Thread: Truck Classifications?

I have always understood that a 1500(150),2500(250),and 3500(350) where "light duty" trucks...... 4500(450),5500(550),6500(650),etc where "medium duty" and then you have the big stuff (moving trucks, 18 wheelers, etc).
I am going by the "general information" at this link, I am sure there are variations from this:
The Class 1 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranges from 0 to 6,000 pounds (0 to 2,722 kg). Examples of trucks in this class include the Toyota Tacoma, Dodge Dakota and GMC Canyon.
The Class 2 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranges from 6,001 to 10,000 pounds (2,722 to 4,536 kg). Examples of vehicles in this class include the Dodge Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150. Class 2 is subdivided into Class 2a and Class 2b, with class 2a being 6,001 to 8,500 pounds (2,722 to 3,856 kg) pounds, and class 2b being 8,501 to 10,000 pounds (3,856 to 4,536 kg)pounds. Class 2a is commonly referred to as a light duty truck, with class 2b being the lowest heavy-duty class, also called the light heavy-duty class. 
The Class 3 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranges from 10,001 to 14,000 pounds (4,536 to 6,350 kg). Examples of vehicles in this class include the Dodge Ram 3500, Ford F-350 and the GMC Sierra 3500, both dual rear wheel and single rear wheel. The Hummer H1 is another example of a single rear wheel Class 3 truck, with a GVWR of 10,300 lbs.
The Class 4 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranges from 14,001 to 16,000 pounds (6,351 to 7,257 kg). Examples of vehicles in this class include select Ford F-450 trucks, Dodge Ram 4500, and the GMC 4500.
The Class 5 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranges from 16,001 to 19,500 pounds (7,258 to 8,845 kg). Examples of trucks in this class include the International TerraStar, GMC 5500. Dodge Ram 5500, and the Ford F-550
The Class 6 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranges from 19,501 to 26,000 pounds (8,846 to 11,793 kg). Examples of trucks in this class include the International Durastar, GMC Topkick C6500. and the Ford F-650
Vehicles in Class 7 and above require a Class B license to operate in the United States. These include GMC C7500  Their GVWR ranges from 26,001 to 33,000 pounds (11,794 to 14,969 kg).
The Class 8 truck gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is anything above 33,000 pounds (14,969 kg). These include all tractor trailer trucks.
So when I am shopping around (window or otherwise) what is "HD" or "Super Duty" suppose to mean? I mean they are still by definition a class 1,2, or 3 "Light Duty" truck.
Specifically what I mean is a "2500 HD, 3500HD, F250 Super Duty, F350 Super Duty". Is this some marketing ploy to make us pay more in taxes and insurance than if it was just a plain "2500, 3500, F250, F350"? or is it a ploy so the dealer has some stupid reason to charge the consumer more for a truck that really is no different than any other class 1,2,or 3 truck?
And then on to the medium duty trucks.......
Why does the Dodge 4500/5500 really look like a "truck" but the chevy and ford 4500(450)/5500(550) look like buffalo's?

The F-450 used to look like a longer wheel base F-350. HD is added because they are the heaviest duty truck sold as non commercial trucks. Also they are bigger and tougher then their other light duty counter parts. Think about the 1500HD for the NBS trucks it was a tougher and stronger truck than reg 1500's.

I tend to believe the 1500HD was a 2500HD with 1500HD name plates and marked up another 20% because people were oooohhhhhhed and ahhhhhhed by a 1500 (HD)
You could get a similarly equipped 2500HD for the same or less money than a 1500HD last time I checked before they were discountinued.....

It was a 2500 with a 1500 frame. Kinda sad if your think about it and it was a class 2 truck like normal 1500's just had better towing.

Yup. It was also expensive enough that it made more sense to buy a 2500. They didn't do 1500HD's for terribly long...
