Yah I guess @Sierraowner5.3 is right a Deuce and a half, GMC CCKW, or a modern 6x6 military truck would be winners, all three as almost indestructible in terms of the power-train, they run on almost anything that burns, and they can carry lots of supplies. Also their low tech electrical system and non existent engine computer and ignitions systems make them immune to EMPs. As long as you can get it to crank it will go.
Keeping it going due to craptastic fuel econ is the problem. It might burn almost anything ... but you need a LOT of whatever you burn ... and you'll ALWAYS need a lot of it with such a vehicle. That's more stops. More chances for the zombies to get you.

It all matters what your survival plan is. If its stay in one fortified place and bring in supplies then a larger vehicle works if its keep moving then small and efficient because you wont need to move as much stuff and youll be able to look for resources In a hunker down method you have as many essentials as possible and if you need more you need a way to move a lot of them quickly and easily. Which a 6x6 can do as can a large pick-up or flat bed, but the 6x6 also has the ability to go anywhere it need with its high ground clearance and big tires.
My zombie bugout machine choice would be a crew cab Unimog long wheel base u2450 turbo multi fuel engine with rear commo/camper box. While Im dreaming I may as well ask for the optional portable machine shop trailer designed for the Australian army and an optional loader bucket on the front.
The trucks designed for the UAE Royal guards were fully self contained with 3 on board water tanks grey black and fresh full cooking facilities showers toilets and bunks to sleep upto six at a time. Long range fuel tanks for 1400 miles of driving.
I figure with one of those as the center of my merry band and some more flexible scout vehicles I would have a vehicle that could not only be used for transport but also for construction of fortifications and also a temporary portable home.
All you army guys with the long range transport vehicle hook-ups' don't forget about your buddy down in mansfield.
I've got a good amount of survival gear, just light on water mostly ... and a map of the various national guard depots.
I am curious how many people are answering with vehicles they either own or currently have the personal means to purchase, tomorrow ... at a location neaby that stocks whatever's being suggested?
I'm asking because it's unclear to me if people have been giving realistic or pie-in-the-sky answers.
For clarification on my own answer, it was realistic and easily within my means. How about the rest of you?
My original answer is realistic because its the real family play if anything major happens. The CCKW or Deuce is very unrealistic for me, but I would love to have one they are great vehicles. Best would be a CCKW with a GM crate engine because of its under powered 6cyl.

I drive a few blocks out of my way about once a week to check them out. A Mog camper is my dream vehicle. It just happens that this group of Mogs is to high priced and out of my range. BTW the place I would borrow them from is a Mog resale and parts shop. So I might do a little parts shopping on my way out the door.
Don't forget, this is a theoretical ZOMBIE apocalypse event, so according to all of the documentaries that I've seen on the subject (Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Zombieland, The Walking Dead, etc) ... we're talking about mass chaos with large portions of the population being wiped out in just a few weeks time, so in many cases we're talking about just being able to take pick of your vehicle of choice just as long as you can find the keys and it's all fueled up (and zombie free - always check the back seat!).
That's where my thinking that being able to find a smaller diesel tanker truck would be a major win. From what I understand from chemical engineers that I've talked with, gasoline that's on the market today doesn't last more than about six months before it starts to "get fouled" and breaks down into phases, where Diesel fuel will last a little bit longer when it's untreated, but it can last for decades if it is treated properly and provided that it gets stirred on a regular basis and there may need to be some chemical treatment done from time to time. Just have to keep it warm, and in a big tanker that might be a problem, but I suppose that it could be kept inside of a heated garage or something like that.
Plus, if there were a 90+% wipeout of the population, I assume there could be some type of regression to things like solar power for heating water, wind power, animal power, and of course human power like hand saws, hammers instead of pneumatic guns, etc.
However, this thread is about the perfect vehicle (as we are on an automotive website afterall).
Yup, I know the intent of the thread ... but I was trying to get a feel for how people were actually answering, as some people do have 6x6's. :)
