    Default Turbo 5.3l, or not to turbo 5.3?

    Hey guys, I'm thinking about turbo charging my 2010 silverado w/5.3l, but I wasn't sure what brand of bolt on kits are worth the time/hassle/money. I like the concept of the rear-mounted sts system simply because it's cold air induction. Or, cooler air I should say. Does anyone have any insight?

    thanks!

    First questions. How much hp do you want to end up with? Also, what's your budget? Those two questions are going to dictate what type of turbo system you go with.

    Then there are other issues like fuel injectors, tuning the engine for the turbo, etc.

    How many miles are in the bottom end of the engine? That would be my primary concern. You don't want to throw a turbo on a 200k mile engine and expect it to last if your driving it daily. Your likely to scatter the rotating assembly across the roads in that instance. When in doubt, install new forged rotating assembly. I believe it was hot rod magazine that did a turbo junkyard ls build. 4.8 if I remember correct. I also believe it was a low pressure (7psi) build. I've slept since then though

    @Steve- I'm looking to get in the low to mid 400's for hp with a budget of 2-3k.
    @BurbanMan- I have a 2010 silverado LTZ with 5.3l engine. It has 31k miles on the motor/chassis.

    Sean being youre in Anchorage you might want to do more research on the STS Turbo.
    Ive used one before and found out the hard way they wont tolerate wet climates, 1st gen didnt even like heavy rain storms.
    They have made improvements on the system by putting in splash shields but being the air induction is at the back and under the vehicle it still has issues. Back where its located it draws all the dirt and moisture kicked up under the truck.
    I only had stalling issues and one collapsed filter with mine but I know guys that have used them on off-road trucks and suffered catastrophic failures.
    Unless you keep your truck out of snow and off dirt roads it might not be the correct turbo for you.
