Assault Rifle Ban in NY
Kind of curiuos if anyone has an opinion on the assault rifle ban just passed by lawmakers in NY. I own an assault rifle that I purchased from an individual about 4 years ago. Now the new law requires me to register it with the government. I can not sell the gun now unless a background check is done on who im selling it to. Also the new law requires me to recertify my pistol permit every 5 years. I guess I dont care about the pistol permit but to make me an instant criminal with my assault rifle is just wrong. Regardless if they give me a certain amount of time to register the AR I still feel that my rights are being violated. I agree with some of the law regarding the mental health backround check items but a lot of this law, from what I am hearing, was pushed through in the dark. Meaning that most of the votes on the law was not given time to even look it over. Normally there is a 3 day comment period and the governor decided that was a bad idea as the gun dealers were packed with purchases of the guns effected. All I can say is if they try to come and take my guns.... they can have them bullets first.

Just another shining example of the Liberal Socialists eroding the Constitution. I feel sorry for people that live in NY with having to deal with these new laws that will do nothing but let politicians say "See, I did something".
My advice is for people that are 2nd Amendment people to FLOOD the politicians with letters telling them of how you feel about this and that they will not get your vote if this crap continues.
I live here in Missouri and have already sent letters to both federal Senators, my federal Representative, my state Senator, my state Representative, and the Governor and Lieutenant Governor.
We must let the politicians know that if they do crap like this, they'll be looking for a job.

This could turn out like a religeous or a political discussion. Some people think that you don't need a machine gun to hunt rabbits, or a grenade launcher to chase dear, while others think the right to bear arms makes it legal for them or own a sherman tank or their own nuclear warhead. Wear do you sensibly draw the line? Where does common sense come into this?
A sane person could own a machine gun for 40 years and never get in trouble. A thief could break in to your house, steal your machine gun and kill a hundred people before your family members found you dead and stiff from the thief that wanted your gun.

the whole mess with the renewed push for gun legislation is insane. its all for the good of the people, and that they did something, never mind itll just make things worse. my advice phantom, is move.

Its tough to just sell the house, find a new job, move away from friends and family. I just wish that there was more reviewing and input into the whole law in itself. Does something need to change? probably.. Do all law abiding gun owners need to suffer the consequences of some very few mentally ill?

I second what @stchman said. Flood your politicians with mail. These people seem to have lost touch with the people that put them in office.

Well the one thing I am going to do, and should have long ago, is join the NRA. Although some of thier comments have a little bit to be desired about the gun control issue lately, they are the strongest voice in congress but they seem to not have effected NY laws it seems.

I was just reading about the new law. Background checks to buy bullets? I have to say that most criminals are not going to buy them, they have them or will steal them. Another line read "In another provision, therapists, doctors and other mental health professionals will be required to tell state authorities if a patient threatens to use a gun illegally. The patient's weapon could then be taken away"... My wife is a mental health professional, it is her duty to report any credible threat that could result in ANYONE being injured. I will ask her but, I believe that it was part of the oath that she took and may already be a federal law. It seems kind of dumb to add that line into the law when doctors already take an oath to protect people also.

These new laws will be as successfull as the anti drug, dwi/dui, etc. They are so blind... cant they see that criminals dont follow laws. Also, an AR is only a modular semi automatic rifle... that looks mean. There are other semi automatic rifles, handguns and shotguns which they will go after next. I have an AR that I have highly customized for coyote hunting... they are not going to take mine...:>)2009 Chevy Silverado 2500HDLT 6.0L w/ Towing Package, Dick Cepek GM8 Rims, Dick Cepek FC II 33X11.50R17,RKSport Ram-Air Hood(Functional), Lazer Lite Aluminum Tonneau Cover, Road Armor Stealth Bumper, PIAA Lighting, Diablo Trinity Tuner, Diablew Custom Tune, BullyDog Cold Air Intake, American Racing Headers w/highflow cats, Corsa Performance Sport Exhaust, Custom Striping, Black Bowties front and rear, Fuel Grille Inserts, Recon Headlights, Readylift Shocks, Readylift Upper Contol Arms, 2" Blocks in the Rear..

the best part is, and id have to look it up to ge the exact number, ar-15s were used in something like .06% of homicides in 2011. guess how many homicides were commited with pistols, mostly revolvers? way more. both however, were beaten out by clubs and hammers.
corse, politicians and logic never go together. (for the most part)
