I have to agree with you crawdaddy. Sony is making some pretty good stuff these days and everyone I know has nothing but good things to say about JL audio. For everyone that wants good sounds I would recommend those brands for the price/quality ratio.

There are three stages to car audio (4 if you include stock). There is aftermarket good quality stuff, which is what most people buy since you can get good stuff for a reasonable price.

Then there is the serious high quality/ high powered stuff, which is a bit more expensive, even better sound quality and clarity, and obnoxiously loud, which is what i have and like. HA HA

Then there is competition quality which cost a small fortune, is louder than any ear should hear and no normal person would be able to tell it's capabilities because their ears would explode if they sat in the car and played it loud enough to judge it properly. <---may be a mild exaggeration.

I'm not trying to sell anyone on Kicker. It is just what I have and currently like. I'm sure if a higher powered, higher quality sub could fit under my seat then I would probably go buy those.

Good brands for speakers: Kenwood, Sony Xplode, Infinity (kappa series or better), Pioneer (premier series or better), and Rockford Fosgate
More serious stuff would be: MB Quart, Focal, Boston Acoustic

For subs you cant go wrong with Sony Xplodes, JL W6's or 3's, Rockford Fosgate, or Kicker.

Amps: Kicker, Pioneer, Sony Xplode, Kenwood, AUDISON, Phoenix Gold and Orion I know are good amps for sure, Although most of those are expensive for most...

FYI: Generally a company that makes evey component (i.e., head units, midrange speakers, subs and amps) doesnt make every component the best. They make GOOD GOOD stuff, just not the best for obvious reasons.
