didn't. Once I get some other work done to the truck I will probably be replacing my head unit it in there with a Sony, I am not a real big fan of the Pioneer that is in there right now.

I like what you did with the changer controls but I will be installing a Sony head unit with a Ipod conncetor, I found a place that had the pocket though, www.ckresto.com (http://www.ckresto.com) also is there anyone interested in the stock cd player and the pioneer head unit. I do not know if the stock cd player works. I figured I would check on here first before I put it on ebay.

Here is what is sitting in the garage waiting to go in.

Kenwood DPX-502 Head Unit w/bluetooth

2 x 12" Pioneer shallow mount subs. (1400 Watts MAX Each - model # TS-SW1241D)
1 x Kenwood 1000 MAX Watt Mono sub - can't remember the model number
Sub Enclosure is custom built to fit under the rear seat of the extended cab trucks. (built myself)
1 x Tsunami 5 Farad Cap ( so the lights don't dim when I'm cranking the music. )

Factory Speakers are already replaced with JBL's

I tried finding a sub box to fit, but no one has anything for 12" subs that I could find.

whats the rms on your three subs?
i have two MA Audio 15's that are hittin 4,000 RMS watts a peice. not max, but rms, its loud as hell. so loud i can't turn it all the way up without gettin ear damage. but they sound good as hell. however, if i ever get rid of them, id get two smaller subs, cause they would sound a little clearer.

Here are some pics of my Alpine CDA-9856, Ipod hook-up, 12" JL W6 (Love it!!!), 760 Watt MTX amp, 1 farad capacitor, and 4 gauge power wire. Altogether it hit 157 dB's. They said a shot gun blast from 3 feet away was the equivalent of 120dB's!

Factory head died and it was cheaper to install a new aftermarket system (Pioneer) than repair the OE unit. Used dash adapter (Metra 99-3000) to install new head where OE Cassette/Equalizer had been. Have a storage pocket (Metra 88-00-3301) in dash in place of old HU, soon to be a gauge cluster.

That's insane, I'm not looking to loose my ability to hear, just would like it to sound good that's all.

Specs are as follows on mine:

SPECIFICATIONS

Max Music Power : 1400W
Nominal Power : 350W
Speaker Size : 12" dia.
Impedance : 4 ohm
Sensitivity : 88 dB
Frequency Response : 18 - 1,000 Hz
Recommended Enclosure : 0.5 ~ 1.0 cu.ft.
Dimensions : 13" dia. x 3-7/8"
Mounting Depth : 3-1/4"
Cutout Hole : 7-3/8" dia.

I bought them because of the mounting depth. I custom made a box. It, along with the subs, amp, and Capasitor, all fit under the rear seat, without cutting into leg room, or forcing me to relocate anything.

Thats what I'm talkin bout! Eclipse may produce some of the best sounding head units on the market.
Im running an Eclipse cd7100 with the iPod adaptor and the Sirius tuner. Thinking bout gettin the navi and the blurtooth for it. Also got a Power Acoustik 100 watt amp hooked up to some 12 in Kenwoods.

A lil toned down from my last system, but you gotta grow up some time. Will post some pics this Saturday.
