Default National Naval Aviation Museum ~ NAS Pensacola Florida ~ Best Museum In USA

Today we took a trip to the National Naval Aviation Museum, which is inside of the NAS Pensacola in Pensacola Florida. This is the best museum that I've ever been to, and it's FREE. I can't say enough wonderful awesome things about this place. Doesn't matter who you are, your background, whatever. You will be blown away by the depth and the breath of the exhibits that are on display here. I almost can't go on and on about this too much, except that you should come here and plan to spend a day.

My grandfather flew a F6F Hellcat during WWII in the pacific. I've seen photos of this before, but seeing one up close in person was a shock to me. It's MUCH larger in person than when you see them flying around in photos or in old movies.

If your an Aviation fanatic this is probably one of the best museums to visit.
I went to NAS pensacola for a school and visited the museum 5 times while I was there.
In the early 90's I had the good fortune to fly 2 different airframes in as permanent displays.

The museum Charlie mentioned in Mobile is neat too, not very large but they have the Alabama at pierside along with a WWII sub.
One trip aboard a WWII sub makes ya wonder how sailors lived in there for months at a time, not even enough space to turn around in.

I'll post some more pics when I get some more time. I was just amazed at that museum and everything inside.

    Yes
That NAS museum was GREAT when I last saw in in mid 1990's
The Mobile bay-pretty neat too-not as spectacular as NAS but good!
You can see the old firing computer- mechanical electronic-WW2 vintage-they used to calculate how to fire those HUGE guns!!

Yeah-NAS GREAT MUSEUM!! Glad it is still good -maybe it had a SR71- or maybe that was in the air museum outside Tucson ?? Tempe maybe??
I love those flying boats-loiter for hours land on water-kill subs
No rain last two days?? We have been fairly dry since Monday I think-NOLA

I was there a few years ago when I got to fly down with an Air Force KC-10 extender crew to help out at the airshow. Looks like they added a few more planes since I was there. But I will agree with what you said, GREAT museum.

Would love to head out and visit that museum someday! My wife was actually stationed at Pensacola, FL for tech school. I've also heard rumor that they're trying to secure funds to transport the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) from Bremerton, WA to Pensacola to be turned into a museum as well. Would love the chance to see my old ship again as a museum! Be a great excuse for a family road trip for us!
On a side note, the Aviation museum in Seattle is absolutely awesome as well. Great WWI and WWII aircraft exhibit, not to mention an SR-71, Concord, and Kennedy's Air Force One.

Yeah-trying to remember exactly where i saw the SR71
    either NAS Pensacola
    or the one outside Tucson-Tempe
The one in Tempe had a B58-the plane that really looked scary when I was a kid-
looked like an ATOMIC BOMBER-scary SOB
After 9/11 various military bases got kinda restrictive about letting folks in to see museums
Can't remember-is that NNAS museum actually on a base?
Seem to remember it was-but almost 20 years??
The Atomic Museum-Alburqurque (sic) was on an airbase-it got restrictive after 9/11-maybe even closed it for a while

    As a kid 50's 60's planes-especially war planes-were a constant fascination for most kids
rockets space and NUKES were also fascinating-but planes were number 1
not sure what kids are fascinated by now-IT stuff maybe??

I'm going to have to hit this one. I've been to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH many times but never made to here. This one is definitely on my list.
