My '90 suburban rear barn doors won't open. I try to unlock them and the lock grinds, but it goes to the unlock position. The button just pushes in, but doesn't make contact. How can I get the damn thing open.

From the inside pull the carpeted panel off the back of the barn doors. Passenger side first then drivers side.
I believe only the passenger side has a lock on it.
The problem will be fairly evident once you get the pad off.
If it has electric locks just see if the solenoid is sticking. Pull up and down on the lock rod.
If this doesn’t unlock the door, then follow the rod to the other end and make sure it hasn’t come loose.
