My latest 1960 Land Rover project (Lots of Pics)
Its been a little while since I have been in here. I have been swamped at work lately.
Mods, if this is more appropriate in the coffee shop sub forum feel free to move it. I has been GM'd though as it has a GM alternator, carb, and regulator (see its practically a GM)
It does a whole lot more sitting than anything but I would like to get it out more often. Here are some exterior views from a few years ago.
So the latest project was to replace the clutch that went out a couple years ago. But as with everything plenty of things popped up as I was making my way to the clutch, this also lead to other projects along the way. I think overall with over 50 years of caked on oil and dirt I did easily 10 hours of clean up for every hour of actual mechanic work. I tried cleaning as much as possible while I was tearing into everything.
First step was to remove the fuel tank (gas doesnt last very well sitting for a couple years.) and clean it out.
Next The interior body panels needed to be removed to access everything.
Drivelines needed to be removed and cleaned. New ujoints were also installed at this point, which was the only thing I was able to source locally from napa autoparts, everything else always has to be ordered. Yay 53 year old british vehicles
Time to start pulling the Tranny. Its British so everything leaks. Output shaft seals were replaced as well as all levers getting cleaned and painted. New mounts also installed. Clutch installed at this point as well. I did give up cleaning the tranny more after a couple days of wire wheeling and scrubbing and scraping. New pan gaskets made for the tranny and transfer case.
The emergency brake is a transmission brake. Since the output shaft seal was leaking I had to clean this and make it all pretty too.

Time to start re-assembly
Drivelines were next. The Pinion seals were also replaced. Unfortunately I ran out of time to pull the full differentials to clean and paint (as well as make new gaskets for the halves).
Time to put all the interior back together. New boot and knob kit was installed (bought along time ago but never put on as I wanted to wait until I started to restore)
The other stuff that got done during this time as well was new pan gasket on oil pan (pic above). I also replaced the aftermarket electric pump with a new mechanical one (backing plate painted black but not in done yet in pic.
The stock oil filter was removed and a new spin on conversion was installed. The oil filler neck was also removed, cleaned and painted with new gaskets. Eventually I will get the wires cleaned up.
Finally, I think, I replaced the brake/clutch reservoir. Went to bleed the system, clutch was fine but brakes kept getting air in it. pulled the master cylinder apart but then got no suction so I just got a new one (havent installed it yet).
Well, the clutch works now, but brakes dont for the time being. Got it running after all fluids changed, but the carb needs some major tuning, as I had to crank the idle screw to get it to idle with the choke off, but now the choke idles super high. Will probably source that part to someone. After running for about 5 minutes all 3 of the rubber sections of the exchaust hangers decided to melt/brake so the entire rear of the exhaust dropped. Always 2 steps forward 1 step back with this thing. Hopefully the new seals and gaskets will hold back some of the fluids now too.

Don't think it will be as quick as the general lee, but I may just have to buff out the aluminum body and go for the blinding effect.

Is that a capstan style front winch?
She still looks good no matter how much corrosion, grime, and faded paint she has.

Nice project. Keep it going. I hope to one day do an older Chevy, but that will have to wait until I am a little older, lol-K&N Air Filter

Set in Africa-guess it was actually filmed in California with stock Africa footage

He used to end or start?the show saying White Hunter with Rhodes Reason!!
Yeah loved that Land Rover because it was in that show-and the nature show-Wild Kingdom?? that was always going to Africa-catching Rhinos etc-usually in a land Rover!!
Maybe tagging them-giving them shots-or getting them for Zoos
