    Default question on tire size!

Hey everybody! new guy here this is my first post, I have a couple of questions so i hope some of you could help me out. I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 extended cab 4wd, and I'm looking to upgrade my tires and rims. First question, i plan on going with 265/70/r17 because the rims i am looking at are 17' rims, are the 265's the biggest size i can fit without a lift or would a 285 fit? I'm going with Nitto Terra Grapplers and KMC XD series spy rims. so the main question is can i fit 285's without any problems?

I've got a 2001 Silverado 1500 extended cab, essentially the same truck as yours. I once had 265/65/16s on my truck and they rubbed. I upgraded to 265/70/17s with no lift but a slightly offset wheel and they do not rub. Unless you get a lift or some heavily offset wheels, I suspect 285s would rub on your truck.

Unless it's a z71, a 285/70/17 will NOT fit. 265/70/17 is as tall as you can go

Burb is correct. However, you can see how things work for yourself by checking the clearance on your current tires, then going to and check out the specs on the other sizes. Turn your wheel all the way left and measure the least amount of clearance you have on your left tire. Turn wheel all the way to the right and do same on right side (should be same). Go to tirerack and look up your current size tire and write down the height and both width measurements they give you. Then, look up the other sizes, and compare those for height and width, knowing how much room you have to spare. that is the sure way to know what will fit if you use your current offset. Jim

The difference between the 17/8's and 17/9's, is the 17/9's are 1in" Wider, and they should fit, but it also depends on what the Offset and Backspace on the 17/9 Rims??......Also something to keep in mind, and that is depending on what Size Tires you have on your Truck Now?? may need to have the Trucks Computer Re-Programmed for this change in Tire Size"265/70/17's".....

I have the same truck you have 00 Z71, stock tires are 265/75/16(31.6),,,PO put 265/70/16(30.6),, I tried his stock wheels from his 2011 Z71, I don't remember size but they were 18", I mounted one on front with out any scrubbing. I have found a set of 275/65/18(32.1)(2007) basically the same diameter that I may buy & im thinking i shouldn't need to program for my tranny..

I wouldn't go any larger than 265's... 275's are definitely going to rub. We've also run zero off set on my sons 97 2500 without any problems.
