Default Rustproofing or undercoating needed on new vehicles?

Back in the day Ziebart and other rust proofing outfits were pretty popular. My question is, are they needed anymore?

I live here in Missouri, and while they do salt the roads in the winter, the weather here is not that bad.

My 2008 Silverado was 4+ years old and showed no visible signs of rust underneath.

    Any thoughts.

Here in NY we definately it... for one thing it provides a protective layer against chips which provides apath for water and salt to get under the paint. Another benefit is the sound deadening it provides.

I bought my truck last spring, so its seen one winter...its got visible rust in places on the frame where the coating is thin.

I'm going to oil undercoat mine later this summer, then yearly from there...that seems to be the only way to ensure things don't rust around here.

My next question is what do you guys pay for undercoating/rustproofing? Is Ziebart still the company to use? What are the yearly touch-ups?

I do mine myself... I use Eastwood products. It takes me two quarts to do the complete underside... costs me ~$60 in materials. There are two types... rubberized and a kind of waxed based product. I apply the rubberized more where the stones are more likely to hit (frame, wheel wells, etc.). I also spray oil into the doors, rocker panels, etc. I had a dealer do my truck when I first bought it... but they did a crappy job. If you taking it to someone... take it to someone who does this consistently.

Same here, except I oil undercoat...mix of hydraulic/ATF, new motor oil, and gear oil. The last truck had 275k miles of cross country driving in any weather, and spent most of its time in PA; and there was zero rust and I could get any bolt apart.

There are locals that spray trucks...I might get lazy, have them spray it the first time.

How do you apply this ATF and gear oil mix? Do you crawl under and brush it on, spray it on? What about dripping, does it drip for days after treatment?

They make undercoat guns...both harbor freight and JC Whitney sold them at one point.

Here in NJ there are very few shops that still do it Too much of a mess.. Also how old is your truck? If it's got any rust or dirt under it better clean it offf GOOD before you undercoat it..
