Thread: fuel guage

  1. #1

    Default fuel guage

Filled the tank one day and the next day a amber light on dash a fuel gauge shows empty.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Just going to ask the obvious.... Are you sure you actually still have fuel in the tank? Are you sure someone didn't crawl under the truck and empty your tank for you? I've had my fuel tank messed with before.

if you have a early 2000 model this is a widespread GM part failure. the pickup material used in the fuel tank reacts with the alcohol in the fuel to create a film that interferes with the signal to the PCM/dash indicator.

use a bottle of techron fuel injector cleaner with a few ounces of marvel mystery oil to a full tank. this will aid in reducing the time it will show the wrong level.

the newer fuel pump assy have been made to overcome this .

    Thanks all

The truck was in a locked garage.

    I forgot to mention it's a diesel.

If it is the sensor, Does the tank need to be empty and removed to change sensor?

It depends on your approach to replacing the sending unit. I replaced mine last December and my dad and I just lifted off the bed and pulled the sending unit from the top of the tank where goes in. I had about half a tank of fuel in it. If you leve the bed on and drop the tank from under the truck, it will make it lighter/easier if the tank is empty.
