Oil Consumption Issue
Hey all, I don't know why I haven't posted about this sooner, but I guess I've just been too into researching my mods. So a couple of months before I left in February, I noticed my truck was starting to get low on oil rather quickly. I didn't find a leak anywhere, but my pressure kept getting really low and I'd have to add it in. Shortly after I left to come over here, in Feb, the check engine light came on and my wife took the truck in to the dealership. They said it looked like the oil hadn't been changed in forever, but when checking their records saw that I'd had them change the oil in January, so the immediately ruled out negligence. (This is the sole reason I get maintenance at the dealership while it's still under warranty rather than doing it myself.) So they said they had to do oil consumption tests and told her to bring it back every 1000 miles. Well, she took it back in late march but they couldn't find the paperwork so they said they had to start it over. They did check the level though and it was down 2.5 quarts from where it was in Feb so they added some oil and told her to come back in 1000 miles again. The fact the paperwork was not found is frustrating but is also the first time I've had an issue with that service department, so I won't be too harsh on that. Anyway, they're going through all the tests so that if something needs to be replaced they can ensure it's covered by the warranty, so that's good at least.
However, I've gotten no information regarding what might actually be going on. Nor have I gotten any information on what damage might be going on with this and which parts might need to be replaced. Needless to say I'm a bit concerned. My father-in-law, who's always skeptical of anyone, said they're just hoping to extend the life until the warranty runs out so they don't have to replace the engine. I'm not so concerned with that since there's about 2+ years and 50,000 miles left on the warranty.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I'm at a loss and just hoping whatever it is isn't going to have long term negative effects and gets fixed appropriately.

Does your engine smoke from the exhaust and have a funky smell to it?? (dont go huffing huge plumes of exhaust gases obviously lmfao)
No. I've noticed no odd smells and no smoke. Granted, I haven't driven it in two months, but like I said it started before that, and basically, it'd be just fine and then suddenly I'd put some gas into it and the check engine light would come on and the DIC would say something to the effect of "Oil pressure low ZOMGWTF Turn engine off now!!" I believe that's a direct quote from the DIC.

Subject: Engine Oil Consumption on Aluminum Block Engines with Active Fuel Management (AFM) (Install AFM Oil Deflector and Clean Carbon from Cylinder)

2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe
2007-2009 GMC Sierra 1500, Sierra Denali, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Yukon Denali XL
2008-2009 Pontiac G8 GT
Equipped with Aluminum Block V8 Engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) (RPOs LC9, LH6, L76, LFA, L92)

