E85 - Can I run it in my 454 v8?

Its probably been talked about in a previous forum, But I'm new so please bear with me. I have a 1978 GMC with a 454 4bbl can I run E85 in my truck with blown'n it up?

Any help would be great. Thank ya all.

Nope, the engine and fuel control system have to be designed to run off of it. I don't believe any cars built before 2001 have the capability to run on it.

yea i dont think it will work unless its a flexfuel vehicle

No, you cant run it unless your engines been modified.
On a side note vehicles running E85 dont get very good mpg.

Only with Flexfuel vehicles, and to be honest it sucks. Besides, it should be mixed in with regular gasoline anyhow.

From what I understand, E85 can be run, but it will corrode your fuel system very quickly, thus you need a conversion, if available. The concept is good ... non-oil fuel, but you will get much lower MPG of fuel (30% lower), although I have heard that a good tune after conversion can see an increase.

Lets see a 454... Your getting about 10-14 Tops MPG now.. And you want to put in E-85..? Then you would be getting about 8-11MPG's at best.. Unless it's about .50 per Gal cheaper then I would not bother with it....

Yes Splatjak, you can do it since you have a 4 bbl but you'll only be able to run about 50% eht. with that carb. You'll have to increase the main jets size & richen the accelerator pump circuit. If you want to run 80-85% you can buy a full on alcohol carb that is built specifically for alcohol. They are built with bigger internal passages that you won't have access to enlarge in your stock carb. The down side is that unless you can buy your ethanol 40% to 50% cheaper than what you're paying for gas, or make your own, then you won't see any monetary gain because as Enkie said above, your mpg will go down.
