no you dont have to take it off i used small pieces of masking tape to go all the way around the bow tie to get perfect edges then taped off a good sized area around it with news paper to catch the over spray. If you want i can put together a little tutorial with some pics to help you out ?

I painted my own and it looked great. It lasted for about a year. It didn't peel or anything, I just got lazy when I painted the chrome bar on my grille and didn't remove the bowtie. It's really easy to remove your grille and the bowtie. It's cheap and lasts. By the way, your truck looks pretty sick. I hope mine can look as good as yours when I'm done with it.

    Default bowtie emblems

lots and lots of vinyl stickers to cover - from you favorite sports teams to other symbols - tons to choose from - when I emailed them about stickers for the rear bowtie on nbs chevy trucks, they added the specs to their inventory - I am a die hard Longhorn fan, and I am going to order a blackout with chrome longhorn for the front, and an orange with white longhorn for the back.

their selection is massive (they even have cover-ups for other auto-emblems)

I used Krylon Fusion paint. It worked amazingly well. No sanding is needed and you can put as many coats on as you like. I also put Krylon Clear Glaze over it and gives it a nice protective coat and a nice shine. I would recommend using this more than a sticker. I had a sticker over my chevy emblem and after a while it started to peel and was rather tricky trying to get a sticker to fit a rounded surface. Check out the pictures on my profile. Any questions just let me know!

I have to agree, i did the same thing, about 3 coats of krylon fusion paint, and no chips as of yet, it looks imaculate, and it's been about 3 months. plus it costs about 5 bucks for a drop cloth, some painters tape, and the krylon fusion paint. cheap and durable, that's the way to go. go to the thread i pasted below, it has pics of mine up close.

I just painted mine. I took it off, sanded it to get rid of the smooth plastic finish, primed it, and painted it with a few coats. Then I waxed it.

We'll see how well it holds up.

My truck is a charcoal color, not black, so I found paint that more closely matched.

Now I just need to do something about the grey plastic grille....any suggestions?
