the lights work if I press on the dash beneath the switch... I'm guessing the symptoms aren't normal?

It could be just the switch if that is the case with the lights. What year Tahoe is it?

    99. Going back and forth to 4wd works just fine as long as it's in neutral. Is it supposed to work in drive as well?

It should work in any gear position. But this is where my knowledge ends. Mine was intermittent and had service 4WD on the DIC. Took switch out and touched a soldering iron to the contacts on the circuit board where the plugs plug into and fixed it. I guess you could start with that and go from there. Good luck.

Yep, same kind of deal here. When I pressed them directly from the rubber connector, it worked fine-which pretty much points to each component above that (buttons, plastic connector) Quick update, I actually ordered the Dorman replacement 4wd switch/panel, replaced the old one with it, and low and behold, 4wd switches seamlessly. Oh, and my "Service 4wd" light has not come on since. I'm a happy camper.

Glad to hear it was a fairly simple fix.

ok sorry to hijack the thread, but i think my problem is a little more than this one. i read this post and took the advice of many and put a new switch in it, and it didnt fix the problem. The service 4wd light is still on, and the lights arent lit up. When i turn the key it the lights flash then go off.
