    Default 92 2500 7.4L won't start

(NOOB TO THIS FORUM) I am about to buy my friend's 1992 chevy 2500 4x4 with 7.4L he has owned it for 18 years with NO problems, anyway it sat for a year no start just because he didn't need to use the truck and when he started it, all was good, drove down the freeway to local emissions test center. where the service engine soon light came on then idled bad. next day started the truck let it idle for about a min. then it shut off like the key was turnned off. he went to restart but it wouldn't, cranks but no start. he noticed the service engine soon light now will not turn on at all and no start water temp gauge peggs it's self to hot side then back down. all other gauges seem to be working. could there be a bad fuse? none of the fuses in the cab fuse panel are blown. bad ecu? what to look for? ALSO AS A SIDE NOTE. Wiring is all stock and in good shape with no splices. it does have an after market stereo installed about about ten years ago.and engine is all stock and has 130k
    thank you for any ideas

I'm sorry to hear about those issues. It sounds like there may be a ground issue. A bad ground could cause intermittent operation to certain engine control modules and could cause the temp gauge to go whacky because the temp sender outputs its signal in terms of a resistance to ground. I'd go through the engine compartment and check, clean, and make sure all the engine grounds are tight.

Interesting that it was the computer. Typically, the computers are the most reliable part of an engine.
