Here are the stats, keep in mind this was towing from Reading to north of State College in PA...camper weighs right about 3,000 pounds, and I had an easy 1,000 pounds of cargo between firewood, family, water, food, and camping stuff. I maintained highway speeds, which was a good thing; temperatures were in the mid to upper 90s.
- Oil temperature spiked at 231*F pulling Seven Mountains (it normally runs around 210*F).
Seven Mountains is about a 3 mile drag, which is about as steep as they get in PA...it'll bring most semi's to a crawl, even unloaded ones. This was the only place the truck dropped into, and held, 3rd gear on the stretches of open highway.
- Trans temperature spiked at 189*F on the same pull...was typically less than 170*F, even with the winch blocking most of the lower opening in the bumper.
- Coolant spiked at 206*F on the same pull...don't believe your gauge, these trucks run about 195*F for most driving.
Its climbing most of the way there, coasting down most of the way back...used nearly 1/2 tank getting there (about 150 miles) and right about 1/4 coming home. Some of the low mpg on the trip up was from heavy traffic around Harrisburg. I actually found that using tow/haul cost me more mileage than it was worth on the open road...unless you are getting over 65mph, it won't shift into 6th. I ran T/H up, and normal back...the truck doesn't seem to care either way.
I'm probably going to talk to my truck guy and see what he's charging for gears...might see about swapping to 4.10s or even 4.56s.
