Just wanted to say hello from Louisiana and ask a couple of questions:
I am going to replace my '97 Sierra (bought new) in a couple of months with (probably) a brand-new Silverado or Avalanche. I've read many things about programmers, performance chips and the like, and am wondering if these things are worth the money spent on them. I want to be able to squeeze every extra mpg I can out of my new ride. Also, do these things void a new vehicle warranty?

Welcome to the site!! I've heard good things about programmers (mainly Hypertech), but many of the guys here swear by custom tunes. They will know more about it than I do! Good luck!

Welcome. I've got an 07 Sierra NBS with the 4.8. Completely stock in New Orleans traffic I was getting about 13.5 mpg. After new wheels and tires I droped down to about 11.8. I bought the hypertech max energy programmer and now I'm getting 14.5-14.8mpg. Thats about 22-25% increase. Now this isn't from my truck but actually gas station receipts and records. I also get 20mpg highway doing about 80 the whole time. I'm extremely happy with it. So far I've had it for about 8000 miles and it has saved me about 500 in fuel. So I payed 380 for it and I've already made $120 and every mile I drive I save more.

Welcome to the site! Exhaust, intake, Programmer are your best bets for increased performance as well as fuel economy for sure and all of these mods can be done without voiding your warranty but it's best to check with your GM sevice manager and ask questions.

every dealer varies on what they will cover. one chevy service department said anything and it is void. others have told me that if you do anything to the frame or sus. then it is void, everything else is fine. i made friends with the service manager and they just "overlook" things. talk to the service manager of the department you plan on going to and maybe out there, they can "overlook" that kind of stuff too. I put new wheels on my suv and went in saying "i have no idea what is wrong it just seems to pull to the right when i drive" and i got the alignment done through the warranty.
Sorry, i am not that into preformance. the other guys here will know more about that. But, do make friends with the service department manager.

to the forum!!! I think you should give Allen at Nelson Performance a call. He can custom tune a pcm to matck your goals, fuel economy and performance. His Tunes are $375 and you get free retunes. You can keep your original pcm for an extra chatge and just swap them out when you need service from the dealer. I also agree that you should also look into a CAI, either AFE or Volant because they are true CAI's. You cant do a whole lot with your exhaust other than a High Low Cat and a cat back dual exhaust. One other thing about the CAI, it must use NO OIL or it will void your warranty.
