Default 2003 Tahoe z71 SUNROOF STUCK OPEN

I have a 2003 z71 Tahoe with a sunroof that is stuck in the fully open position. On the way to work one morning (temp outside in the 20s, frosty glaze on vehicle) I went to hit the map light and accidentally hit the open sunroof button. I think there was ice glazed over the sunroof and/or mechanical parts because when i hit the button nothing happened at first but i heard it try to open. I hit close then tried to open it to the vent position, still wouldnt open up, i pushed up lightly on the glass thinking there might have been a thin ice coating keeping it from opening but still nothing. eventually it opened up, sounded fine no unusual sounds, but when i went to close it, it wouldnt close. it's getting power because it will move a few millimeters but then will move itself back to the fully open position. I checked and it doesn't look like anything is in the track preventing it from closing. The switch is still giving power to the sunroof so it's not a fuse or anything. The dealer told me I will probably have to replace the whole assembly. Has anyone heard of this problem or have any suggestions on how to fix it? How difficult is it to take the headliner down to be able to get in there to see anything? Any suggestions please call me on my cell at 704.608.9701 or email me at johnwcu25@yahoo.com

    Thank you!
    John

Having the exact same problem today with my 2005 Suburban sunroof. It's fully open, but when I try to close, it start back less than 1/2 inch and then retracts back open....sound exactly the same, but I don't have an answer yet....

Was it opened when it was frozen outside?

    1) More than likely the motor has become weak/damaged, from the frozen position and attempting to open it and it getting stuck in the back(open) position. Start the truck, have someone hold the switch
and they your going to try to move the roof forward to the close position. You did do anything to the tracks, these motors hate cold weather and when they are frozen they stick real easy.
    2) Removing the headliner is not difficult, but time consuming, replacing the unit is not easy, but they get you because I believe you CAN NOT just replace the motor, I may be wrong on the newer models, in which case it will be a bonus, but still expensive.
    3) The pilar panels, visors, rear molding around the windows, pull straps and so on... will need to be removed in order to get to the whole unit, or motor out.
    4) If you do not have a garage, tools, spare car/truck in case of problems, this is not for you.
    5) Sometimes when the unti is pushed back into the close position, you can reset the fuse and it will operate again, sometimes not......

Some of these devices are better left for the professional I'm afraid........