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2009 model year and new Correction information for the 2009 model year - left rocker arm cover replacement. Information has also been added after step 9. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 10-06-01-008A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
Some customers may comment about engine oil consumption of vehicles with higher mileage (approximately 48,000 to 64,000 km (30,000 to 40,000 mi). Verify that the induction system is assembled correctly and that there is no evidence that the engine has been ingesting dirty air due to a mis-assembled induction system. Also verify that the PCV system is functioning properly. If diagnostic procedures indicate that oil consumption is piston/piston ring related, verify that oil consumption is less than 3,000 km (2,000 mi) per liter/quart. If these conditions are met and oil consumption is less than 3,000 km (2,000 mi) per liter/quart, perform the service indicated in this bulletin.
This condition may be caused by oil spray that is discharged from the AFM pressure relief valve within the crankcase. Under most driving conditions and drive cycles, the discharged oil does not cause a problem. Under certain drive cycles (extended high engine speed operation), in combination with parts at the high end of their tolerance specification, the oil spray quantity may be more than usual, resulting in excessive deposit formation in the piston ring grooves, causing increased oil consumption.
2009 Vehicles Only
Important: This left rocker arm cover is NOT to be used on 2007-2008 vehicles because of the calibration of the PCV orifice being different in 2007-2008.
A new left rocker arm cover has been released for 2009 engines. Technicians should replace the left rocker arm cover with GM P/N 12642655. This rocker arm cover has relocated PCV drain holes that prevents PCV pullover into the intake manifold. Refer to SI for Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Left Side.
2008-2007 Vehicles Only
To correct this condition, perform the piston cleaning procedure as described in this document, and install a shield over the AFM pressure relief valve per the procedure outlined in this document. Monitor oil consumption after this repair to ensure oil consumption has improved to acceptable levels. If this repair does not correct the condition, it may be necessary to replace the piston assemblies (piston and rings) with new parts.
Important: It is critical in this cleaning process that the engine/fuel injector cleaner remain in the cylinders for a minimum of 2.5 hours to fully clean the components. The cleaner solution must be removed before a maximum of three hours.
•Verify the oil consumption concern following Corporate Bulletin Number 01-06-01-011F. If oil consumption is found, continue on with this bulletin.
•Remove the spark plugs and ensure that none of the pistons are at top dead center (TDC).
•Clean the pistons by putting 118-147 ml (4-5 oz) of Upper Engine and Fuel Injector Cleaner, GM P/N 88861802 (in Canada, use 88861804), in each cylinder. Allow the material to soak for at least 2.5-3.0 hours, but no more than three hours and then remove the cleaner. A suggested method of removing the cleaner is cranking engine over. Make sure to unplug the ignition coils and fuel injector before cranking the engine over. Also make sure that the painted surfaces are covered so no damage is done.
•Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement in SI.
•Remove the AFM valve (1).
•Install the new shield (1), GM P/N 12639759, and tighten the AFM valve to the oil pan to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).
Important: Ensure that the engine cleaner is thoroughly removed before reinstalling the spark plugs. Failure to do so may result in a hydro-lock condition.
•Reinstall the spark plugs. Replace the spark plugs if necessary due to full of carbon. Refer to the parts catalog.
•Reinstall the oil pan. Refer to the Oil Pan Installation procedure in SI. Replace the oil pan gasket if necessary. Refer to the parts catalog. Replace the engine oil if necessary.
•Re-evaluate the oil consumption. Document on the repair order. If the oil consumption is still greater than 0.946 L (1 qt) in 3,200 km (2000 mi), replacement of the pistons and rings will be required.
Important: Some minor scratches may be noticed on the cylinder walls during piston and ring replacement. If the scratch cannot be felt when running your finger nail over it, the scratch is considered normal wear and the block or engine should not be replaced.

Cool you found that.. I was actually going to say that I could ask Billy (buddy, GM tech) to check for TSBs on the issue and see if it was a mass problem. Looks like maybe you found the reasoning. :great:
Yeah, but now it looks like it could be anything from a replacement part to a new engine. Awesome. That'll be fun. Hey, if they replace the engine, does that reset the odometer? lol
A friend in Ga had his motor All rebuilt on a 07 5.3 Avalanche.. with 50K on it..There has been a few people talking about this.. Nice TSB..
Thanks for suggesting I look up the TSB. And there it was. And yeah, as the TSB says, it effects 07, 08 and 09s, though it seems the part numbers are different on the 09s. Honestly, my biggest concern is just having it fixed and happen again 3 years from now when I'm out of warranty. How's your friend's avalanche doing? The interesting thing is that my engine's almost at 50k right now as well.
Man, Glad I came on here. I was looking for the TSB and found it. Are there anymore TSB associated with this as I need to be well informed for what I am about to go through.
My story. Standard "Low oil pressure, turn of engine." However when I went to check the oil there was not a drop on the dipstick. I put in at least 3 qts of oil. No kidding. So I take it in and they are starting the "oil consumption test." This dealers service manager actually told me that it is normal for this engine to burn 1 qt of oil for the first 3000 miles. Thereafter 1 qt of oil for each additional 1000 miles. So I tell him, "Are you telling me if I go by the manufacturers oil change recommendation that I would have 1 qt oil oil remaining if I did not add any oil." Makes no sense why someone would think anybody would buy such a line. So my oil change went to closing time on Saturday and I had to pay over the phone for my oil change in order for them to transfer the paperwork to the new car sales desk so I can pick it up after service hours. I get my keys, pop the hood and check the oil where THEY parked it on level ground. It was about an inch over serviced. Have a great picture of the dipstick for proof. What do you think would happen when I take my vehicle in at 1000 miles? You guessed no defect. I was livid. I sure hope it was a mistake, but I can not get over the service managers comments and not being able to check it while they were open. Sounds really shady to me. Is anyone having any early catalytic problems or O2 sensors needing early replacement. I am at 65000 miles and have never experienced oil consumption like this. Never once was I told I was low. My 60 Willys burned less oil in it's stock Fhead 134.

Based upon the "Information on engine oil consumption guidelines Bulletin 01-06-01-011G" it adds all 2012 and below vehicles. I hope they are not expecting the worse.
