First off I am sorry for what happened.. I know how hard you and your family have worked on it...

I would like to know what started it.. A relay unless it is Over heated should never do that.. And if everything is Fused with the right Amp fuse that should stop a short when it pops.. Not saying that you did something wrong but it's hard to say now..

    Have you contacted PIAA?

Dang Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the fire was contained enough that is mostly cosmetic and then obviously the wiring. Keep us posted on how it goes.

This fire has definately made us think twice about aftermarket lighting, as of right now we still have all the lights on the truck but nothing is hooked up. A week before this happened, our Piaa fog lights quit working so we trouble shot the wiring, relay, and fuses. Turned out the relay went bad, no big deal because these lights are about 5 years old anyways. We ordered one through Piaa for $40.00 shipped, installed the relay and right away it started clicking loudly. We disconnected the battery, and came back the next day to hook the battery up to find out the clicking was gone. Against better judgement we left the relay in, the fire started at the fog lights. It was definately our fault for leaving a faulty relay in, but we will build it back twice as good as before.

I agree with you 100% Glenn, but sometimes people just won't listen and they have to learn from they're mistakes. I posted those pics to show everyone what COULD happen, with sloppy wiring practices and I hope this is a lesson learned that won't happen again lol!!

I took the ECM out of the truck, and decided it needed a little something. I used a dremel and a polishing bit, and went to work for 2 hours with the jeweler's rouge. I then took candy apple red paint, and painted the DELCO letters to match the truck.

When we assembled the engine we used all Fel-Pro gaskets, including the exhaust manifold gaskets. Well we didn't even get 500 miles out of them, before we suffered massive exhaust leaks on both banks of the motor. We bought some copper MLS header gaskets from Summit Racing, $40.00 a pair and we bought two pairs. It was suggested that doubling the gaskets will help with the excessively thick header flange, and take up and abnormalities on the mating surface of the head. They worked like a charm!!!

Ralph cut down the shifter, and drilled and tapped it to accept the Pabst beer keg handle.

Pics of the engine bay getting back to normal, we bought an aftermarket fuse box from Ron Francis wiring. 6 gang 40 amp per slot maximum. $49.99, marine grade box.

Painted the brake booster with black tractor paint, Ralph made some new lexan covers for the fuse box area. Pressure washed the whole engine bay with mean green, and purple power. Also bought some new battery post covers.

Glenn I love the LED shifter idea, that might happen in the future lol!! Thanks for adding yet another mod to the list.

12,000 hits does not surprise me at all Steve, very few people have done this swap themselves, let alone document it.

Ralph had bought a spare dash from a fellow Colorado member, and he decided to smooth and paint it to match the truck. We also decided to replace the heater core, since we had the dash out. It took the both of us 3 hours to get the dash completely out, not a fun job at all lol!!
