Also AM and FM are vertically polarized.
Going to horizontal causes a big loss of signal plus makes it directional.

I have repaired several wiper boards that only work when they want to.
Every time it was cracked solder joints on the PCB.
Always at the connector to the wire harness.
If you can solder try there...
I have hauled my Honda around. Mine will fit diagonally in the bed.
If you can't haul it that way I'd make sure my gate cables were in very good shape.
