    Default Am I stingy?

    Or is $3000 ridiculous for ring and pinion swap? Asked my shop for a quote and they outsource axle work, one shop told them 2600 and another 3100 for parts and labor.

    I smirked and said thanks anyways...

    Holy cow!

    I had my 4x4 regeared for a bit over $1500 -- including all parts and labor. All work was done in one day (I dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternon) ... and everything is warranted for 5 years as long as break-in procedures were followed and a diff fluid change was done at 400mi (which I had the same shop do for me, just to remove any doubt).

    $3000. Wow, just wow...

    Yeah... "wow" is all I could say too. Not sure what it is out here, but mechanics seem to be very expensive in Colorado. The shop I use is pretty reasonable, and they have a race team so thats cool.

    I am a little disappointed though that they dont do axle work and the best deal they could find is $2600.

    There must be some major markup on their part. I regeared an 1995 silverado. It cost me around $1500. That was new gears front and rear and a new Detroit locker for the rear, all bearings, seals and labor included. I also dropped mine off in the morning and picked it up that afternoon. Check a phone book or google search rearend or ring and pinion shops near your home. You will save some money going directly to them. They guy I use charges around $300 to tear down a rearend and rebuild it and around $400 for a front diff. For $3000 you can drive to Michigan, use my guy, and hit the Casino with the cash you have left over! Weekend road trip??

    Try buying a lift ticket in Aspen. Yeah, some things in Colorado are expensive.

    Dang. I think mine was around 1200 front and rear.
