Default Howdy from down here in Lithia, FL

I have a 1995 Suburban 5.7 that I frickin love. However, I just bought a 1985 Suburban 6.2 because it's a diesel so I can try running waste vegetable oil in it.

I am late to jump on the bandwagon. When I first heard of a couple guys driving their hippie van across the country on used fryer oil it sounded really cool, but, unfortunately, I made too much money as a Naval Officer to do anything with the idea. I was too concerned with getting to work through the traffic mess or how I was going to schedule mowing my lawn or getting a load of mulch to do the flowerbeds or customizing my motorcycle by cutting and polishing my own aluminum pieces because buying custom motorcycle parts were too damn expensive.

So, for years I paid more and more and more for gas until I became a disabled veteran and the wife left and I filed a bankruptcy. Now, I am an old, cripple, retired, disabled veteran who makes a fraction of what he did. So, obviously saving on gas is a concern, but really not even as much as my desire to further the ideas of alternative energies. My passion was once making jets ready to go off the pointy end. I have been without a passion for just over 2 years. So, a few months ago, I had an epiphany.

Alternative fuels will be my new passion.

I was slowed down and had just enough taken away from me to make life a challenge. However, I was allowed to keep the skills and abilities and sense of humor even that I have been blessed with so I am happy to have this new passion. I feel like I can now devote my energies to helping the world outside my own selfish little life bubble.

So, anyway, my experience is as a jack of all trades, master of none. I worked as a construction laborer kid to a furniture builder kid and 15 jobs in between, learning just enough to know some stuff about a lot of stuff. Then, at 21, I was fed up with my loser-ness and joined the Navy for the discipline and direction I so desperately needed. I worked as an electronics technician as an enlisted worker bee, then I just moved to the other side of the desk to become a Naval Officer, doing mostly administrative/managerial duties handling just over 100 people. Best frickin job in the world. Then, after doing that for a few years, I woke up from a coma and life changed direction.

Home life has always been fixing, building, designing, creating, bettering. This is why I am glad to still be able to do these things. Navy life just helped me to perfect my skills and learn even more that I can do anything with an instruction manual and some elbow grease.

So, I am, by no means, a professional mechanic. I just love to fix and have the stubbornness required to overcome most challenges. Furthermore, I hate the idea of paying many dollars for something that I could do with elbow grease.

    ...just my two cents.

1985 6.2l Suburban 211,000 miles. Bought to run on WVO.

1995 5.7l Suburban 238,000 miles. I love this truck but since I'm an old, cripple, disabled veteran, I need to sell it. I can't afford both of them.
I gived it to my mom, actually, back in June, I think it was.

"Welcome aboard"! With the price of diesel fuel, the waste oil conversion will become more popular I'm sure. Good luck!
