    Default tranny noise????

I have an 06 2500 HD, 4x4, and it has a whining noise when running. I checked the fluids and all are ok. I thought it was the power steering pump, but now I'm not so sure! Anybody ever change the pump in the tranny? Can that be done without a total tranny job?

I've changed a front pump before in a 4l60e, but you have a 4l80e so I'm not sure it's the same thing. The front pump is easily removed, by standing the transmission on it's nose and the front pump is right on top. It's held in with about 12 bolts, my replacement pump cost about $49 new from GM.

So I gotta drop the trannie! Well aint that special! Chevyboy, aint no fuel pump whine like this! I thought it might be the power steering pump, but like I said, all fluids are fine an full! Its all the time,(when the trucks running) no matter the weather or the temp!

Even if fluids are fine and full,it still could be pump!

I would invest in a cheap mechanics stethoscope and start listening around the motor. As mentioned above, just because the fluid level is good does not mean the pump is. You can also just use a long screw driver with and hold the end to your ear. But, a stethoscope is easier to get into tight spots. I had 2 new ps pumps with new fluid whine until I put an additive in the fluid. it could be any of the pulleys making the noise.

get a small plastic flex hose like 1/8 inch . stick in your ear then tape a stick to the other end and with the engine running probe for the location of the sound.

the whine I had was the PS fluid needed replacing. I used prestone [gm] power steering fluid with the seal conditioner. after sucking the fluid out 2X the pump makes no sounds..

Well, I took it to the mech. up the road and he used his stethoscope and tracked it down to the steering pump!! That's a big relief!
