The following is an excerpt from a Wikipedia article on Suburbans.
The GMT800-based Suburbans were introduced in late 1999 as the 2000 model year. Chevrolet sold two models of Suburbans: 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. They came in either LS or LT trim packages. All models came in either 2wd or optional push button 4wd(w/ low range transfer case). A tow hitch with a trailer brake controller was standard.
I'm considering buying an '02 to use for towing and I was wondering if they really do have a brake controller built in or whether the Wiki article should have just said that they were wired to accept a harness with electric brakes. I found an owner's manual but it did not say anything about a brake controller.
I think it's just that it's wired to be able to easily install one. It seems like the new Subs that come with factory trailer hitches have the 6 or 7-way RV plugs. (they look almost alike with the exception for the center reverse pin and I never took notice) Those that have that I think are set up so you wire up your brake controller to this proprietary GM pigtail and it just plugs into a certain spot on a junction block or something under the dash. Mind you, this is all recalling what I've read in other threads here and may or may not be accurate. Good luck!

When I got my 2000 Silverado there was a wiring harness in the dash for hooking up a brake controller. The instructions as to where to plug it into the harness was also there. From there hooking it up to any controller was simple.
