Default Best Buy and Geek Squad do good ... again

I've read horror stories here and there about Best Buy and Geek Squad being terrible ... everything from denied claims that should have been approved to extended periods of time for repairs.

My Nikon D5000 camera broke on Monday. I brought it to the geek squad that night and they pulled up my original receipt from their files and showed that I had purchased the accident coverage. They sent the camera in to see if they could repair it.

Through out the week they kept in touch via email and this afternoon I got an email saying to call them. I did, and "Larry" the agent said that the camera was junk piled ... Go to the store and they would get me a replacement.

Nikon doesn't make the D5000 anymore. They don't even make the D5100 anymore, at least they don't sell it at this Best Buy. Just the D5200 ... and it's $100 more than I paid for the D5000 over 3 years ago.

Larry at geek squad called and made me an appointment at my local site. I drove there and they told me I'd have to pay just the difference between the cameras, probably $100 to $150. They were taking forever trying to get the correct SKU to enter to swap out the cameras ... they only one close showed I would have to pay $300 ... so to get me on my way the manager just zeroed it out. My grand total? $0.00.

This is the third wonderful experience at Best Buy and Geek Squad. I did have one negative, but that was ages ago for a lot less money too.

Now, I will note that the accident coverage cost $129 (something like that) so it's not like I got a free camera. I paid for the protection, it's just that imagine you bought a 2009 Silverado new from the dealer. You wrecked it in 2013 and your insurance pays for you to get a new 2014 Silverado.

Yeah. They're in a pickle because you can research most products online today and order them from any number of places ... but it's nice to have a local store to go to.
