Default Still on the hunt...looked at this one today.

Still looking for a mid 90's GMC Suburban. Went to look at this one today:

    1994 K2500
    7.4L
109,000 kms on the clock ( around 68,000 miles)

Seems ok, took it for a quick drive around the block, I think it might need some new brake pads. Didn't really have it running for long enough to test the AC. THe engine ticked over quite nicely, revved up well, started / stopped with no noise. Next step is to get the owner to sell it for a reasonable price! I'm hoping he will let it go for around 20,000 Saudi Riyals (SR). Around $5,300. Expensive compared to what they would go for in the US, but here in Saudi, they are much sought after and with the petrol prices being so low - fuel economy just isn't an issue.

It looks nice and clean. That is low mileage for a 1994. I would crawl under it and look for oil leaks, engine, transfer case, trans, differentials. I think I remember you saying that repair labor is cheap there also. I suggest that you take it to a Mechanic and have them look it over before you buy it. In the US they charge between $25-$50 to do this. The mechanics may find something that you overlooked. At a minimum they should check front and rear differential fluid condition, t-case fluid condition, u-joint condition, Check the charging system, and look for leaks. If they do find something minor wrong it may give you some negotiating power or at least let you know that you may need to address an issue immediately after purchase. This is of course if you can get the owner to a good price.

It looks like it's in great shape and as Pikey mentioned, low miles given its year. If mechanically sound and everything works, I also think the price is pretty good. I looked in my area on Craiglist and found only one that was for sale. It listed for $2750; however is has 222,000 miles on it, the body/paint are in bad shape, and the interior is cloth and looks worn. If you want to check it out, here is the link.

nice lookin ride, i dont see a lick of rust but bein over in the sandbox i cant imagine you would, but like pikey has said, fluid conditions, gaskets and hoses should be checked over well as they tend to go faster where higher temperature is prevalent

Thanks for the replies chaps, much appreciated.

If I can get it for a decent price, I would take it to a local garage for a pre purchase inspection. These can be done for around $50, and will give a computerised engine compression test, as well as a pretty through inspection underneath the truck. THe owner did say that the power steering fluid sometimes drops to a low level, so hope it might just a simple piece of hose to be replaced / repaired.

Body work looked remarkably good. Correct, there will be no rust if its a Saudi car - maybe if its been imported from the US - but this is a Gulf Spec truck, so no rust. Couple of minor scuffs and dents as one would expect for a truck of this age. Interior looks pretty decent, if a little dusty, but a good clean should sort that out. Leather looks good, no rips/ tears. Again, a good leather cleaner will have looking like new.

THe guy who I went with, Saudi chap I work with, said it was in far better condition than he thought it would be. The owner selling it, give an indication he was after around 24,000 - 30,000 SR ( $6399 - $7999 ) . Personally, I think that's too much even for Saudi prices. Yes, it's in good nick, low mileage, but at the end of the day, it is still a 1994 model.

Stupidly cheap. I filled up the Chevy Trailblazer yesterday on the way back from looking at the Suburban,( with 95 RON ) it cost me 48 SR. Around $12.80. I reckon in the UK that would have cost at least Ł105 ( around $168 ) .

Well, is a no go on that one. I offered the guy 19,000 SR ( $5000), a couple of days later he rang me back saying he had been offered 28,000 SR ( $7,500 ) which I think is way too high for a truck of that age. I know they are popular , and hold their value, but it's just way over priced.

I have now got in touch with a guy who works at the same school as my wife. Apparently he knows a local car dealer who reckons he can get me a decent one within my budget. Will keep on looking !
